This afternoon, we bring to market a book, entitled: Concerning Dissent and Civil Disobedience, We Have an Alternative to Violence by Abe Fortas. This, the first edition, published in 1968. At the time that this book was written, Abe Fortas was an associate Justice of the Supreme Court. In 1968 when this book was published it was unprecedented. It came at a time when the nation was shocked by the findings of the 'Riot Commission Report', the death of Martin Luther King, and the flare-up of violence across the country. Fortas believes that America has a constructive alternative to violence. He explains what this option is as he carefully defines both the limit and the scope of permissable dissent and civil disobedience. He describes the crucial, creative role that these non-violent principles would play in the revolutionary America of 1968. A very unusual offering this is a paperback book as well as the First edition. Its condition is Very Good and it is tight and the textblock is absolutely clean. There is a little shelf-wear to the wraps and a small scratch on the rear cover in the extreme upper right corner. None of these is significant. This little book is a true piece of history. Being just old enough to remember those times I found the 64 page book bringing back memories of the riots on TV and on our college campuses Learn more about this item

This week TIME led with stories of the Baltimore riots that shook America. The cover reads “America 1968 2015: What has changed. What hasn’t.” The black-and-white photographs shows a young black man wearing a scarf as a mask, fleeing from the police. It appears that nothing has changed in the past 47 years in America since that tragic day when Martin Luther King was assassinated and the streets of Baltimore erupted.
Justice Clarence Thomas on Tuesday renewed his yearslong attack on a landmark First Amendment decision, with the conservative jurist again calling for the Supreme Court to revisit the “flawed” ruling in the 1964 case.

Without this dialogue, the backbone of what we have fought so desperately for could easily crumble. Over the past several decades, we have seen the number of democratic societies around the globe increase, and during the past ten years, there has been a heightened awareness of the increasing conflicts and problems that both directly and indirectly affect our everyday lives. With the Middle EastÆs never ending conflict, the war on terrorism, and the numerous financial and environmental crises, peopleÆs sense of safety, power, and representation has diminished in part because they feel they have no voice. Designers, however, have used their skills to communicate their dissent throughout history and are doing so even more now with the birth of the Web and the increasing ease of distributing posters and other printed materials. A picture is worth a thousand words and designers have used this adage to their advantage by creating simple yet powerful designs that immediately convey poignant messages to their viewers. The Design of Dissent will examine graphic work focusing on social and political concerns from around the globe. The time is certainly ripe as the U.S. -- and world -- flare in opposition on so many important issues.

Across the globe, a new historical conjuncture is emerging in which the attacks on higher education as a democratic institution and on dissident public voices in general - whether journalists, whistleblowers or academics - are intensifying with sobering consequences. The attempts to punish prominent academics such as Ward Churchill, Steven Salaita and others are matched by an equally vicious assault on whistleblowers such as Chelsea Manning, Jeremy Hammond and Edward Snowden, and journalists such as James Risen.
