The Greek poet Sapho and the girl from Mytilene. The classicism of style and the romanticism of the themes. CLASSICISM AND ROMANTISM The essential common point of all classical, neo-classical painters, also known as "academics", is a flawless technique, a precise design, perfectly finished. It is Painters for whom there can be no confusion between a sketch and a finished work. "They do not throw the paint on the canvas". They draw perfectly and the touch of their brush is invisible or not very visible. These painters reject "tachist" techniques or "flat painting" without perspective or depth. They do not use arbitrary colors that do not correspond to those perceived in nature. For them the horses are not red and the trees are not blue. Finally the subjects of their paintings are "noble", they borrow their themes from Religion, History, Mythology, Literature, or a significant landscape. They are in the tradition of all European painting, except the Netherlands from the Reformation, since the 16th century. The words of Nicolas Poussin inspires all their works "The painting is the imitation of everything that is seen under the sun, its end is the delectation" In other words the art is made to please, not made to disturb. Classical painters favor the reasonable and reasoned moderation and subtlety in expressing feelings: reason must temper passions. The painting can be classic in style but romantic in substance, when it treats the same subjects as the classical painters, but with sentimental emphasis, a dramatic accent an, exaggeration of situations and behaviors, that the classical painter tends to avoid.
