A young artist is using photography and found plastic bags to make a beautiful and poignant ethical point
I fell in love with printmaking back in college and my favorite printing process is monotyping- drawing or painting on a smooth non absorbent surface and then transferring it to paper. A monotype produces a completely unique print with a process that is unpredictable, expressive, painterly and totally unlike any other creative process. There are all kinds of tools and supplies for monotypes (acrylic printing plates, the Gelli plate, etc) but really any slick surface will work- even something as simple as a plastic bag! Since I tend to work more messy and abstract I like to start by adding layers of prints on top of each other to create a background full of color and texture. I and the children LOVE these AMAZING trash liner jellyfish. So simple, and yet such an amazing addition to our OCEAN/SEA theme. I have added a Youtube tutorial at the bottom. To make these I used two 10 gallon commercial trashcan liners, the ones for small office trash cans, at a cost of about 5 cents and about 10 minutes of time each. #1 The first liner is opened up, four "corners" [just grab the edge about every 1/4 around] brought together and stapled, then stuffed down into the center of the bag to create a bowl shape. #2 For the second liner, cut off the sealed edge. It is accordion folded in fourths. Unfold completely and fold over once to create a square, giving you four layers of plastic. Cut off the edges and cut into spiral. I did about a 1 - 1 1/4 inch thickness. The wider the strip the shorter the "tentacles." I didn't try to be that accurate or to make a perfect circle. I knew once they were opened out that it wouldn't matter. You end up with a pretty long strip. I folded it in half and cut it to create two strips of equal length. Since it's actually doubled over double layers, this gives you 8 tentacles total. Spread them all apart. \ If you try to attach them without separating them first, they will cling to one another and not fall properly to create the tentacle effect. Once separated, join them all together, placing them randomly together in a circle and stapling together. Since you have two sets of four of the same cut, this is important that they not sit perfectly together or it won't look right. Stick the tentacle staple up against the inside of the bowl shaped bag and push up with your hand. Collect all layers on the top, along with a string to hang if wanted, and staple. You can't see the staple on the ones I have up. The plastic folds over and hides it. The layers are: TENTACLES TOP OF BAG gathered together and folded over [pic below] BOTTOM CENTER OF BAG STRING FOR HANGING All are stapled through at once. I can now make them with just one stable through the whole thing, but it is easier to staple the tentacles first, then the top of the bag, then the combined pieces. These are WONDERFUL!! I'm so glad I came across the idea. I think my process is MUCH easier than the original instructions, which used clear rubber bands. This is an original idea of Casa Haus English that her daughter created for a school assignment. She placed her jellyfish creation on a stick and used it as a movable puppet. Our jellyfish did the same, which is really cool, but with 2 and 3-year-olds, playing with plastic bags just doesn't work. So, ours are hung from the ceiling. TUTORIAL I have received several emails about the bringing the "corners" together step, so have created the following tutorial. A couple of things to note is that for this one I used smaller liners than the ones in this post, and I folded the first liner in quarters rather than opening it out and folding it in half, so the tentacles came out shorter. Only the last staple is necessary. If you are making a lot of these, you'll probably get to the point where you can just hold it all together and only use the one staple. This project is one which has evolved out of my recent experiments with fused plastic. It’s a way of recycling old crayons and plastic bags creatively and I love the finished ‘leaf-like’ feel of these. The finished leaves can be used for a wide range of purposes, or alternatively you could cut the fused plastic sheets up into any shape you like. Materials Plain white plastic bags – or bags with large areas of white that can be used. Roll of Cling film Old wax crayons Metallic Gold Ink Pen Baking parchment Equipment Old kitchen grater Domestic iron Pinking Shears Heat Proof board (I used a toughened glass chopping board) Preparation Cut up your white plastic bags into pieces that will fit onto your ironing board – my pieces were about A5 sheet size. Grate your wax crayons into separate colours, and place in different pots – I used cake cases for the purpose, which worked well. Place the heat proof board onto your ironing surface, and lay a protective sheet of some sort over it (I used an old tea-towel). Cover this in turn with a piece of baking parchment bigger than your plastic. Place your base sheet of plastic on top of this. Method I like to start by ironing the plastic smooth to begin with, so place another sheet of baking parchment on top, and switch the iron onto a medium heat non-steam setting. The actual setting will vary slightly depending upon the thickness of plastic bag you are using. Thicker bags require higher heat to fuse – just experiment. Iron the sheet smooth for a few seconds. Remove the top layer of parchment paper and you are ready to start decorating. I found that the most effective way to do this was to build up the design in layers of different colours one at a time, separating and sealing each layer with cling film. If you don’t do this, and put all the colours on together in a single layer, you are in danger of creating a muddy mess as all the colours mix together. The designs shown here all used about 3 or 4 different layers. Because each was separated from the other, the colours do not physically mix, and each layer acts like a glaze creating beautiful bright and colourful designs. Less is more – you don’t need to sprinkle very much on – as you are not looking to cover the plastic completely with each individual layer. After you have sprinkled on your first layer, place a sheet of cling film a little larger than the base plastic over the top of the sprinkles, and then a sheet of baking parchment over this – again, this should cover all the plastic layers so it doesn’t melt on your iron. Iron the layers together – you will see the wax crayon sprinkles melt very quickly, but you may need to press a little harder and longer to enable the cling film to fuse to the plastic beneath depending on the heat of the iron and the thickness of the plastic bag used – just experiment and you will soon get a feel for it. Repeat this with different colours, sealing each layer of crayon sprinkles with cling film, and fusing them together using the baking parchment to protect the iron. Small air bubbles will become trapped and the plastic will wrinkle, creating an almost leather like marbled surface. You can see each individual stage below. Once cooled, trim the extra cling film away from the sheet and cut it into whatever shapes you like – using pinking shears makes a particularly decorative edge for leaf shapes. You can draw on the fused plastic with sharpies, or other pens – for example I used a metallic gold ink pen to draw decorative stylised veins on the leaves. If you want to make a bookmark like I’ve done here – punch holes in the end of two of the leaves and attach together with ribbon leaving the ends trailing. Alternatively this would also make a decorative gift tag. If you make lots of leaves, you will have enough to make a garland, or simply hang them individually onto twigs and branches placed in a pot. There are plenty of possibilities! If you want to make a bookmark like I’ve done here – punch holes in the end of two of the leaves and attach together with ribbon leaving the ends trailing. Alternatively this would also make a decorative gift tag.

I like the subtle striping on this one. I created the stripes with "vintage" Kroger bags which were a lighter color. I'm not really happy with the top edge of this one--it's not as smooth and straight as I would like. But it works as my every day bag--big enough and strong enough to carry a couple of heavy books plus odds and ends. Please note that this bag has been used extensively, but has not stretched at all. :)
Het is wel hoogseizoen met workshops maar ik geniet er dan ook enorm van. Gisteren een workshop ´fusing en structuren met plastic´ bij Marjon Hoftijzer gedaan. Ik ben eigenlijk niet zo´n plastic-liefhebber, om zelf mee te werken dan. Ik hou van het gevoel van textiel, zacht en plooibaar. Maar ik wil toch alles een keer meegemaakt hebben, en de eindresultaten die ik ervan gezien heb zijn werkelijk prachtig, dus daar ging ik. In de maanden ervoor had ik al allerlei tasjes en plasticjes verzameld dus eerst gingen we daar maar eens mee los. En oh, wat vind ik die metaalfolies/chipszakken mooi worden: Deze ging in het ´proefjesboek´ maar ´s avonds maakte ik er direct nog eentje om mee te gaan naaien: Aan het eind van de middag hadden we dit boek vol proefjes gemaakt: En ´s avonds moest ik nog even door gaan, ik had echt een plasticvirus te pakken, dus nu ligt dit klaar om zo doorgestikt te gaan worden: Ook deze workshop is een aanrader voor iedereen die van experimenteren houdt. De harde plastics heb ik een beetje links laten liggen, maar dat is een persoonlijke keuze, er was zoveel te doen dat ik die ook niet gemist heb. Misschien schrijft Wil later deze week er nog wel over. Deze zachtere plastics kan ik eenvoudig als ´stof´ verwerken. Blij dat ik die ervaring nu ook heb!
