Sensitive Plant (Mimosa pudica) general information: Mimosa pudica, also named the Sensitive Plant and Sleeping Grass is a fun plant to grow. The Sensitive Plant folds up its leaves when touched or exposed to a flame or heat. Native to Brazil, it grows to a height of 50 cm with a spread of 30 cm. Sensitive Plant (Mimosa Pudica) is common in rather moist waste soil, in lawns and in open plantations. This ornamental plant can also be grown indoors in pots or outdoors as an annual in the cooler zones. The flowers are pale lilac pink, nearly 1 inch in diameter. The flowers are globe shaped and appear in summer. It has numerous filaments. The stem is erect, slender, red-brown and branching. The fruit is flat and uplong. Bristles on seed pod cling to fur and clothing. The leaves are fern like and pale green with opposite bipinnate leaflets. When this plant is touched, the leaves fold and the stems droop. Recovery is prompt, and the action can be repeated endlessly without harm to the sensitive plant. These movements are called seismonastic movements, reaction to physical shock. At night, the leaves will also fold and bend in movements known as nyctonastic movements, reaction to absence of light. Hardiness zones 9 -11, (-5C/25F,4C/40F) in winter. This plant requires medium light exposure, an evenly moist soil, and temperatures between 60-85F. The plant dislikes root disturbance. Mimosa is sensitive to overwatering. Winter temperatures should not fall below 60F; if they do get chilled, then the plant suffers with yellowing of leaves and stems. Due to its ability to fix nitrogen from the air it works well on poor soils. Use a soil mix consisting of 2 parts peat moss to 2 parts sand and one part perlite. The soil should be kept evenly moist but not saturated. During the growing season, the plants are fertilized weekly with a balanced fertilizer diluted to 1/2 the strength recommended on the label. During the winter months, fertilize on a monthly basis and water sparingly. Sensitive Plant (Mimosa pudica) germination detail: Soak Sensitive Plant (Mimosa pudica) seeds in hot water for one day until they swell. Sow swollen Sensitive Plant (Mimosa pudica) seeds immediately in seeding mix, covering with two to three times their thickness. Do not overwater or allow to dry out and provide good drainage and bright light. Sensitive Plant (Mimosa pudica) Seed will germinate in 14 to 21 days at 70F, it can be a little more, don't give up. Mimosa pudica is an amusing plant to cultivate. This sensitive plant removes its leaves when touched, or when they are exposed to flames or heat. Originally from Brazil, it can reach 50 cm in height and 30 cm in diameter. Mimosa pudica is native to moist and fertile soils. This ornamental plant can be grown in pots or outdoors whenever the climate is colder. The flowers are a pale lilac-pink and are approximately 1 inch in diameter. They are in the shape of a globe and composed of several filaments, they appear in the summer. The tiges are straight, thin, red-brown and divide into branches. The fruit is flat and long. The hairs on the seed envelopes can cling to the clothes. The leaves resemble a fougere cell. They are pale green and composed of small opposing leaves. When you touch the plant, the leaves turn and the stem turns brown. The leaf returns to its position quickly and you can repeat the action without harming the plant. These movements appeal to thygmonasties, a reaction to a physical shock. At night, even the leaves refer to nightfall, it is nyctinastique, a reaction to the absence of light. Rustic areas 9 -11, (-5°C/25°F,4°C/40°F) and winter. This plant requires a clearing day, a humid sol and a temperature between 60-85°F. She realizes that she is losing her temper. Mimosa is sensitive to over-arrosage. In winter, the temperature should not fall below 60°F if the plant takes a cold break and the leaves and twigs turn yellow. Due to being able to hold the nitrogen from the air, Mimosa pudica thrives well in poor sun. Use a mixture composed of 2 parties of sphaigne mousse for 2 parties of sand and a partie de perlite. The sun must be kept moist but not saturated. During the growing season, fertilize every week, taking half the dose recommended on the label. In winter, fertilize for months and arborize less frequently.
