We have a more recent review! Head to https://slidesandsunshine.com/paco-sanchez-park-denver/ for the latest, including Phase 2 additions! I have been waiting for the perfect time to visit “Re-Imagine Play” at Paco Sanchez park in Denver, Colorado and yesterday was the day! Just minutes from downtown, extremely close to Mile High Stadium, this is an incredible playground (and best news ever, they’re building it out even more!) Thank you to Denver Parks and Recreation, PCL Construction and Landscape Structures for creating this completely unique place for all to enjoy! Address: 1290 Knox Ct, Denver, CO 80204 This post may contain affiliate links and while we may earn compensation when you click on the links, it is at no additional cost to you. Bathroom/Shade: There were at least two portable bathrooms that we spotted but no bathroom building or drinking fountain. The park is surrounded by huge trees so finding a spot to have our snacks was easy and the girls loved that they could get out of the sun by going in the play structure or under the long bridge. Age Recommendations: All! This playground is going to be fun for little ones but also is a great one for the 10+ ages as well. There is a toddler area with balance beams (logs), sandbox and short gymnastic bars (although these were too hot to touch mid-day). The older children will love the challenge inside the main structure! Word of caution, it can be easy to lose sight of your kiddos since they can enter and exit the giant play structure from multiple sides and heights. You’ll either get to spend time inside there too 😉 or make sure that they know which side you’re on for when they come out. Unique Features: When researching this park, we discovered that it was made in honor of Radio Broadcaster and Colorado House Representative, Paco Sanchez. To pay tribute, many of the park’s elements were created with radio and music in mind. The most extraordinary would definitely be the giant 1950’s inspired microphone dominating the middle of the playground. Inside of the microphone is an incredible maze of ropes, with climbing and balancing features galore! The girls absolutely loved the challenge of climbing different ways to the top, eventually getting to the “Bird’s Nest” (see top picture to see my youngest peeking down) or to the entrance of the spiral slide inside. Another unique feature that we haven’t seen anywhere else was this bouncing rope seesaw! The girls and I loved exploring the park and identifying additional elements bringing the Radio Music theme to life. Some favorites were the microphone cord, speaker climbing wall, sound wave rope nets and musical chimes! There was a lot of construction going on south of the playground and we were ecstatic discovering it was for Phase 2! Guess we’ll be planning an update to this post next summer! What a creative and fun way to pay tribute to Denver’s history. Have you been to this ultimate playground? Did you know it was a giant vintage microphone? I thought it was some sort of beehive when I was looking at the pictures! We want to hear from you! Leave your comments/questions below and, if you think others would love this park, share it using the social media icons below. Thank you and have fun!
If you live anywhere near Thornton, or even if you don’t, you have got to check out Amber Creek Park! It was recommended to me by a friend that lives in that area and she wasn’t kidding when she said it was amazing! Address: 6745 E 134th Ave, Thornton, CO 80602 Recommended Ages: All kids will enjoy this park! There is a more traditional play structure with slides, a disc swing, baby swings and spinners for the little ones. My older kids went straight for the dual zipline and rock climbing! Unique Features: The side by side ziplines were definitely our favorite part. The girls raced each other, tried sitting and standing, and the whole experience brought so much laughter! Here are a few of our favorite zipline moments… Another unique feature was this amazing curved rock wall! Typically, if there is a rock wall, it is usually just another ladder option or it is like climbing a giant boulder…this was so much better! There were even hand holds underneath for added difficulty. Have you heard of an OmniSpinner? This is a seated merry-go-round that was made with transfer points for easy access with wheelchairs or walkers. Such an improvement over the traditional merry-go-round where kids fly off the sides! Or is that just what happens with my kids…? Things to Know: There is a portable bathroom, large shaded shelter and basketball court. We were there for over an hour and, if I had packed more snacks, we would’ve stayed even longer! It is a playground they’ll be entertained by and scenery that you’ll want to soak up. Truly a great Colorado playground! We can’t wait to hear that you’ve visited this park! Which would be your favorite – the ziplines or rock wall?
Baseball lovers of Colorado, let me introduce you to Northern Lights park! This playground is located in Thornton at 13800 York St, Thornton, CO 80241 and is surrounded by the Northern Lights ball fields. Recommended Ages: ALL! We loved this park because there really was something for everyone. (Disclaimer: the sign says it was designed for kids ages 5 to 12, however almost all of the kids there were under 5 and having a great time.) Accessibility: There are ramps throughout the structure making it easy for everyone to participate and play. There were also games & learning signs throughout the structure with mazes to solve, a matching game and even a place to learn sign language. Unique Features: The baseball theme was done so well, even more so when you look at the aerial view! There is a baseball shaped spinner over a glove outlined floor – it doesn’t spin very fast but has two levels so many kids can be on it together. More favorite parts were the “rolling” slide, disc shaped swing and all of the monkey bar/obstacle course type features! When to go: The park is surrounded by many baseball fields so I would not recommend summer weekends unless you’ve made sure a tournament isn’t going on that day. Weekdays have been almost completely open though! There’s a large parking lot, bathroom building (as well as a portable in case the building is locked), a WORKING drinking fountain & water bottle filler and 2 large shelters for shade and picnic tables. What to take: Snacks and sunscreen always for park trips! We also would recommend taking your baseball or wiffle ball gear. There are many fields to practice on, including a toddler size field! Baseball fans or not, kids of all ages will love this park and it is a great place to meet a group of friends! Leave us a comment with any questions or to shout out your favorite feature of the park. For all of your little future astronauts, you have got to make a quick trip to Westminster, Colorado! Quail Crossing Park is a small playground in a neighborhood just off of 136th & Huron, but it will bring your kiddos so much joy! WHERE IS IT?? First off, I will mention that I have found THREE different addresses for this park! The most accurate (that I got from standing right where you park) is here. If you just find the park on your phone maps, it may take you a block east of where you need to be – the clue is if you end up in a culdesac staring at a bunch of grass, you need to go a block west to get to the playground 😉 I absolutely love when a theme is portrayed through the entire playground and this park is no exception! There is the mission control pad, flames coming out of the slides, even the flooring under the swings makes you feel like you’re flying through space! This park may not take up a large area, but within the space shuttle, there are 3 different slides, including a covered one THREE stories high! What to know: There are no bathrooms and very little shade. Your kids will absolutely love this park but make sure to make a bathroom stop prior to arriving (there is a nearby Dunkin Donuts and Walmart 😉 ). Also note that the slides and spaceship disc are all dark blue and get hot so try to get there early or on a cloudy day! Have you visited Quail Crossing Park? CONTRIBUTED BY KARA PIERACCINI Have I mentioned how awesome Okinawa parks are? Every once in a while, the kids and I find a park that doesn’t have much to it. Sometimes they aren’t overly excited about them (the kids have become park snobs!), while other times, one aspect of the park gets them more excited …

Just into the Colorado foothills in the small town of Lyons, you will find a true hidden gem of a park! LaVern M. Johnson park was not just a playground, it was a DESTINATION so plan to stay there for at least a few hours and invite friends along! Address: 600 Park Dr, Lyons, CO 80540 Unique Features: Where do I begin?? There is so much to this park that kids of all ages will enjoy! What struck me first was the whimsical feel to the play house and other play structures. It brings out so much imagination with who built the house and there is so much included outside of just slides, like the rock climbing side, fireman pole inside, triangle shaped windows and rope bridge. What to Bring: I am sure that you will be there for a while so take lunches, snacks and drinks. We went on a warm day so Rehydrate was an absolute must! I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of shady areas between the picnic areas and well established trees but plenty of time can be spent by the creek and hiking around so don’t forget sunscreen. There is a large field and some smaller grassy areas so taking along sports equipment would be a great addition (soccer, football, bocce ball). You can also kayak or tube down the river in the summer, go fly fishing and play in many water features so taking some clothes/shoes that can get wet (or an extra set of dry clothes 😉 ) would make for even more of an adventure! Guess what?! There’s even ICE SKATING here during the winter! Birthday or Reunion coming up? This would be such a great place for a family gathering! If you would like more information about reserving one of the shelters, click here. For a longer stay, check out there camping options as well! Parking: There is a large parking area by the campsite and some spots as you get closer to the playground. Note that there is a cost for parking ($5 for 4 hours) so find the kiosk to print the ticket for your car window. Anything else you’d like to know or add? Comment below! Last fall, a brand new park opened in Broomfield, Colorado so of course we had to check it out! McKay Lake Nature Play Area is one of the most creative playgrounds we’ve seen! Address: 2301 W 138th Ave, Broomfield, CO 80023 Recommended ages: Elementary (playground & small bike park) through High School (large bike park https://broomfield.org/BikePark) Do you have kids under the age of 6? What you should know is that your kids will enjoy the park but that it isn’t the kind of place where you sit and they go play. It is amazing and creative, however, there are many parts of the park where you will lose sight of your littles (see pic of tunnels 😉 ). Unique Features: The most unique feature was the Beaver Dam, a log structure for ages 13+. It is definitely a high climb so fair warning to all the parents, it may take your breath away watching your little make their way to the top! Another unique feature of the park is the Nature Fitness Loop. A short walk to the south of the park takes you around to a handful of obstacles to get some exercise while you’re there. Imagination Factor: This is not your typical park, this is an adventure and the possibilities for imagination are endless! Kids can take hide and seek to a whole other level and “secret spy” was a huge hit. Bring along: There is very little shade so sunscreen is a must! If you have room, bring along your bikes to ride the dirt hills. And, maybe my most important takeaway, you need wet wipes! No matter where your kids play, they will come out with dirt on their hands, clothes, knees…everywhere. We learned the hard way as I had nothing like that with me and my daughter took a spill on the bike park, covering her legs with scrapes and dirt 🙁 Neighborhood & Places Nearby: McKay Lake has a beautiful 1.6 mile trail on the other side of the large bike path. Also nearby is Quail Creek park and a King Soopers if you need to pick something up! Bathrooms are something I always like to mention since little ones give you next to no warning before they’re needed. At this park, there is a portable restroom near the parking lot off of Zuni. I encourage you to check out the McKay Lake Nature Play Area! Have you gone there or have questions? Leave us a comment! Kids' playgrounds are supposed to be a hub for a child's imagination, so the designs must yield to creativity. While Danish brands such as LEGO and MONSTRUM are superstars with innovative playset creations, some jungle gym designers just seem to miss the mark.
