This week’s free shape is a perfect one for some quick DIY art. Here I took a store-bought primed canvas and turned it into a bright and cheery home decor piece with a little acrylic paint, vinyl, and my CAMEO. Start by selecting your background color palette. I wanted my colors to look like a sunset I’d recently seen, so I chose blues, purples, pinks, and oranges out of my acrylic craft paint stash. Paint your canvas with a coat of gesso if it has not already been primed. Then paint broad strokes of each color and blend them a bit. I wasn’t too concerned about perfect blending, since the vinyl design was the actual focal point of my piece. I wanted my sentiment to appear in a vertical arrangement, so I cut apart the words in my sentiment design using the Knife Tool. Then I cleaned up any rough edges on my four separate words using the Point Editing Tool. Rearrange the words vertically. I also needed to resize the “what” part of my design slightly so that the vertical sentiment looked a little more cohesive. Add a pretty floral silhouette shape to your design and cut all of this out of black vinyl. Weed and transfer the vinyl to your painted canvas using the scraper tool and transfer paper. I also cut a a strip of black vinyl to use around the perimeter of my piece to finish off the edges. Sometimes the free shape just takes a few quick snips to be exactly the design you were looking for! How are you going to use it? Shapes Used: Do What You Love {FREE Shape of the Week} Dandelions

Optical illusions are always fun and fascinating as they trick our brains into perceiving things differently than they actually are. It may sound cliché, but illusion drawings are our reminder that the things we see are not always as they seem.

Did you know you could use your CAMEO to etch more than just glass? Head over to the Silhouette blog for a little autumn etching...on ceramic! I just love how these cappuccino mugs turned out. They are begging for some hot apple cider (with a side of apple cider donuts :) )! If you're interested in getting more out of your etching cream, how about trying it on marble, mirrors, porcelain, or slate?

Photography has many tips and tricks of the trade used both by amateurs and famous photographers - the many uses of light, perspective, darkness, exposure, and many other bits are what makes beautiful pictures. All of that wouldn't come to one unified look without shadows though as they are what gives the image depth or in some cases, changes the view entirely. Also, they're free, they're everywhere, and there's no limit to what you can do with them if you have the know-how.
Most of the time when I buy a new stamp set, I choose it because it's pretty or something really different from what's in my stash already. Every so often, though, I see a set that would be perfect for a specific recipient and I grab it right away. The cards I make with these sets are always the most fun! The images in the Lake Time Fun stamp set from Hero Arts remind me so much of my son and husband. They've been known to get up at the crack of dawn to spend a few hours fishing together. My son loves this time he spends with my husband so much that I had to make a little stamped scene card for him. CREATING AN INK BLENDED SUNSET/SUNRISE Trace a circle onto a piece of Neenah Classic Crest Solar White Cardstock using the die you will be cutting the scene out with. Mask off the bottom quarter of the circle using a piece of masking paper or Post-It tape. Blend Carved Pumpkin, Squeezed Lemonade, Salty Ocean, Blueprint Sketch, and Chipped Sapphire Distress Ink above the masked area with a foam blending tool as shown to create a sunset/sunrise sky backdrop. Move the tape or masking paper to cover the top of the circle now instead and blend Tumbled Glass and Faded Jeans Distress Ink below the masked area to create the water. Add a tiny bit of Carved Pumpkin Distress Ink to the water as shown to look like a reflection. STAMPING THE SILHOUETTE IMAGES Place the inked panel into a MISTI and position the silhouette stamps from the Lake Time Fun stamp set on top where desired. Stamp the images three times using Versafine Onyx Black Ink for a deep black, solid image. You may need to stamp the pier and grasses separately first to ensure the figures sit directly on top of the pier. Die cut the image out using the previously selected circle die. STAMPING THE BACKGROUND IMAGE Trim a piece of Pitch Black Cardstock to 4.25 x 5.5. Lay the Fishing Pattern Background Stamp face up on your work surface and apply Versamark Ink all over. Place the Pitch Black panel onto the background stamp, cover with a piece of scrap paper, and lightly press with your fingers all over the panel for a good impression. Add clear embossing powder to the panel and melt with a heat tool. COLORING THE BACKGROUND IMAGE For a little interest and to complement the golden colors in my sunset panel, I decided to color in the fishing lures on the background image with a Metallic Gold colored pencil. Color most, but not all, of the open sections in the design for a subtle, warm look. CARD ASSEMBLY Adhere the background panel to a top-folding A2-sized white card base with tape runner. Stamp a sentiment from the Lake Time Fun stamp set in Versamark Ink, cover with white embossing powder, and melt with a heat tool. Trim the sentiment out with a paper trimmer or scissors and add to the lower right corner of the card with tape runner. Pop the stamped sunset scene up on top using foam adhesive. I hope you enjoyed this clean and simple sunset scene card and thanks so much for stopping by today.
