Ta da! My newest apple on Fiberluscious. I had just planned on making a PDF pattern for my pear pattern, which I will, I promise. But I got to thinking about originality and how we all love to leave our own mark on this world. Thats such an important part of creating. Its a desire we all share. I can't say my designs are completely original. They may begin with a simple pattern of which I can't seem to copy without changing its shape, size and dimension. Here are a few of my favorite patterns- If you are a seller of your work its very important to draft your own patterns. Most designers will ask that you only use their patterns for personal use. Creating a pattern really is a challenging and rewarding experience. It frees you to sell your pieces without stepping on another artist's copyright. Although flattery is a compliment, it also really ticks some artists off, to the point that they deny Pinterest Pinning and occasionally post horrible things about you on their blogs or forums. I usually don't get upset. No two people ever do the same thing the same way. I just ask that you don't get rich on my designs with at least not giving me a bit of credit for your inspiration. For those of you who want to do this, but can't quite find the time and feel exhausted just wondering how one would go about such an adventure, let me guide you through it. I promise you a complete sense of satisfaction and pride when you apply this to your creating. The challenge is all just one step in the journey. So lets go! Here are a few tools that may come in handy for this and other patterns. Paper. I use grid paper for many of my patterns. It helps me to keep things symtrical. However, you can use scrap paper, newspaper, kraft paper or cardboard. A soft measuring tape, a ruler, a protractor, a compass and an eraser. I suggest you create a prototype. For that you will need muslin, fiberfill, a sewing machine, needle and thread. It is very helpful to have a model or something close to the size of your finished project is optional so you can gauge the approximage size of your final pattern. A calculator is also necessary. Step One- Make your measurements. Begin with an object close to the size and shape of your desired pattern. I know its not fair that I am using a finished apple to show you the measurements, but stay with me. I'll make it clear how you can begin with simple ball shapes, such as the silver ornament above. Here is an illustration showing you how these measurements become the foundation for a very simple shape. Note, you can easily flip this diagram upside down and create a pear pattern... and you thought that this was going to be hard. Here is how to draft your pattern onto paper. Begin by recording all measurements. I am writing mine on the top upper corner of my pattern paper. Then draw a line showing the height of your desired pattern. If you are beginning with a simple round shape, simply extend the tape measure up past the top of the ball and inch or two. Round the measuring tape off on top to simulate the curve of the 3-D object. (Its better to over estimate this measurement than under estimate it.) Now you need to come up with your width measurements. Sorry, you will be needing a bit of math here, but it's not hard and you don't have to be exact. Next add your 2 width measurements. Extend how big those areas should be. Now its time to create a shape. Each end needs to come to a gradual point. The curve should be rather drastic. If the curve is long and gentle, you will create a pointed end. Not a great shape if you want your pincushion to sit straight up. It would just tip over. however, you may want that kind of a curve for the top of a bosc pear top. You will need to join the two sections in the middle. You can curve that line in and make it shapely. If that line is straight from one section to the other, your final shape will look kind of squatty. Do what ever you like the best. Your the boss! Now add a seam allowance all the way around your pattern shape. I usually use an approximate 1/4" allowance. This is one time that you don't have to be a perfectionist. Do what is comfortable. Just do it the same way each time for each section. Once you think you have your pattern, I suggest that you create a muslin prototype. This is so worth the time. You don't want to use your favorite fabric only to find that your shape is not at all as you imagined. Use muslin and cut 6 sections. When I created my muslin prototype I realized that I wasn't too fond of the shape. I was close, but it just was off. Here is a photo of the final muslin shape, the original pattern draft and the final pattern piece. Just a note. When adjusting your pattern, do it in small increments. Eveyr change will be multiplied by 6. A 1/4 inch change will create a 1 1/2 inch total different in the final piece. How can you determine just the right change? Why don't you pin little tucks or let out a few seams in your muslin piece. I often don't sew it completely shut, so I can remove the stuffing and make my changes on the original instead of having to resew a new muslin piece for each change. Save your muslin piece. It makes a great tool for your embellishement design. Here are some different versions of my pear pattern. Just a few small changes in the pattern shape can make a big differnce in the final piece. Here is my very first pear. For this pear, I elongated the pattern. The top is longer and more drawn out than my first pear. Just a note, using different fabrics can change the final shape of your pattern. These 2 apples are from the exact pattern. The pieced patchwork caused everything to be tighter and look smaller. The original pattern is bigger and plumper. I love both of these apples Experiment. Have fun. Once you have the outsides figured out, embellishment is next....oh the creative process just never ends.

Who doesn't just love strawberries? Even with it Fall you can't resist them. Though the season may be over it still can bring that brightness into your day even when the weather is a bit cooler. Lately, I've been busy making strawberry pincushions thanks to my sweet friend, Erin who invited me to the Strawberry Pincushion Swap. I made my partner a prettified pincushion but changed the top with adding a pretty mini hexie flower with some of my favorite strawberry fabrics. I loved making this version of Ayumi's pincushion. I then made a mini strawberry pincushion and attached it to some cute birdie embroidery scissors for my partner. I packaged up a few extra plush strawberries with the pincushions in a lovely strawberry basket and added some strawberry ribbon. And it is winging its way to my partner and should hopefully be arriving soon. I hope she likes her package. Then yesterday I received the most amazing package from Amy of Nanacompany. Even the box was as cute as can be!! So much strawberry goodness I tell you!! I just love the amazing large felt leaves with wool strawberries adorned to a fabulous pincushion jar! Then a sweet plush strawberry pincushion and an adorable strawberry needle book. I have been truly spoiled! Aren't these the most fabulous leaves and wool strawberries!! I love how creative Amy is!! She is so talented!! I can't wait to put the plush strawberry pincushion and needle book to use!! They are perfect!! For shop news, I added some lovely new Atsuko fabrics. Hey, Hey, Happy Wednesday! I've got a little project for you. I don't know about you but I can never have enough pin cushions or things to carry my supplies in. I am always on the quest for the perfect way to carry around my projects etc. For awhile now, when I have a "night time, movie watching while I sew project" I carry my supplies up from my studio in a little bowl. It has worked just fine until I came up with this little flower bowl. It's a little fabric bowl but its go a bit of fluff in the center to use as a pin cushion as well. Now I can stick my pins and needles in a little thread and a small pair of snips and I am set to sew. First of all, do you remember my flower mug rug project here? Well it turns out, its the same pattern pieces. You can find and print them here. Here's what you will need: Petal fabric 1/8 yard Center fabric 8" x 4" Heavy Craft Interfacing, I used Heat n Bond Fusible Heavy Craft Weight Interfacing Batting 4" x 4" Small pom pom fringe 1/2 yard Felt 4" x 4" Fiberfill Felt for leaf 4" x 4" Coordinating floss 1. Start by cutting four sets of petals. Cut 4 petals from the heavy weight interfacing as well. I cut mine a 1/4" smaller so the seams would be nicer and then ironed hem on. Sew around the curved portion of the petal. Clip, turn, and press. 2. Iron on a piece of interfacing to one of the centers of the flower. 3. Divide and then mark with a pin, four quarters on the center. Start by pinning the center of one of the petals to one of the pins on the center. Continue pinning each side until it is completely pin. 4. Continue pinning the three petals on just as you did the first one in step 3. It will be a bit cumbersome at this point, but you're ready to sew around the center now. After sewing clip the edges around the center. Flip the petals up so that the center is the bottom of the bowl. 5. Take the remaining center and place a layer of batting underneath. Next, place a little larger circle of felt underneath the batting. Sew and a spill shape like marked on the pattern piece to hold everything together. Clip every 1/8-1/4 inch around the felt to create a fringe. 6. With floss hand stitch the pom pom fringe around the outside of the circle. 7. Hand stitch the center to the center of the bowl, it will be a bit larger so you'll have to gather the edge every now and then to make it fit in the center. When you gather it that bit the center will pouf up a bit in the middle. Before you reach the end of stitching the center on, tuck in a small amount of fiberfill to fill that space. 8. Cut out a leaf from the green felt. I chose to hand stitch around the outer edge of the felt leaf. Tack stitch it onto the bottom of the bowl. Let's have a Hen Party!!! Supply List: Two 3-1/2” to 5” squares fabric for chick body (cotton, upholstery fabric, pre-quilted fabric, etc.) Two or Three 3" squares for tail (same or coordinating fabric) Two or Three red 1-1/4” squares for comb One yellow/gold 1-1/4” square for beak About 1/2 cup rice, ground walnut shells, silica sand, or use polyester fiberfill for stuffing (your choice) Instructions: PREPARE comb, beak and tail pieces: FOLD each square in half to form a triangle. PRESS. FOLD in half again and PRESS again. LAY OUT one of the chick body squares right side up, and ARRANGE beak and comb pieces as ↓ pictured (align raw edges, nestle/overlap the comb pieces). PIN- or GLUE-baste to secure beak and comb in place. (I use Jillily's Appli-glue) PLACE the other square right sides together over the comb and beak. Pin in place, then STITCH along the lines indicated, using 1/4” seam allowances: Start in the corner opposite the beak and comb. Leave an opening at the bottom through which you will be able to turn the chicken right-side out. Leave the last side OPEN. LAY OUT tail pieces as you'd like. PIN- or GLUE-baste pieces together. SANDWICH your tail piece in the remaining open seam of the chicken: Align the top and bottom seams and center the tail. This will form the pyramid shape of the chicken. PIN, then STITCH across that seam. TURN your chicken right side out through the opening (hatch your chick). STUFF with your choice of filling; WHIP-STITCH the opening closed. This post has been re-worked, again, to perfection, and now including a new walnut shell stuffing option. I finally found a great place for my grandmother's spools of thread from the 50's. TUTORIAL FOR PINCUSHION INGREDIENTS: 1. FABRIC - Pick 2 fabrics that look good together. 2. BIAS TAPE - Joann fabrics is the best place to get your bias tape. Their online site has more colors available than at the store. When choosing bias tape, you have 2 options: DOUBLE FOLD 1/4", shown here in red. This product is "ready to go", but the options of colors are limited. If you don't find a color you like, go to the next option. SINGLE FOLD 1/2", shown in blue and has lots more color options available. You will have to fold this in 1/2 lengthwise and press to get the Double Fold 1/4". When you iron it, DO NOT USE STARCH OR STEAM, getting it wet, will quickly undo the pressing that is already there. You will need 2 YARDS OF BIAS TAPE. 3. TEMPLATES - Make 2 circle templates from card stock. The larger for cutting, the smaller for sewing. cutting circle - 8" sewing circle - 5 1/2" 4. SPOOLS - You will need 10 to 13 small spools. If you use the vintage type, shown above, you will need 11. If you purchase your spools from Walmart or Joann Fabrics, you will need 13. (Adjustments. If your spools of thread are the small ones from Joanns or Walmart, which come 10 or 12 to a pack, you will want the space between the 2 circles to be 1/4 inch less. The spools I used, my grandmother's, were a little larger.) 5. WALNUT SHELLS - Walnut shells puts some weight to your pin cushion, and the shells sharpen your needles (so I've heard, correct me if I'm wrong). You can purchase a bag at Petco, 7 lbs for $10. They have several options, make sure you get pure walnut shells, with nothing else added. 5. ELASTIC - This elastic, can be up to 1/4". SEWING INSTRUCTIONS: Sew bias tape around both circles, using thread the same color as your bias tape. Sew close to the edge of the bias tape. When you take your bias tape out of the package, if you look at it, one side is a tiny bit wider than the other. When sewing your bias tape on, put that WIDER side on the BOTTOM, this will insure that you catch the bottom piece as you sew along the top. On the right side of one of your circles you just cut out, mark the smaller circle with chalk or erasable ink as shown below. Stitch seam, back stitching at beginning and end, leaving an opening for stuffing. Do not stuff yet. Mark perpendicular 1/2" lines along outer edge, every 2 1/4" for vintage spools, and 1 3/4" for smaller spools. Align the opening you left for stuffing as shown above with your stitching lines along the outside. This will make stuffing easier. You may need to make several attempts to make your markings equal in length. Back stitch on both ends. Stuff inner circle and hand stitch closed. Thread thin elastic through each spool and in between sewing lines as shown below. Pull elastic together, and tie a knot. Work the knot in to hide it. These darling pincushions make great gifts.

Delve into your box of completed stitcheries and begin making pincushions! That's what you do. Life is on hold at the moment as we wait for the phone call which will have us driving into town to pick up Cully May and bring her home to stay with us while Blossom heads to hospital with Ross for the birth of their second child. It's all rather exciting for this Nana who waits patiently in her sewing room and busies herself with fabric and thread, whiling away the hours and days. But it's all rather uncomfortable for Blossom who is measuring 41 weeks and not her documented 39 weeks...who would most probably burst should we drop a pin on her tummy...who has weathered the threat of a very prem labour ten weeks ago and carefully taken each extra week as it was given...who's feet have swollen and don't want to go walking...who's baby is now head engaged and in the posterior position which is a always a tad more painful but especially as Blossom has scoliosis. Yes, it's all rather wearying for my girl, yet her laughter as Cully May smothers her with kisses and hugs fills the room, and her smile continues to sparkle. Between the groans. I remember that feeling, when you're so close to the end of your pregnancy but it seems like time is standing still and an hour becomes a day becomes a week. You know it won't be long until that precious bundle of love is placed in your arms, but still you long for the labour to begin 'now'. This wee baby decided not to share my birthday (Wednesday) and in all probability will arrive before her paternal grandad's birthday in early March. Seems bub would prefer a birthday all his/her own right between the two of us. Fair enough, I say. So while all this is going on I have prepared the spare room for Cully May, stocked up on little girl necessities - toothbrush, hair brush, natural soap, a dolly (she'll be so surprised!) and a pretty pillow. I'll bunk in with her while she is here as Cully's never had a sleepover at Nana and Pop's house without her mummy before, and I'm sure Bob-the-dog will snuggle up on the bed too. She's missed Bob since he's been staying with us so I'm sure having him to play with again will keep her occupied when I need to collapse in a chair and catch my breath every so often. So, back to the pincushion...I am trying to keep the house as ordered and toddler friendly as possible right now so my sewing room has most everything in it's place and out of reach of tiny hands. But I really needed to 'make' something today and decided to go through my box of completed stitcheries for a few which could be made into pocket pincushions. These were perfect for my plan... Pink and green together are a marriage made in heaven, but then add the subtle pop of blue and what a pretty picture... One pincushion made and three more to follow... ...all dependent on what happens over the weekend. I have everything I need for the next three pincushions in one place which makes it easy to pack away should Cully May be here before they're finished. Just adjust the pocket size to suit the width of height of your stitchery, or fussy cut fabric for the pocket as I did... For the new pincushion I added 1" of pink check fabric down both sides of the stitchery as I like a bit of contrast...and I love pink. What do you do when you're marking time until something wonderful happens? I had a lovely quiet birthday, just ducked out for a late morning coffee and cake at Rosie's. The day before I was caught in the middle of a very severe storm out on the highway and it rattled me a little, so with the forecast of more such storms throughout the rest of the week I stayed close to home. Rosie's is just up the road so it was lovely to catch up for a little bit, but as soon as the black clouds began to gather I returned home. Mr E was taking me out for dinner but we postponed it until Thursday evening, and this works for us as in our family we celebrate a birthday for three days. We have an un-birthday, a birthday, and another un-birthday! On Tuesday (the first un-birthday) my beloved brought me flowers and on my birthday a pair of beautiful silver and turquoise earrings plus a very special kitchen gift. Dinner at our favourite Indian restaurant on Thursday rounded the low key celebrations off wonderfully. I was spoiled with gifts from my husband, but also from Blossom and my dear friends Rosie, Wendy and Margaret. Some of the blessings... So that's my birthday over with for another year. I was 59 and have decided these next 12 months should be lived to the full as life is a gift from God and to be honest I don't think I've treasured this most amazing gift enough. It was Blossom who made me appreciate this life with a new clarity the other day as we huddled together with Cully May wedged between us on the couch, watching through her window the remnant of a storm passing over. You see, my mum died when I was three and I have just two dim memories of her from the weeks just before a car accident took her life, but Blossom being so close to giving birth has been thinking a lot about my mother as this birthday drew near and talked to me about how the excitement and love she feels is just what my own mummy would have felt as her day of giving birth approached. Blossom's eyes filled with tears of joy speaking of this and then my own tears fell...from a deep happiness I'd never considered. Isn't that beautiful? To suddenly realise at age 59 that you were once that child in the womb, eagerly awaited, loved and cherished...that the love your mother felt for you was very, very real, and even though you barely remember her it doesn't change the depth of her love and the joy she had with you for those precious first three years. The gifts received for my 59th birthday were so beautiful, but the gift of Blossom's insight was the icing on the cake. You know, precious one, you also have life and that is something to treasure. I've had some shocking things happen to me over the years, but those events have not dominated my thoughts or my heart for many a year. Jesus tells us to put our hand to the plough and not look back...and that has been the one thing which kept me moving forward these 27 years as a Christian. It was so very clear to me that a field ploughed when looking back will never be a good field, will never achieve it's purpose. In fact it would make no sense. If I allow the past to hold my attention I will forever be immobilised from sowing the seeds of a healthy life crop and reaping the good fruits of my labour. This choice, because it is a choice, was not easy at first, and sometimes I slip up and endure a short season of wallowing and self pity, but it does me no good and robs my loved ones of precious memories we could be making in the 'now'. So I choose to look ahead, right at Jesus, and to walk each day with eyes forward, letting go of the past and reaching ahead to what comes tomorrow - and in light of Blossom's words life is even more precious than I once believed. I spent a very enjoyable week with a lovely friend who came up for a visit from Sydney, Australia. As she is a quilter too, there was of course much talk about quilts, fabric, quilting books, patterns etc. She brought me a lovely little kit to make a "Thirties" pin cushion. We decided to make one each and had a cosy day at home stitching. This is my pin cushion, all stitched by hand I might add, and this is the one my friend made!
