Daddy’s Girl Chatelaine Kraft-Tex project for July color of the month Marsala Created by: Normajean Brevik [email protected] I probably don’t need to tell you how sentimental quilters can get over a simple article of clothing. This beautiful and functional chatelaine is made from a men’s necktie and is perfect for the sentimentalist and recyclist in all of us. The use of the amazing leather-like product called Kraft-tex ™ by C and T Publishing (ctpub.com) makes this an easy and quick project that is sure to stir memories of the person who wore the necktie. Beginners and experts alike will enjoy the ease of this project that simply adds pockets and a pin cushion to a ready-made tie. Material List: *Men’s necktie, cleaned and spot free · Kraft-tex ™, I used prewashed Marsala color but Kraft-tex comes in a variety of colors · ¼” satin Ribbon for loops and scissors leash · 3 - ½” loose leaf ring binder rings or a small spring clips · Thread to coordinate with the project for top stitching · Fiber fill for pin cushion · Clips to hold Kraft-tex ™ in place while sewing (do not pin through Kraft-tex ™) Let’s begin: Measuring for the overall correct length of your chatelaine is simple. Drape the necktie around your neck and decide what length is best for you. Mine measures 50“. NOTE: The end that you will shorten is the NARROW end of the tie NOT the wide end! Once you’ve decided on a good length add ½” for turning the raw edge and cut off the remainder. (Save this cut piece to create your pin cushion later.) Tuck the raw edge into the tie to form a finished edge and stitch closed. Pockets and Tabs Pattern Directions: There are only 5 simple pattern pieces to create for your Kraft-tex. Wide end inside pocket (1) and wide end outside pocket (1), scissors pocket (1), tabs for pin cushion and scissors leash (2). (Please note, I am right handed and wanted the scissors to be on the right. If you are a lefty then adjust the angle of the wide pocket and reverse the placement on the tie.) · Wide End outside pocket, pattern: Each necktie will differ in shape and width so you will need to make a photocopy of the lower portion of the wide end of the actual necktie in your copier (reducing the copy size to 95%) to have a pattern to work with. 1. Once you have made your copy carefully measure up 6" from the tip of the tie copy and draw a line. 2. Cut out the pattern using your drawn line as the top of the pattern and around the rest of the copy. 3. Create a pocket angle. Measure 2” up on the left edge bottom (edge NOT tip) and make a small mark. 4. Use a ruler to draw a line from the mark you just made to the top of the right-side edge and cut. (see photos) · - Wide end inside pocket: cut Kraft-tex ™ 2 ½” x 5 ½” Use the pattern that you created for the outside pocket as a guide to cut the bottom point of the pattern for the inside pocket. · - Narrow End scissor holster is cut after the length is determined and raw edges turned. Measure the width of the narrow end and subtract 1/8” Cut a piece of Kraft-tex ™ by that measurement X 7”. · - Tabs are measured and cut after all the other pieces have been sewn. General directions for cutting and placement of Kraft-tex pieces: · DO NOT USE PINS ON KRAFT-TEX. USE A LOW TACK DOUBLE SIDED REMOVABLE TAPE IF YOU NEED TO SECURE THE PATTERN PIECES FOR CUTTING. (I just held them with my hand to trace) · Trace the pattern pieces to the right side of the Kraft-tex with pencil and cut out pieces. Sewing directions: Inside front pocket - Begin by centering and lining up your inside front pocket to the tie. Use clips to hold in place and top stitch the Kraft-tex to the tie around the sides and bottom ONLY. · Top front pocket, pattern – Line up over the inside pocket and use clips to hold in place. Top stitch to tie around the sides and bottom ONLY. · Scissors holster, pattern – Fold the stitched end up 2 ½” and crease to form the holster. Line up the folded bottom at the bottom of the narrow end of the tie. Use clips to hold the holster in place. Top stitch to tie all the way around the outside of the holster. · Top tabs- The tabs are measured and added now. The size is determined by measuring 7” from the top of both the scissor holster and wide end pocket. Cut a piece of Kraft-tex the width of that part of the tie minus 1/8” X 1”. Ribbon loops (below) will be added before sewing to the tie. · Ribbon Loops - Cut 4” of ribbon for each loop. Position your tabs and place ribbon ends 1” under the tab to create the loop (the ends will be secured when caught in the top stitching). Secure with clips and stitch close to the edge all the way around both tabs. Pin Cushion directions: · Using the left-over tail piece that you cut from the tie: Stitch by hand or machine a little pouch with the tie end and stuff with fiber fill to create a pin cushion. Turn the raw edges in and close. Add a satin ribbon loop. (Note: I opened up the small end piece and placed right sides together to seam it, then stuffed and stitched the top closed and added the ribbon loop.) Final touches: · Ribbon leash for your scissors – Create a looped knot at ends of a piece of ribbon approximately 20” long (adjust as you see fit). Attach your tiny ring binder clips to either end of the loops. Clip one end to your scissors and the other to the ribbon loop above the holster. · Pin Cushion – Attach another tiny ring binder clip to both your pin cushion and the loop on other side of the chatelaine. We have been a sick household this last week, all four of us have had this annoying cold. My sewing room has not progressed much as a result. I am getting quite impatient for my own space, so to satisfy that need to some degree I joined a sew-along run by Ros from Sew Delicious, and made a quilted mat for my sewing machine. One little step closer to my dream sewing space. I used Fig Tree fabrics, except one square which is Lecien (the square with the embroidery on it). The backing fabric is tiny little white dots on beige. You know me, any excuse to add a little hand embroidery, so I stitched on some sewing icons. I pieced my quilt top by butting the seams, and kept the quilting simple - just straight lines on either side of the seam using my presser foot as the guide. I was a little petrified about making my own binding and machine stitching it, but it was easier than I thought it would be. For the binding I used Sew Delicious' tutorial, and also these two other tutorials have been very helpful (as I am one of those people who can't possibly try something new until I have read 17 tutorials on the subject first). Diary of a Quilter's binding tutorial was great for the mitreing of corners, and Red Pepper Quilts' tutorial shows you how to make a continuous cross-grain binding (with diagonal seams) and how to machine stitch it. It's not too late to join the sew-along, it consists of a tutorial in three parts and only takes a couple of hours. It's suitable for beginner quilters with clear photos and instructions, and quite a simple project overall (especially if you use shop-bought bias binding). Ros also has a fantastic tutorial to make a sewing machine cover - I simply NEED to make one to match my new mat soon. Did you spot the strawberries? All my favourite bloggers have been making them recently - I simply had to join in (see the ones made by Amy from Nana Company, Kristyne from Pretty By Hand, and Sandra from Cherry Heart here, here and here). They are so, well, me, and wonderfully satisfying (and quick) to make. I never seem to have a pincushion nearby when I need one, so these will be spread all over my working space. < I don't think I will be able to stop making them now. I finally found a great use for scraps of my favourite fabrics (that I can't bring myself to discard). They can be immortalised in pincushion form. So I will probably end up with a collection of hundreds of them!

I love hedgehogs. I would consider moving to New Zealand just so that I could have them living in my yard, even though I hear that they can be a real nuisance. Oh, but they are so cute! And to be able to say hedgehogs live at the bottom of your garden would be a rather amazing thing to say, as if you lived in a children's story book. They are certainly a nicer looking than the snotty slugs and fuzzy-fat-goo-squirting caterpillars I keep accidentally stepping on in my own garden. Blerk. I remember my mother making me one of these when I was very young and just beginning to sew. It's a perfect addition to a youngsters first sewing kit. The faux fur does a great job of emulating a hedgehog's spines, but you don't have to use fur. Maybe a fun printed cotton or some towelling. Of course, she won't look as prickly, but you'll just have to stick more pins in her! What you need: - 20cm square (or equivalent measure) of fabric (we'll call this 'fabric 1') for head, belly and ears. I used a woollen fabric which, although looks great all finished, was an absolute SOD to work with on such a small scale. Lots of fraying. If you have some about and you also have the patience of a saint, by all means, use it. A strong cotton or linen would be less taxing on the nerves. - 20cm square of fabric (fabric 2) for the back. As mentioned faux fur is great, but towelling or cotton is fine, too. - Sewing needle and strong thread. The smaller ear pieces and some of the curves are best tackled with hand sewing. - Polyfill stuffing. - 2 black seed beads for eyes. - 50cm black embroidery thread or perle cotton for embroidering nose. Or you could use a bead or tiny pompom instead. - Embroidery needle for embroidering nose. - Optional ribbon for bow. What you do: Print out the pattern sheet and cut out the pieces (click on the image below to view full size image, then right click and save as a file, then print it). On the head piece, mark the nose because it helps! All pattern pieces include a 0.5 centimetre seam allowance. From fabric 1, cut one belly piece. Fold remainder of fabric in half and cut two head pieces (that are a mirror image of each other) and four ears. From fabric 2, cut 2 back pieces (again, that are a mirror image of each other). *Important note - if using fur fabric or towelling, be sure to cut the piece with the nap (pile). For more information about this, read this. With right sides facing stitch ear pieces together (because these are so tiny, it's best to hand sew these with backstitch). Carefully clip seams, turn and press. Pinch a pleat in the ears as shown, and securing with a few stitches. Place ears on body pieces about halfway up edge with pleats facing upwards. Baste securely. Place one head piece and one body piece right sides together, and stitch, making sure you catch that ear in nice and tight. Give it a very light press from the back (if using fur, pressing will flatten the pile, but you can brush it up again with your fingers.) Do the same with the other head and body piece to give you a mirror image. Ta-daa! Now, place the two piece together and pin. If using fur, comb it as best you can away from the edge so you don't sew too much of it in the seam (see the above link again for tips on how to sew fur). Stitch from the back end all the way to the tip of the nose. Clip carefully, and turn out, and carefully comb out any fur that may have been caught in the seam. Time to sew on the belly! Remembering that the pointy end of the belly piece meets the nose, place body and belly pieces with the wrong sides together, pin and stitch, leaving a gap open at the rear end (about a half inch either side of the back seam) so she can be stuffed. You may wish to hand-sew the tricky bits around the nose (although I had no trouble; it doesn't have to be absolutely perfect - embroidering the nose will help hide any minor hiccups!) Again, clip seams and carefully turn out. Stuff firmly with polyfill, paying special attention to the nose, (something long, thin and blunt will help here too) and the face area in general. Shape your hedgehog gently in your hands to flatten the bottom so she doesn't roll about too much. When you're happy with your stuffing job, it's time to sew her up. The belly piece left open at the back can get a bit flappy, so take your needle and thread and hand-gather along the seam line, and pull gently on the thread, drawing up the fabric until the belly and back opening edges are a pretty good match in size. Turn in edges of the belly and back pieces and sew the seam shut with a close ladder stitch. For the face, thread up your embroidery needle with your black embroidery thread. Tie a knot in the loose end. Enter your needle through the tip of the nose and out through the face into the position of where you want the first eye to be sewn. Thread the first bead on and slide it down the thread, then the needle re-enters the head at the point of the first eye position and exits on the other side in the second eye position. (Tip! If you place the eyes to close together, your hedgehog will look more like a hairy rat. Things look cuter and more gormless when their eyes are place further away from each other. That's not to say hedgehogs are gormless, but they definitely aren't shifty looking either, even though they may well be sneaky creatures). Thread the second bead on and slide it down the thread. Pass the needle through the head again back to the other eye and through it's hole again, pulling the thread slightly to indent the eyes. Pass the needle back and forth a few times between the eyes, making sure they are secure. When you're finished with the eyes, bring the needle back out through the nose. Cut the tail hanging from the nose (but leave the knot!) To make the nose, embroider a few very small satin stitches around the knot left on the nose. When you're happy with her nose, cut the thread and you're done! You can then fancy her up with a cute little bow if you like, or embellish her in any other way you might think of. She would make a lovely wrist-band type of pincushion if you sewed her to a band of elastic to fit your wrist, making her look like she's taking a stroll up your arm. Oh, and don't forget to stick some pins in her bottom. Although she's very handy as a pin cushion in mini-size, you could try enlarging the pattern and making a larger hedgehog as a toy or a decorative cushion for a child's (or adult's) bed. Not as handy, nor mini, but she would still look very cute. Awwwww. I'm sorry I called you gormless.

I made the pattern for the back side of the chatelaine. It has two sections which I had added to my current chatelaine and I love for non-sewing items... I keep my MP3 player in one and business cards in the other. I plan to add a small zippered pocket also on one side for my needle threaders. I also made patterns for the outside front pocket and the needle pad. And I did a template of the actual size of the front pocket to use as a guide for the motifs. I used the template as a guide to baste the outline of the pocket on a 10" square of fabric I could put on a hoop... Then I started auditioning bit of lace to use as a base for a fan. It's an awkward shape to put a fan on but there will be a fancy button on the left which pivots the needle pad and I can add a charm or two on the other corner. I will do the motif BEFORE I assemble the pocket to allow me room for error. There will be a floral motif on this pocket and I'm choosing a piece of lace to act as a base... My favorite is the filigree upper left but it's too fragile.
