The "Classic" Pincushion is one of my favorites. The design is simply "classic". They are so easy to embellish it and make the design yours. You can create as many sections as you need. They never tip over and are small enough to add to your travel bag. You can use just about any fabric. Because they take so little fabric, you can make use of your larger scraps. They make ideal gifts! Here are a few variations of the Classic... Here are the materials you will need... You will need a scissors, a compass or some type of circle template such as a cereal bowl or small plate. You will need paper to create a pattern, sewing thread and a thick, strong thread for creating the sections. I use embroidery perle cotton size 5. You will need a sharps needle and a needle with an eye big enough to accommodate your thicker thread. You will also need some fiberfill to stuff your cushion. You can also use emery to make a heavy cushion that sharpens your pins and needles. Last but not least, 2 buttons and fabric to create your pincushion. Some great choices are linen, wool, (I used recycled wool from blazers), felted wool, velvet, (to make a gift cushion) or any heavy cotton, such as cotton canvas or cotton duck. You can make the top and bottom coordinating or use one fabric for the top and bottom. Your choice. Begin by creating your pattern. Your finished cushion will be about 30% smaller than your pattern. My pattern is 5 5/8 inches across and my finished pincushion is 3 1/2 inches across. Lay your fabrics out, pin on the pattern and cut. Before you put things together, I recommend that you stay stitch around the edges of your fabrics. I do this with all my pincushions to give them stability and to keep the edges from fraying. The stay stitches make great guides when you close up the opening later. Sew as close to the edges as you can. Pin the front to the back, right sides together. You will need to leave about 2 inches open so you can turn the cushion right sides out. I like to mark the opening with 2 pins so I don't get carried away and sew it closed. Trim your seam allowances up to the stay stitching. Turn your piece right sides out. Finger press the seams open. Then stuff. Use a lot of small bits to stuff your cushion. Push the stuffing up against the inner seams. You want the stuffing to be very full but not too firm. Sew the opening closed. To create a smooth seam use a classic whip stitch. Pick up just a few threads of fabric from each side and gently pull the seam closed. Repeat until your opening is closed. Create a small, inconspicuous knot and hide the end of your thread inside the pincushion. TIP: If you find your hand sewed edges to be flat or uneven, try basting each edge over before stitching closed. I used a black, contrasting thread for this tutorial. First fold the edge over about 1/4". Be sure to follow the stay stitched line. This will give you a nice, rounded seam. It only takes a few minutes and you will find the time well spent when you see how perfect your seams come out. It only took me 30 years to figure out this simple fix. Now its time to create the sections. First, cut a long length of perle cotton. I like to audition the correct length of thread. Wrap the thread around your cushion 4-8 times (each full wrap is determined by how many sections you will be making). Add another 7 inches for sewing on the buttons and knotting. Once you have the right length, double it and cut. This gives you the perfect amount of thread every time. Thread your cotton onto a large eye needle. Long, millinery needles work really well. You want your thread to be doubled. Knot the ends together. Find the exact center of your pincushion on each side and mark with a pencil or pen. If you are off center, your finished pincushion will have uneven sized sections, so take your time. I like to use the compass or fold your pattern in half 2 times. The intersecting fold lines will give you a half-way point to use as a guide. Sew a few stitches with your thread to create a firm anchor. Create each section by bringing the thread up from the middle, around the outer edge and then inserting the needle back into the center. Give the thread a firm tug to create the pillow effect. It may be difficult to work the needle through the center. I use a small pliers to grab onto the needle. That sure saves me from an aching wrist later. Repeat for each section. I created 6 sections for this pincushion. I have used 4 sections on the peach sherbert cashmere version and 8 sections for the linen pincushion with leather buttons. Once you have your sections complete, tie off your thread. To keep the knots hidden, simply wrap your thread around one of the section threads once, then pull the wrap towards the center of the pincushion. Then poke the needle down through the center and back up again. Repeat. This will give your threads a nice tight hold so your sections will not come apart later. Don't cut the extra off just yet. You'll need the extra thread to sew your buttons on. Now its time to decorate your pincushion with coordinating buttons. This a wonderful way to show off your vintage button collection. Actually, my button collection is nearly as ridiculous as my fabric stash! Yet, when designing a new pincushion, I can't resist a trip to the fabric or antique shop to find a new gem. Life is just too short to deny yourself a new button now and again. I usually audition a few choices before deciding on the perfect button for each cushion. Attaching the buttons onto your pincushion is a bit awkward. Just run the thread through the top button shank or holes and bring the thread to the back. Run your needle through the back button and bring the thread to the front. Repeat if you have enough thread or until all your button holes are filled. Tie off your thread using the same method you used to tie off the sections. Your pincushion is complete! Now think of how you can create a "Classic" that speaks to your muse! Make a few. You'll find them to be the perfect pincushion for all your projects!

Well here it is...a tutorial for one of my favorite techniques...Faux Cathedral Windows. This method is very different from the traditional method. It is done from beginning to end by machine and uses a fraction of the fabric needed when doing the traditional method. I also think that when done in the way I'm about to show you, the end product comes out more polished looking in a fraction of the time it would take to do this using the traditional method. It is a great method for beginners as it is a simple straightforward process yet engaging enough for the long quilter too. For this tutorial I'm going to show you how to make a pincushion like the one shown above. SUPPLIES (8) 2 1/2" squares in various prints for "foundations and windows" (8) 2 1/2" squares for "frames" Roxanne's Glue Baste-It (1) 4 1/2" square for pincushion back (2) 4 1/2" squares of fusible fleece (not pictured) Polyester Fiberfill (2) buttons (not pictured) STEP ONE Press your eight "frame" squares in half on the diagonal and press and then select four squares from the print pile for your "foundations" (Pic 1). Pic 1 STEP TWO Using your Roxanne's Glue Baste-It, apply small dots of glue to one foundation as shown in Pic 2. Pic 2 STEP THREE Place one pressed "frame" onto the foundation matching corners and press into place (Pic 3). Pay special attention to make sure all corners and points meet squarely. Pic 3 Repeat with the other half with another "frame" so that your unit now looks like Pic 4.  Pic 4 Repeat this step with the remaining three "frames" and "foundations". STEP FOUR Next sew 1/8" seam around all four glue basted units as shown in Pic 5.  Pic 5 STEP FIVE Arrange your four units as shown in Pic 6 and sew into a four-patch (Pic 7) and press. Pic 6 Pic 7 NOTE: To reduce bulk in the center of your four-patch, it is important to spin the seams (Pic 8). Pic 8 STEP SIX Apply dots of glue to three corners of each of the four remaining print squares (Pic 9). These will become your "windows".  Pic 9 Next, place the "windows" atop each side of your four-patch unit, making sure their edges are 1/8" inch from the folded edge of the "frames"(Pic 10). Press each "window" in place. Pic 10 STEP SEVEN Trim away the fabric hanging off the edge (Pic 11).  Pic 11 Then apply a few glue dots to the trimmed edge (Pic 12) and press. Pic 12 STEP EIGHT Apply several glue dots to the edge of the left "frame" of one "window" (Pic 13).  Pic 13 Turn over the edge and press in place so that the outer end of the curve starts/stops 1/4" from the outer edge of your four-patch unit (Pic 14). Pic 14 The inner end of the curve should just meet the center of the four-patch unit (Pic 15).  Pic 15 Repeat this process for the other three "windows". It should now look like Pic 15. STEP NINE Repeat the process from Step Eight for the right side of each "window". Make sure to overlap the left curve when pressing down the right curve so that it leave no raw edge exposed (Pic 16). Pic 16 STEP TEN Using the thread color of your choice (matching or not), straight stitch down the edge of each frame as shown in Pic 17. Be sure to sew to the ends of each point to permanently secure them.  Pic 17 It should now look like this (Pic 18).  Pic 18 STEP ELEVEN  Next, iron the two 4 1/2" fusible fleece squares to the wrong side of the 4 1/2" backing square and the finished Cathedral Window unit. Pic 19  With right sides together sew a 1/4" seam all the way around leave a 2" opening on one side and trim the corners (Pic 20). Turn right side out. Pic 20 NOTE: Be sure to backstitch and the beginning and end of this seam. STEP TWELVE Lastly, stuff your pincushion and sew it closed (Pic 21).  Pic 21 Add buttons if desired and you're done! Front and back views As you can see this is a quick and easy method for doing Cathedral Windows. The windows are easily adjustable to any size...just like my large Cathedral Window Pillows which used 8 1/2" squares to make a 16" pillow. One thing to note about how I made these pillows. Instead of using 8 1/2" squares in the windows and having a bunch of waste trimmed off, I cut one 16 1/2" square (the measurement of one side of the Cathedral Window unit) and then cut it on the diagonal twice to create the four windows. This rule would hold true with a unit size. I encourage you to play around with your color placements to. Be it coordinated or scrappy it doesn't matter. Go wild! Last thing to note about this technique, for a symmetrical finish you need to work in multiples of Cathedral Window units (aka four-patch units). Otherwise you'll have one edge of your project looking one way and the other looking completeley different. You can put those four-patch units together creating the "X" like I showed you or you can turn them one quarter turn and create a diamond with the lines created by the folds. Either way works. And don't forget to continue spinning your seams throughout. I hope y'all have found this tutorial useful. Hello Stitchers! I have a scrappy secret, but I think it's one that a lot of us share—a lot of times when I need a little snippet of fabric, when I *should* reach for my scrap basket—I pull a brand new piece of fabric off the shelf instead. Shhhh—I won't tell! However, I am trying to break that habit, and hope that I might help inspire you to do the same! I challenged myself to make something using ONLY scraps from previous projects, and I came up with these super scrappy pinnies! I've written up a tutorial so you can make some, too! Let's get stitching! Herringbone Pincushion Tutorial Materials (2) Muslin, cotton voile, or solid quilting cotton rectangles for foundation piecing 2-1/2" x 7-1/2" (1) Backing fabric (linen or quilting cotton) 4-1/2" x 7-1/2" Lots of quilting cotton scraps 1/2" to 3/4" wide x 4-1/2" long (4) Quilting cotton scraps 1-1/2" to 2" wide x 4" long for ends (2) 100% Cotton quilt batting 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" Machine piecing and quilting thread or other 100% cotton thread Crushed walnut shells (affiliate link) or other weighted pincushion fill Hand quilting thread to finish the pincushion Tools Sewing machine, cutting mat, rotary cutter, quilting ruler, erasable fabric pen, iron and ironing board, chopstick or other tool for turning corners, hand sewing needle, small funnel, spoon Terms Right side: the side of the fabric with the design printed on it RST: Right sides together Instructions 1. Place the foundation piecing rectangles side by side as shown. Using a quilting ruler and pencil or erasable fabric pen, draw a 30 degree line on the left-hand piece, and a 30 degree line going the opposite direction on the right-hand piece, somewhere around the middle. The lines do not need to line up since we’re keeping this scrappy! 2. Place a quilting cotton strip along one of the lines, right side up. Place another quilting cotton strip RST on top of the first strip, matching the long sides along the line. The ends should overhang the sides of the foundation rectangle. Sew the strips together with a 1/8” seam allowance. Press the top strip open. If your machine doesn’t like sewing such a narrow seam allowance, then use one that is slightly wider—we don’t want those pieces pulling apart! 3. Continue adding strips in this way until you have covered the end of the foundation material, then sew strips to the other side of your first strip to finish it. Use wide strips for the last corners of the patchwork, mine are about 2”—remember that you will lose a bit of fabric in the seam allowances so it’s okay if they’re a bit wider than the other strips. A few tips: * It helps to do a few stitches beyond the sides of the foundation material, you’ll get a cleaner fold when you press the strips open. Backstitch right on the edges of the foundation rectangle. * I did not repeat very many fabrics because I didn’t want to accidentally have the same fabrics next to each other! * I mixed up the widths between 1/2" and 3/4” for an extra scrappy look. 4. Turn over the patchwork panels and trim to the original 2-1/2” x 7-1/2” size. 5. Place the two patchwork panels RST and sew them together along one long edge with a 1/4" seam allowance, backstitching on both ends of the seam. Open up the panel and press the seam allowance open. 6. Place the patchwork panel on a piece of batting and press*. Secure with a couple of pins if necessary. With your quilting ruler and erasable fabric pen, draw quilt lines following the herringbone pattern, spaced 1/2” apart or as desired. Quilt the panel. I used a walking foot and a stitch length of 3.0, with cream colored thread. 7. Place your linen or print backing fabric on a piece of batting and secure with pins if necessary*. Quilt as desired. Trim and square the quilted pieces, making sure they are the same size. * I do not use backing fabric underneath the quilt batting—omitting it helps reduce the bulkiness of the seam allowances. 8. Place the top and bottom pincushion pieces RST, secure with pins, and sew around the outer edge with a 1/4" seam allowance, leaving a 2” space on one long side for turning and stuffing. 9. Trim the corners and turn right side out. Press with an iron, making sure the unsewn edges are turned under neatly. 10. Fill the pincushion with crushed walnut shells or other weighted fill. I used a homemade cardstock funnel and a spoon. Leave just a little bit of space for the fill to move around. Sew the hole closed with little ladder stitches (you can see a photo of this in Step 3 of the Finish section of my house ornament tutorial). And a little scrap storage tip: I have tried a few different ways of storing my scraps but my current favorite method is to keep scraps of all the same color, regardless of size, in a zip closure plastic bag. It makes finding the perfect prints for these monochromatic projects so easy! I keep all of the bags on a little cart that I bought at the craft store. What's your favorite way to store scraps?
