I am crazy about Halloween costumes. I also quite enjoy themed costumes for Halloween. This year we went with costumes that are based on book characters. Our family LOVES the Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems. Have you read those books? Oh my word, they are amazing, hilarious, and all together quite fantastic. We have almost all of them, and we read them all the time. All. The. Time. So it was a no brainer on our Halloween O' Book Characters to dress the youngest two as Gerald the Elephant and Piggie for this Halloween. Another reason it seemed destined to dress them as Elephant and Piggie is because Gerald, the Elephant, wears glasses and Little wears glasses. It was meant to be. For both of the costumes I started with Butterick Pattern 3238. I used micro fleece. I altered the tail, the ears, and omitted the elastic in both costumes. The tails and ears are both made to mimic the book characters themselves. I followed then construction instructions I just changed the shapes. The were a few components not made from the pattern. For Gerald, I added the toenails in a lighter fleece. I cut 3 half circles for each "leg". That was 12 total. Then I sewed them on to the edge of the sleeves and the end of the splats (shoe covers). I also made a simple trunk by sewing a tube, filling it with batting and then attaching it to a piece of fleece. Then I sewed elastic to the ends of the fleece.. For sweet little Piggie, I only added a cute but ridiculously large piggy snout. I sewed to black felt slits to the front of an oval piece of fleece. Then I attached a piece of elastic. Did I mention anything about the cuteness? Elephant and Piggie are a pretty good start to our Halloween O' Book Characters. And now it's time for tons more DIY Halloween costume inspiration! Gerald is careful. Piggie is not. Piggie cannot help smiling. Gerald can. Gerald worries so that Piggie does not have to. Gerald and Piggie are best friends. In I Am Invited to a Party! Piggie is invited to her first party. She doesn't know what to wear, though, so she asks her best friend Elephant for help. Elephant's advice is odd to say the least, so Piggie will try on all sorts of zany outfits before finally arriving at the party for a hilarious surprise.

One of the projects that I worked on during this Christmas break was some Gerald and Piggie dolls/figurines for my son. He is a HUGE Mo Willems fan (he even had a Piggie and Gerald themed birthday party this year: read about it here and here.) If you don't know who Piggie and Gerald are then go to the library!! The Piggie and Elephant Books by Mo Willems are my son's absolute favorite. He has read every book about 30 times each. So I thought that some little cute figurines to act out their adventures would be a great idea for him. Here is what I came up with... They are made entirely from my own pattern, (really proud of myself, this is my first). I am going to make another set to sell on Etsy, hopefully it goes faster than this trail and error first set I made. I might even sell the pattern after a few more sets (need to make sure that the pattern makes sense.) The dolls are crocheted with felt eyes (and mouth for Piggie). I embroidered Gerald's glasses and mouth and Piggie's snout and eyebrows. If you are interested I have a pair listed on Esty, you can click here.

We're hosting an Elephant & Piggie party, so we're sharing how we make these cute paper party lanterns for a darling decoration!
My coworker, Jen, and I hosted an auction event at school this afternoon- an Elephant and Piggie Party! Mo Willems, who writes many fantastic books, has a series for young readers that the kids in our class absolutely adore, called Elephant and Piggie. We began by reading Should I Share My Ice Cream... ... and then we ate ice cream sundaes. Then, we made Gerald and Piggie hand puppets from paper bags. (I will scan and attach these templates as PDF's once I figure out how to do that, for anyone who might want to reproduce them...) After, we read Are You Ready to Play Outside? And then we played some games outside! We came back in and read I Will Surprise My Friend! And then we made surprise flower bouquets to give to a friend. To end the afternoon, we read We Are in a Book! and then gave the children a banana to take home. Seems random, I know- if you want to know about the banana, read We Are in a Book! It's hilarious. We had a great time, and we think the kids did too!

Halloween is only a few days away. Do you have your costume yet? If not, I have a super fun (and cheap) cardboard costume that you can whip up to wear this Wednesday. Today we're making Elephant and Piggie Costumes! How to Make Easy Elephant and Piggie Costumes (for practically nothing!) This post contains affiliate links. This means I make a small portion off of any purchases made through the links at no additional cost to you. Thank you for the grocery money! For my full disclosure policy, click here. This year Halloween kinda snuck up on me and I wanted to make easy costumes that wouldn't cost very much or be very difficult to make. So my husband and I decided to be Elephant and Piggie. (If you haven't heard of them, they're the main 2 characters in Mo Willems' Elephant and Piggie Books. Both of my sons LOVE the series. They're sweet, easy-to-read, and hilarious.) If you love these books too, I highly recommend these costumes. Materials Needed: To make elephant and piggie costumes, you'll need Grey and pink shirts Cereal boxes Pink, black, and grey craft paint Sharpie markers Paint Brushes Stapler Duct Tape Scissors Coffee stirrer/popsicle stick Let's Make Elephant and Piggie Costumes! 1. First, sketch out your faces and word bubbles onto a sheet of paper. Cut those out and make sure they look big enough on your head. (I have a pretty big head, so I had to make my piggie face particularly large.) 2. Trace your designs onto cereal boxes. Also, cut out two long strips of cereal box cardboard to be your headband. (Staple the strips together to make headbands that wrap around your head.) 3. Paint your cardboard! (Use Sharpies to add details once your paint is dry.) 4. Staple your headband. 5. Attach your word bubble to your face. Use a stirrer to help make sure the word bubble doesn't topple over. 6. Staple your elephant and pigge faces onto your headbands. Then, use duct tape to further secure them in place. And that's it! Wear your headpieces with pride and a pink or grey shirt! Looking for more last-minute DIY Halloween costumes?
