At last I can show you this piece! I worked on it for months this winter and entered it into the newest Dinner at Eight juried show, "Reflections." It was one of three pieces I made to this 24" x 60" size this year, and I sure got tired of that size and the long narrow orientation, but I was happy making this piece. For its statement I wrote a haiku: The moon is a mirror Without its own light, It reflects the sun's face. It is comprised almost entirely of triangles cut from my overdyed shirting fabrics. My quilt is one of 33 chosen for this exhibit and the list of artists is pretty great! I am so pleased to have my work included. The exhibit will debut at the International Quilt Festival in Houston in October. This is my fourth quilt that has been in one of the Dinner at Eight exhibits and they just keep getting better and better. Many thanks to Jamie Fingal and Leslie Jenison for curating these exhibits.
Someone asked me on Instagram how I go about putting together my applique quilts. So here's what I do! After I draw out my design and where I want the patches of different shades and colours to go on tracing paper, I scan it in, enlarge it in Photoshop and adjust the levels to make the lines as dark and visible as possible and to get out as much murk from the background. I then print it out over several pages and tape them together... Once taped I overlay the design with freezer paper, taped together with washi tape, magic tape or something that doesn't melt with heat. Then I trace over it with anything but a Frixion pen!! Once traced, I mark on the colours by name referring to my original photograph, and also mark joins with crosses and dashes to make it easier to match up later. But then I do a fabric pull and cut out some of the patches, a small section at a time. I usually get interrupted at this point... These get pressed onto the right side of fabrics and trimmed around leaving a seam allowance. Whilst sat on the sofa with a magazine on my knee, I then clip into some seam allowances (leaving the adjoining edge of the next patch), fold to the back and stick together. Once a patch is completely surrounded I can then take off the freezer paper which is my favourite bit! I keep building it up until its completed. Sometimes I stitch it down, other times I baste it and quilt it to hold the pieces in place. Still a long way to go but it's good fun. Thanks for following along with me this week! @pennydog Blog

this is made from cotton fabrics stitched onto muslin then with batting and a backing fabric. i then free motion stitched and quilted it. i finished this in Jan/Feb 2011
On Jan. 11th, my brother's first solo show opened at the LaConner Quilt Museum... 43 beaded quilts.... 10 years of work by Thom Atkins!!!! To say I am one totally proud sister is a drastic understatement. I took a few pictures with my little point-and-shoot camera. And then the battery went dead. No spare. Good news, however... my beadiferous-fiber friend, Sweetpea's Path, also attended the opening and took pictures with a more advanced camera. She posted them here. You can also visit Thom's website to see more. Better yet, get thee to LaConner. There is NO WAY that any camera can capture the awesome totality of these quilts, beautifully displayed on the museum walls, full size, up close and personal. The town is a fun, artsy town, with nice places to stay, eat and see. There's even a new quilt shop that just opened. The show closes on March 25, 2012. The above pictures are detail shots of Monterey Seascapes. Be sure to click to enlarge these images so you can see all the beady details. You can see the whole seascape on Thom's website, on this page. I think the way he used beads to construct the various underwater flora is utterly amazing. Most of the quilts in the show are for sale, although the prices aren't posted. There's a price list available in the Museum gift shop on the same floor as Thom's exhibit. I'm so pleased for him... two of the quilts, including the one shown above and below, Australian Dreamscape, sold during the artist's reception. Here is a picture of Thom working on Australian Dreamscape in my studio during a visit in July, 2004. And here's where you can read more about it. I bet you'll all be glad to know Thom's book on quilting with beads will be out this fall. I'll post a notice when it is available. The quilt below, which is one of my favorites, is on the cover. The title of the quilt is Tenuous Membrane and it's 25.5 x 43 inches. I love the colors and the harmony of lines! Here's a detail shot. It's not on his website yet. Another of my favorites is My Father's Shadow. Our biological father died in an automobile crash when Thom was 3 1/2 and I was just turning 5. I never thought of depicting our father in this way, but when I saw Thom's quilt I got a massive lump in my throat and a dense coating of goose bumps. It hit home, big time. Here's a detail. The grass is entirely beaded. Here's the page for it. They're all favorites... but one more for you, just a detail... Serenity lives up to it's name... lichen-covered rocks, with moss-covered bases, sit serenely in perfectly raked sand. This picture is just a detail, a teaser, because the whole is not yet on Thom's website. You'll have to go to LaConner to see it.

Small Art/Pictorial Quilts First Place was awarded to Not Quite 50 Shades of Gray, a monochromatic study done using commercial fabrics and raw edge appliqué, by Lynn Rogers. Not Quite 50 Shades of Gray by Lynn Rogers A Beautiful Surprise by Debbie Rogulich, earned second place for its improvisational pieced blocks. Batik fabrics, straight line quilting, and random row widths were also employed. A Beautiful Surprise by Debbie Rogulich Tent Rock Canyon by Laura Gilmartin was machine appliquéd and thread painted on a longarm. Tsukineko inks, couched yarns, and Intense pencils accented the third place award winner. Tent Rock Canyon by Laura Gilmartin Judge's choice went to Mary Mattimoe's original design, Backyard Turtle. Backyard Turtle by Mary Mattimoe Medium Art Quilts Set Fire to the Rain, the first place winner, is a beading phenomenon. Discharge dye, handprinted cotton sateen, lace, silk thread, glass and copper beads, hand reverse appliqué, and machine piecing were all incorporated. The piece is an original design by Nancy Steidle. Set Fire to the Rain by Nancy Steidle Wendy Garrison's original design, Tree of Life, received second place. It displays an unconventional trapunto technique topped with a layer of organza and embellished with beading and oil paints. Kamchatka by Nancy Steidle Materials used to create exquisite detail included cotton batiks, wool yarns, pearl cotton, silk ribbon, and glass beads. Kamchatka by Nancy Steidle Hand reverse applique, embroidery, beading, machine piecing, quilting, and felting techniques were employed. Kamchatka by Nancy Steidle Graces Jumping for Joy received second place. Barbara Bogart pieced the background and appliquéd the figures. 3 Grace Jumping for Joy by Barbara Bogart Third place went to my daughter's favorite piece in the show, My Three Bassets by Shari Schmitt. Photographs were used to create this original appliqué and pieced quilt. My Three Bassets by Shari Schmitt Quilted by Theresa Fetch Changing Seasons by Utha J. Russell received Judge's Choice. This original piece was quilted on a domestic machine and embellished with Shiva Paintstiks and thread painting. Changing Seasons by Utha J. Russell Large Art Quilts Gail Garber's textile expression of sudden changes in our warming world, Climate Change, took the top award in the Large Art category. Climate Change by Gail Garber Second Place went to Judith Roderick, Featured Artist of the 2015 Fiber Arts Fiesta, for Two Creatures. It consists of black silk and over-dyed handprinted silks with rich embellishment. Two Creatures by Judith Roderick Enchantment in the Jungle by Jean Brueggenjohann was the third place winner. It is a machine and paper pieced original work with hand appliqué, hand embroidery, glass beads, sequins, sparkly tulle and African fabric. It was quilted on a domestic machine by Jean. Enchantment in the Jungle by Jean Brueggenjohann Judge's Choice went to Purple Haze by Jean Grimes, a snow dyed and discharged cotton piece with crackle technique. Raw edge appliqué, silk fibers, beads, and glitter were added after quilting. Purple Haze by Jean Grimes Medium Pictorial Quilts Alpine Forget-Me-Nots by Annette Kennedy features fused appliqué, hand painting using transparent textile paints, and machine quilting. It's embellished with charms, ribbon, yarns and yo-yos. Do you write to do lists? I do - frequently. I even wrote one this morning for everything I have to do today - work, supermarket, packing for retreat, etc. Every six months I set goals for my quilting and embroidery. I find this helps me to keep on task, and get things finished. 30 June has been and gone, so it's time to check how I went against my quilting priorities set at the start of the year. The original list is here, but I promise to work through it without omitting anything. 1. Mediterranean Hexagons. This is a quilt I started at the workshop with Kaffe and Brandon at the end of January. It's progressing well and the top should definitely be finished before the end of 2016. I just purchased the backing for it the other day. I was tempting to use Kaffe on the back too, but decided to use black instead, and let the front do all the talking. 2. la passacaglia. I'm on the home straight. The hand quilting is almost finished, and I have the fabric for the binding. I really need to get it finished it within the next 4 weeks, because Quiltmania magazine are holding a la passacaglia exhibition at the International Quilt Festival in Houston. They will be showing 20 la passacaglia quilts and I hope mine might be one of them. I've already entered, but if it is accepted, I need to send it to USA about 18 August. So I'll be doing lots of hand quilting at our retreat this weekend. 3. My Small World. I finished it! I dedicated a couple of weeks in January to making this quilt, and it was finished in February. It's now hanging in the hall and I love it. 4. Possum Magic quilt. I've started the hand quilting with Aurifil 12wt, and it's looking lovely, but I put it aside to hand quilt la passacaglia first. 5. Women of the Bible quilt. No action - it's still sitting on the spare bed, probably because I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet. (whoever it was that wanted the pattern - please email directly, or include your email address in a comment.) 6. Spinning Stripes v2. I finished this one too. It now sits nicely with my first one. I'm not sure where I'll display them yet. 7. Oh! Christmas Tree. I've finished the top, and have the backing. I want to hand quilt this one too, but will finish la passacaglia first. 8. Smitten. I still haven't started this. I'm tempted to make it with Tula Pink Elizabeth fabrics, but i don't want to be the same as everyone else. 9. Trip around the World. I'm sort of going off this idea. I still like the photo in the book, but I have other things I want to make first. 10. Glitter. I'm still just admiring other people's version of this quilt. 11. Ballet avec Kaffe Fassett. This one may well be jumping up the list. A few members of the Millefiori / la passacaglia facebook group are making this quilt and I love how it looks. I bought a bag with this quilt on it. That counts as a small start. 12. Stack of Colour. I finished this one too! 13. Felt quilt. I haven't started this yet, but I do still think about it a lot. So, that's all 13 items that were on my list on 1 January. I've finished 3 of them, but also made some other things along the way. Here they are: 14. Honeycomb Spin. Finished. This was a class in April 2016 with Anna Hicks, and uses the Modern Hexies technique of gluing the hexagons onto the background. 15. Table mat. And a small table mat made with the left over hexagons. 16. Happy Villages. I made a small start on testing out this pattern. I haven't quilted it yet, but I do want to finish this piece before I try again. 17. I've also made a yellow mini quilt for the Aotearoa Quilters challenge. After seeing the green quilts in Auckland last year (click here to see them), I vowed to enter a quilt next time, whatever colour was chosen. My yellow mini isn't stunning, but it's a small start. I might even make another one yet before the challenge closes on 1 September. I'll post a photo after that date. a late addition 18. How could I forget my Sue Spargo blocks from #instastitchwithSue on Instagram. I'm enjoying making these free patterns each month and embellishing them with hand embroidery. There is an apocryphal but oh so true story that I have heard for years--probably you have heard it also. An artist is asked what she would do if she was given a million dollars. The answer of course is to keep making art until she ran out of money. Isn't that the way it goes. Always there is another quilt to make. Another show to prepare for. Next up is the Baltimore Craft Show February 23-25 at the Baltimore Convention Center. www.craftcouncil.org How I love this show. This is another large show with six hundred artists and lots of customers who are searching for an escape from winter. For me it is the first chance to define my work for the coming year. How can I create a body of work that carries on from what I have previously done, allows me take advantage of the insights from last year and reads as a cohesive whole. One friend noted that all of my square quilts reminded her of school bus windows. Interesting thought. Do I need to make more quilts that are other sizes? Another friend whose work I respect said she preferred my more abstract pieces. Hmmm. And of course there are all those who make comments about psychedelic colors. I hear these and put them in the back of my mind to gel. I look at other art to feed my soul and to help me see new possibilities. What inspires me. What am I trying to say. I sketch lots of quilts that will probably not get made just to see if I could make them. After all, I am not making quilts just to make quilts--I want to make quilts that have a purpose. Although it can be important to understand the technique until it becomes my language, technique is not the content of the quilts--at least not for me. I want to speak with the viewer. What am I trying to communicate. And I make lots of potholders and place mats as I think about it. There is no point in sitting idly by and fretting too much. That does not create art. Instead I sew and play with the fabrics. This year I have decided to feature my quilt "mountain sunrise". I love the colors and the joy of this piece. So happy and confident. Definitely it will be a focus. But my booth is large and there are 600 exhibitors at the Baltimore Show. Not large enough to be a showstopper but still it was a quilt I wanted to make in a shape that could look great over a sofa or bed.
