Picnic perfection, right here.
When it comes to picnics my philosophy is to have them as often as possible. Whether it's at the beach, your local park or just in your front yard, there is something so childlike and freeing about packing up a meal to be eaten while frolicking outdoors... On Sunday, I put together a light lunch to enjoy with V and my Mom on our lawn. I kept the spread super simple with garlic scape pesto, tomato and mozzarella sandwiches. I also laid out some fruits and vegetables for snacking. We picked our usual spot under the shade of the tulip tree, set-up the outdoor speakers, and sipped on a bottle of Riesling from the vineyard up the road. It was a lovely way to spend the afternoon before heading back to the city.

Oh, how I love a good pajama. Weekends in the winter are made to cozy up in bed with hot tea, watching movies, and reading magazines. Tilley-Gray wakes up at 5am (we are working on that) so a good robe and a pair of warm slippers have been key in adjusting to this new routine. We had plans to tailgate at a polo match Sunday afternoon. Days of work and gathering of supplies and most of Saturday cooking, and we were ready. We finished loading the car Sunday morning, intending to leave straight from church to tailgate and watch the match. Colette checked the field's information en route to church, only to discover that, due to the rain the previous day, the match was cancelled. Everything ready to go...and no place to go. Oh dear. After a flurry of flying text messages between Colette and her friends, and a little regrouping and research after church, Plan B became tailgating in an apple orchard. And an excellent plan it proved to be! Colette had the vision and did all the styling, and I did most of the cooking, and friends provided companionship and fun! I set up the cocktail table, while Colette readied everything else. Then our friends showed up and the fun began! Time for serious faces. And happy faces! Dinner time! - Menu - Adirondack Margaritas (recipe here) Roast Turkey Breast Thyme Roasted Apples and Onions (recipe here) Potato-Leek Gratin (recipe here) Sage Pumpkin Seed Bread (from a local bakery) Assorted Cheeses: Brie, Gruyere, Beecher's Marco Polo cheese, and Vermont Farmstead Pumpkinhead Ale Cheddar) Assorted Autumn Fruits Apple-Cranberry Upside Down Cake (recipe here) Lindt Chocolates Hot Apple Cider Since I'm endlessly fascinated with historical picnics, I've done quite a bit of research on the topic. In the past, a picnic was nothing more than a meal eaten outdoors. So, while our set-up might seem elaborate, it's really not much different than picnicking a century or more ago...in the day and age before paper plates, Solo cups, and plastic forks. If you'd like to recreate our tailgating party, here's a useful list of supplies: - folding table - wooden folding chairs - vintage wool blankets and comfy pillows - picnic baskets and hampers - silver trays, breadboards, and serving dishes - glassware, china, flatware - tablecloth and napkins - portable bar stand - something to make the table look pretty (pumpkins, wheat, flowers) And, yes, it was a lot of work. But we created some precious memories with dear friends and our family, and that's worth it all!

FacebookTweetPinYummly Autumn picnics are my absolute favorite. The temperatures are cooler, the colors are vibrant, and of course I’m all for cozy blankets and warm drinks! Picnics are a fun way to make dinner a little more festive and exciting, and today I’m sharing my quick tips on how to make this autumn tradition an easy success. 1. Pull out the Cozy Blankets Cooler temps mean some of my favorite things: pumpkin spice lattes, blanket scarves, and cuddling up under warm wool blankets! For our picnic, I used one of our plaid blankets as a makeshift tablecloth. I also have my eye set on this perfect picnic blanket from Pendleton – it’s nylon backed to keep picnics dry! Genius! 2. Serve Warm Cider There is really nothing better than sitting under fall foliage, sipping some hot mulled cider. I kept ours warm in vintage insulated bottles, and served it in moscow mule mugs. These containers would also be perfect for bringing along warm soup! 3. Keep the Menu Simple, Silly! Don’t over-complicate the menu! Some people shy away from picnics, because they get caught in the logistics of serving an unnecessarily fancy meal. My favorite picnic menu is baguettes, Boursin cheese, lunch meats and cheeses for simple sandwiches everyone can make themselves. Add a veggie and/or fruit platter from the store, and you’re good to go! 4. A Walk in the Leaves Remember to savor and enjoy the experience. We loved taking some extra time to play with Charlotte in the fallen leaves, enjoying the autumn colors and soaking in the season. FacebookTweetPinYummly

Hi All!! I have packed our little row boat full of cherry goodness for a fun outdoor dining experience! Since it is cherry season and boating season - I have combined the two for my Life is a Boat of Cherries - dining alfresco tablescape for our hop. Once again, Chloe Crabtree has assembled a wonderful group of talented table stylists for a week long hop of outdoor dining. All of the links to the blogs participating are listed at the bottom of my post. It is always fun to see what everyone has come up with and how creative the tables are. I hope you enjoy my little take on words with this one! Years ago I had purchased these faux picnic plates with cherries on them up in Michigan when we were on vacation. I have been meaning to do a table with them every summer and never did. Our dear neighbors, Patsy and Ron, had just recently given us this adorable little row boat - and the boat just happen to match my cherry dishes!!! Who would have thought- but that is the way my mind works! And after picking up some fresh cherries, it all fell into place. I had an extremely hard time with this, though, because the weather was just not cooperating!! I poured a lot of sweat into this - literally - I was sweating buckets setting this up in 93 degree temperatures with about 100% humidity. After checking the weather forecast I dragged all the stuff down the hill to the water and started setting up my boat - and with the sun still shining - down came the big huge rain drops! So I packed it all up, hauled it up the hill and waited for two days. I watched out my window as my little rowboat filled up with water. I finally got a beautiful day of sunshine and hauled it all back down the hill -and dumped out my boat, set it all back up again with new food. I should pack a picnic basket that nice when we really do eat out on the pontoon boat! But more trouble came when some of our other neighbors had guests over with a couple of dogs visiting as well. I am a dog lover - you have seen my dogs make a few appearances - but these dogs were running all over the place and I was so afraid they were going to eat my food sitting in the boat! It kind of reminded me of the the scene from A Christmas Story - when the Bumpuses dogs came over and stole the turkey! Plus I am sure they thought I was nuts for putting all this stuff in an old row boat and walking around it taking a million pictures - shooing away the dogs at the same time. It is hard to explain to someone just what you are doing and why!!! But we had fun with it - no dogs were harmed in the process, and they now know that the lady two doors down has a very odd hobby! I battled with sun and exposure issues as well. I baked these mini cherry pies and boxed them up with boxes and labels I made on my Silhouette, but I had a hard time getting a decent shot of those through the acetate window I put on the boxes. Oh well!! It was still a beautiful sunny day and I was doing what I love to do! A couple of bottles of Stewarts Black Cherry pop (yep, I am from Ohio!) are on ice for a nice cold beverage on a super hot day. See that ice in those polka dot glasses - faux ice - that's why it's not melted. After we (because my husband came down when he saw all the dogs) hauled it all back up the hill - we jumped in the lake!!! Oh, and if you are wondering why I didn't put the boat in the water - well - she is not sea worthy!! She is going to be filled with flowers and used in our landscaping!
