Earlier this week during an investor meeting, Elon Musk let it slip that Tesla would be releasing a pickup truck by year's end. Despite the fact it's nothing more than a rumor at this point, we're all for Tesla levels of torque and ride comfort in a vehicle perfect for the weekend warrior. This is

Rivian is a long-awaited and anticipated electric vehicle brand with R1T and R1S in its initial portfolio. It might have a long list of things to prove considering what Tesla just showcased taking the industry by storm with its very radical Cybertruck. Promising what the leading manufacturers aren’t able to still promise. The towing ability more than a Ford F-150, faster than a Porsche 911 Carrera and features like lightly armored body and glass panels. Rivian R1T and R1S, on the other hand, is a more conventional take on what might be the EV pickups and SUVs could be like. With loads of companies backing it with expertise and funding Rivian has boosted the expectations even more. For the year 2019 Rivian has been blessed with funding from Cox Automotive, Ford and Amazon. The 4th round of investment and injection of $1.3billion into the company, which was led by T.Rowe Price Associates. And this makes the Rivian even more promising, anticipatory and a well-awaited brand. The pickup and SUV that they showcased are going to be on sale in late 2020 and would start at $69,000 and $72,500 respectively. In comparison, Cybertruck’s single motor trim would start getting build by late 2021 and the triple motor variant? By early 2023. Yes! Tesla gets you your purchase that late. So, for now, Rivian does make a lot of sense being promised just around the corner. With such a cushion from industry leaders and business groups, Rivian is set to be a success story if not less. With CEO RJ Scaringe making a statement such as this, Rivian would ultimately beat Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. This is a big statement about the Teutonic trios which are in the process of developing and producing their own electric SUV platforms for the US car market. For now, the portfolio of all three manufacturers mildly includes all-electric SUV platforms. BMW has the i3 which is a hatchback, Audi has the E-Tron and Mercedes-Benz has the EQC, both of which are SUVs. Wading into their products the Rivian R1T and R1S, remember “T” with a pickup truck and “S” with an SUV. Both have a range in excess of 400+ miles and a wading depth of 1 meter. It has lockable storage bins and they can carry bulkiest of gear. The motor at each corner makes the vehicle use it for different purposes altogether. Rivian recently demonstrated through a tweet how the R1T does a tank-like 180-degree turn. So, the left set of wheels drives opposite to the right set of wheels and hence the car creates an imaginary pivot point in the center making it go round being stationary. How cool is that? The vehicle is designed around the adventure and exploration that people might go on. And if it does grueling things well, it does everything well with ease. “I started Rivian to deliver products that the world didn’t already have – to redefine expectations through the application of technology and innovation. Starting with a clean sheet, we have spent years developing the technology to deliver the ideal vehicle for active customers. This means having great driving dynamics on any surface on- or off-road, providing cargo solutions to easily store any type of gear, whether it’s a surfboard or a fishing rod and, very importantly, being capable of driving long distances on a single charge. From the inside out, Rivian has developed its vehicles with adventurers at the core of every design and engineering decision. The R1T and R1S are the result of all this work and we are excited to finally introduce these products to the world.” - RJ Scaringe, CEO, Rivian Chassis What elementarily lies beneath the vehicle is a skateboard platform. Try imagining a skateboard where the board is a flat pack of batteries with 4 wheels attached to the corners. Which is what the world is now looking at how an EV should be. And this might be what ladder frame chassis is to the internal combustion world. This helps the vehicle carry a very low center of gravity and centering the center of mass to the center vehicle is a boon, believe us! The handling and how the car rides over the road is helped by a great effect. And we still haven’t started talking about how the packaging is even more effectively, creating a whole load of space interior-wise. What chassis or the “skateboard” is sprung with is unequal length double wishbone suspension in front and a multi-link setup in the rear. The suspension is also capable of controlling the roll and also houses adaptive dampers with a further ability to adjust ride height thanks to the air suspension. What it does is carry you in utter comfort whether off-road, on-road or on the highway. Powertrain The R1T and R1S both carry quad motor format which is rated at 147kW and they are designed to work with minutest torque changes as required. This helps the vehicle have active torque vectoring and you obviously do without a Limited Slip Differential-Locked differential wizardry when you take them off-road. It makes it all very simple for itself at least, be it high-speed cornering and low-speed rock climbing. An astonishing 3500Nm of torque on each wheel making it overall have 14,000Nm of torque. Phew! Tesla Roadster, for example, has this rated at 10,000Nm and just for a good read the outgoing S65 AMG with last of V12 produces 1000Nm of torque. Rivian with that number is *gulp* moment. Though such kind of torque would destroy the last shred of rubber on the wheel so it is designed to not put out such a brutal power on the wheels and be rather calm for obvious reasons. The R1T and R1S can do a sprint of 0 to 100mph in less than 7 seconds. Which is a tad quicker than 991 911 Carrera’s time. Tesla, are you listening? What this powertrain actually helps is with the kind of load it can carry and pull. The towing capacity is rated at 11,000 pounds. “The beauty and elegance of our quad-motor setup isn’t just about brute power; this architecture provides instantaneous torque with extremely precise control at each wheel, which is completely game-changing from a dynamics perspective, both on- and off-road,” said Executive Director of Engineering and Programs Mark Vinnels. Battery The energy-dense battery module was designed with a thought of it being able to take on the harshest of the environment. To start with it has a tough underbody which protects it from the rocky environment. It has an advanced cooling system that helps the battery carry optimum temperature be it any temperature condition, terrain. Further, the vehicle optimizes its driveability learning from the driver behavior and hence maximizing the last of juices out of the battery. This would also help battery have longevity and its reusability. There are three battery sizes planned which would range from 105 kWh which would be available 6 months after the launch of the initial 180 kWh and 135 kWh. A DC fast-charging capability of the battery up to 160kW, which takes 30 minutes and enhances the range of the vehicle by 200 miles. There’s an 11kW onboard charger which helps in rapid charging at a level 2 charger. It includes 8 airbags and reinforcement in the skateboard platform which would also help to protect the battery. It will also be offered with an array of active safety systems aided by an array of self-driving sensors. And in comparison, Tesla Cybertruck hasn’t revealed any of the safety ratings as such. In fact, the hard body shell would work against the absorption of any of the external forces. Self-Driving Capabilities This is the feature Tesla excels at and this is something very hard to coin right. But yes, Rivian has been developing this well. For starters, it includes a camera, lidar, radar, ultrasonic and high precision GPS coupled with high definition maps. It has an ability to go Level 3 that is going “hands-off-wheel and eyes-off-road” on the highway.
