Élevé à Gilly en Belgique, il sillonna sa patrie avant de quitter ses frontières, afin de saisir les paysages et les peuples d’Europe, en suivant les techniques du style pictorialiste. Les photographies pictorialistes, caractérisées par leurs scènes douces aux effets picturaux, étaient obtenues à partir de traitements inhabituels faisant usage de substances telles que l’huile ou la gomme bichromatée.
