Some of these sounds are tricky because they are irregular. Others are tricky because we haven’t YET learned the phonics/spelling rules for those sounds. Those are temporary heart words. But what do you do if you need to teach or assess with books in a balanced literacy program (like Fountas & Pinnell)? How do you balance both? Start with HEART WORDS! It’s time to ditch the lists of memorized sight words and use an approach based on the Science of Reading. (If you still need to follow those sight word lists, I've got you covered!) ***Here's what you get: >>>6 files<<< (4 PDFs and 2 PowerPoints for the editable files; 2 of them come in a zipped file.) 1 & 2) 362 High-Frequency Heart Words (Parts 1 & 2) 362 high frequency words are available with heart sounds and without. This set of words includes irregular words and words that are temporarily irregular. They can be used with any phonics or reading program. FAQ What is the heart word method? The heart word method of teaching high frequency words teaches students how to read sight words phonetically rather than memorize them. The strategy of memorization has been found to be ineffective in many cases. The heart word method teaches students how to decode words while drawing attention to irregular or untaught sounds using a heart. The heart is a reminder that this part of the word is tricky and must be remembered by heart. Why do some phonetically regular sounds have a heart on top? The heart is used for both irregular sounds and UNTAUGHT sounds that are unfamiliar to students. The heart is used to remind students that this is the component of the word that they must ‘remember by heart’. The regular sounds that are hearted are those that students most commonly will not know at their current level of learning.
