The fifth phase of excavations at Keezhadi is set to begin on June 12. The excavation team will be looking for structures beneath the surface, aided by information provided by the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) and Bharathidasan University. The government has sanctioned funds for the fifth phase of excavations [Credit: The Hindu] The State Archaeological Department, which took over the excavations from the Archaeological Survey of India, has tied up with IIG, a technical agency. “IIG is based in Mumbai and they came all the way to Keezhadi. They did a survey for 10 days and have given us a preliminary report [detailing] where exactly structures would be available underneath the surface,” an official in the department told The Hindu. “The government has sanctioned ₹55 lakh for this phase of excavations. This phase will be undertaken for a period of one year. A team of 10 archaeologists will undertake the excavations; it will be led by Dr. Sivanandam,” Minister for Tamil Culture K. Pandiarajan said. According to the official, the survey would look for structures underneath the surface, which would be indicated as anomalies in the report. “They have zeroed-in on a few places, based on which we are locating the places to dig. This time, we expect some major structures to be revealed (during the excavations),” the official said. “What lies beneath, we will get in a 3D view. These will not be exact pictures, but we will get a graphical representation of anomalies. We are also tying up with Bharathidasan University to undertake a ground-penetrating radar survey,” the official said. According to the official, the ASI had selectively used magnetometers during excavations earlier. “These magnetometers have also been used in Angkor Wat and other places. These two organisations came in handy for us this time to identify the locations,” the official said. Meanwhile, archaeologists have also found evidence of Keezhadi being part of a possible cluster of places. A burial site very near to Keezhadi, at a place called Konthagai, seems to be part of the cluster. “Manalur and Agaram could be part of the Keezhadi cluster as well,” the official said, adding that the next phase of excavations could be in these areas. In the previous phase of excavations in 2017-18, the team found various antiquities, including terracotta artefacts and copper, gold, iron and ivory objects, including an ivory dice. A total of 5,820 antiquities were found. The team also found an animal bone, which will be sent to the Centre for Microbiology in Hyderabad for testing. A detailed report on it is expected soon. Skeletal remains of a child were excavated from Konthagai village, part of the sixth phase of ongoing excavations in the ancient site of Keeladi, in Tamil Nadu. Credit: Tamil Nadu State Dept. of Archaeology The skeleton was found buried between two terracotta urns that were also found on the same day. It was 75 cm in height and was found 0.5 m below surface level. Excavations are currently taking place at Keeladi, Konthagai, Manalur and Agaram villages in Sivaganga district. Konthagai village, located around 2 km from Keeladi, is believed to be a burial site. Deputy Director of Archaeology and in-charge of the excavations R. Sivanandam said that when the team began excavating, they first found the mouth and the hand in the remains. The lid of the two urns were also exposed at the same time. “The rest of it followed soon,” he said. Mr. Sivanandam said that the gender of the skeletal remains will be determined in two days time. He added that the process of carbon dating needs to be completed to determine the age of the child. It cannot be revealed yet, he said. Two other skeletal remains of adults were found at Konthagai during this phase. A total of 15 urns have been found to date. A gold coin that is said to have been used extensively in the 17th century AD, some shells and pots, have also been found during the excavation, in all four sites. Excavations by the joint Syrian-European Mission at Tell Beydar were carried out in 2010 at an accelerated pace despite the brevity of the season. The results were very satisfactory and confirmed the importance of the site, not only for the 3rd Millennium BC, but also for the Hellenistic period. The Hellenistic levels (c. 150-75 BC) at Tell Beydar were exposed in all the current excavation areas. In addition the recent excavations revealed that the three phases of occupation during that period correspond to various settlement patterns. With respect to the Jezirah IIIb period (2450-2340 BC), the plan of the Upper City has been largely exposed. The progressive extension of the excavation areas revealed the city plan at its peak, around 2400/2375 BC. The excavations were moved from the Acropolis to the Upper City, its Eastern Palace, its northwest district, its dwelling quarters, its large open public areas, its economic sectors and its workshops. Thus the 2010 campaign, like the former ones, should be considered of primary importance for the history of architecture and city planning.
