Since its first edition in 2014, Luftgekühlt has become the de facto template against which all other “elevated” car shows are judged. Accessible, laid back, and open-minded, it can be thought of as an antithesis to the stodgy concours circuit and the lazily strung-together “Luft” imitators alike. One-make events are nothing new, but just as Singer almost singlehandedly redefined the restomod paradigm and set a new reference point for all that followed in its wake, the guys behind Luft took a very simple idea—a car show featuring only air-cooled Porsches—and showed us what’s possible when attention is paid to the very last detail. Every sight line is composed down to the inch, every theme is simultaneously easy to spot and perfectly woven together into the overall mesh. Only something so particularly prepared can feel so naturally occurring. Even those that are totally indifferent to Porsches will find their attention thoroughly yanked around at Luftgekühlt. The eighth edition retread old ground (the fourth event was held at the same Port of Los Angeles warehouse/brewery),
These elegant French GTs were anachronisms in their own time, keeping elegance alive in post-war France.

This relatively small but very passionate niche market and their latent desires for more and better—more power, more style, better engineering, reliability, and packaging—was ripe for the picking. Enter Datsun, whose 1970 introduction of the now-classic 240Z simply revolutionized the American performance car marketplace. The dawn of the affordable, advanced, Japanese sports car had broken, and there was no turning back.
What is the template for a concours? Not any two are identical of course, but I think some base ingredients can be found in most of their recipes: they’re typically held in Europe, and it’d be a good bet to place them on the grounds of something built out of stone and hundreds of years ago. That being the typical setting for these posh car parties doesn’t diminish their splendor necessarily, but there does come a point where even the best meals leave you with an appetite wandering elsewhere if you’ve had enough in succession. The Bridge, in just its second year, proves that Pebble Beach and Amelia Island are not the only American offerings in this arena. Located in New York’s Hamptons, and held on the golf course of the same name, The Bridge is a young event but one that’s steeped in history already. Reason being that the evenly-clipped lawns that host these cars used to be the site of one of America’s earliest and most difficult tracks: Bridgehampton Race Circuit.

Michael and his wife made the decision to incoporate Michael's 1800S into their wedding photo shoot when they tied the knot in Boston last year. The Volvo 1800S has always been an integral part of their relationship and holds sentimental value to both of them; Michael drove one on their first date, and together they made a 1200-mile round-trip journey to acquire this current one.

I was generously loaned a stunning 1966 Mercedes-Benz 230SL by my friend Keith for the journey, which fit right in with the rest of the cars. I really couldn't have asked for a better way to run my first Copperstate. I was immediately in the thick of it, surrounded by classics valued well into the six (and sometimes seven) figure range, many of which could be shown at Pebble Beach and some that probably had been.

This low-mileage and original example has a storied past. The original UK owner shipped the car to Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, and drove it across each country. Later, the Gilbern encountered problems and sat in a garage in Perth for 30 years. A mechanic noticed the car, bought it, and fixed it up. Fellow Australian Neil Rote was the lucky guy who acquired it—without having seen or test-driven it.
For one man, restoration isn’t the answer to the ideal classic car experience
I could have named this article, “The power of jumpsuits,” but that would have sold this selection of outfits short. I’ve always been intrigued with the stark differences between how concept cars are treated around the world, with Italian supercars often partially covered by an attractive model, and early ’50s American concepts showing a glimpse of life that never quite happened. The first photo here, of the Alfa Romeo Carabo, is the most traditional, in a sense, of what to expect when a model is matched with a striking concept car. She gets to wear a futuristic jumpsuit, big hair, and visor tinted to match the car. Beside the Carabo is another Bertone concept, the Volvo Tundra, which also gets a glamorous model to match its lines. Further down, however, it’s clear that while different manufacturers, locations, and eras conspire to alter the modesty of the models in question, all strangely match their concept car quite well. Early General Motors promotional shots are some of my favorites,
