When I try to reply to you in anyway, my message is sent back to me, and marked as blocked. I am not ignoring you!! Please try your personal account so I can help you. Thank you. My muses and I have been working on this for a month now, creating at home and trying these in the classroom. Hopefully you can squish this in before you jump into fall themed activities. But you will need the Pete the Cat: The Wheels on the Bus book before you begin!! Back to the beginning... First, I simply read book to my class so they could enjoy it. We watched the accompanying video available on Teacher Tube: Pete the Cat Wheels on the Bus (Others are available on YouTube, if you can access those from your school server.) Next, I used the illustrations in the book to discuss positional words. Click on the image below to download the list of questions I used. Then we made this anchor chart of the terms! ******I explained that the bus is turned so that we were looking at its side and therefore the front and back area would look a little differently.************ After this I gave students a copy of a Pete and bus to color. We brought these to the carpet work with them demonstrating each positional term. Pete Manipulatives Bus Manipulatives Then we followed up on a different day with this cut and paste activity. Cut and Paste Positional Pete Finally, I gave students a reader using these terms as a culminating activity. It was perfect!! We are studying the word "is" and students could find it and highlight it in yellow. Pete's Bus I hope you can use and enjoy these. I am sharing because I was not able to find any positional word materials that were appropriate for the beginning of school.
I L.O.V.E. Pete the Cat! My firsties drool when I mention his name! My grandkids can't get enough. It's the only book they want me to read. If you haven't read a Pete the Cat book, you really need too. They are by Eric Litwin with darling illustrations by James Dean. If you click on each picture, it will link you to Amazon.com where you can learn more. Each book has it's own catchy rhyme and you'll find yourself singing it over and over through out the day. You can even download the song for each book. They also teach a great lesson which my 4 year old grandson repeats to himself when he's about to cry. "Did Pete cry? GOODNESS, NO! It's all good." I love it when kids connect to a book. I use the first book 'I Love My White Shoes', when I teach colors. Diane and Kelly over on Made for 1st Grade have a cute class book you can make for FREE. Mrs. Jump has a darling art project to go along with it over on her blog. I think she has a whole unit but I couldn't find it. Check it out HERE. My kiddos LOVE to watch the YouTube video. This is the author and the illustrator entertaining some kids with their book. My kids LOVE it! The 2nd book, 'Rocking in My School Shoes' is great for the beginning of the year where you can find all the places in the school. Also that SCHOOL IS COOL! I think I saw something to go along with this on the web some where but can't find it now. Does that ever happen to any of you? All the time here. The newest one,' Four Groovy Buttons' is great for teaching subtraction. I put together a little FREEBIE for it. This is how I'm going to introduce/review subtraction this year. I generally do it with cookies but I think the kids will really connect to Pete and his buttons. I love story mats. You can read another post about them HERE. So I made a story mat to go along with it. The kids have buttons and practice telling stories with the buttons. There is even a math station activity. Click HERE to Download Nikki over on Melonheadz did the darling graphics! I'd love to hear your ideas and how you use Pete the Cat in your room. I hope everyone has a terrific day. Remember: "Did Pete cry? GOODNESS NO! Buttons come and buttons go. It's all good!"

On of my favorite things to hear is children giggling. Even thinking about kids laughing and chuckling makes you smile, no?! An author study that I love to do in my classroom, that ALWAYS brings lots of giggles, is Mo Willems. Reading one of Mo Willems' books is entertaining no matter how old you are. {Sometimes I probably think the books are even more funny than my students do!} A few weeks ago I posted this picture on instagram. My class was having a little BIG issue with using the restroom correctly {YUCK}, so I went to the library and checked out this book. Who knew a book with the word "pee" in the title could work "Bathroom Miracles"!? :) Thank you Mr. Willems. Time to Pee! After reading the "Pee Book" {as it was referred to by my students} my kids were so excited to start our Mo Willems Author Study. We mastered many of our ELA standards, just by focusing on this one author. Mo Willems makes reading fun! Here are some of the activities that we did... We learned all about Mo Willems and examined what he does as an author and illustrator. As we worked through this unit we tried to be an author and illustrator just like him. We examined characters in Mo Willems' books and compared their adventures and problems in the stories. Of course one of our favorite characters was Knuffle Bunny! Pigeon was a big hit too! The kids loved changing their voices while they were reading to sound just like Pigeon. Probably one of the favorite characters that my students got to know was Wilbur from the book Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed. They were so creative when they got to dress their own Naked Mole Rat! Piggie and Elephant {my personal favorite Mo Willems' characters} were a huge hit! The students are still selecting these books for in their independent reading book baskets! If you don't have Mo Willems books in your classroom library...they are a MUST! I recommend purchasing hardcover ones, they will be read over and over again--getting lots of wear and tear! As we read Mo Willems books we discovered that as an author he uses his characters to teach us lessons. Even though we are done with this unit, my students still refer to books and characters that we read during our author study. I will randomly hear, "You should share like Piggie." or "I am a leader like Wilbur." Melts my heart! :) If you are interested in doing a Mo Willems Author Study, I recommend this unit to you... Included in the unit is all the chart parts, printables and crafts shown in this post! Click on the picture or HERE to go check it out! The best part of Mo Willems' books are the joy and fun that he brings to reading...something that is so important as we develop our students as "Reading Lovers"! Here is a little FREEBIE to help you celebrate this amazing author!

It's been a BUSY, BUSY school year and I apologize for completely neglecting my blog. I just finished putting together all my Leo Lionni goodies and I just had to share. Here's a peek at the finished product: I always make anchor charts for each of the stories we read. Here are a few: Once my students are familiar with Leo Lionni and his stories, then they are ready to tackle writing their own Leo Lionni story. I use the FREEBIE below for them to plan their story. Hiya Everyone! First of all, I'm having a gleeful moment of instant nostalgia. The Sound of Music is on and I feel like I'm 8 years old again, getting to stay up late on a school night to watch Maria twirl around and around on the top of a mountain. Love it! Now on to a great little freebie I have for you... If you're anything like me, taking a day off from school ties your stomach in knots. Sub plans to write, materials to prepare, checking the clock every ten minutes and wondering if everything's OK. It's usually easier just to go in, even if you're under the weather. Taking a day off during the first few weeks of school is even worse - how can your little guys can possibly get through the day without you there?!? Well, I faced the unthinkable on Friday. It was the 7th day of school and I needed to take a personal day - YIKES! My Dad was having surgery (which went VERY well - woohoo!) and I wanted to be at the hospital with my family. I debated for a while about whether I should take the day off, because my class is just settling in to routines and procedures and I felt a little bit like I was abandoning them during a really crucial time. To make things even more tricky, it was School Picture Day. After talking with my AP, we decided that picture day was manageable and the kids would be just fine without me for a day (imagine that). So I got to work creating very detailed sub plans that I thought would keep the kids busy, engaged and learning on their first day with a sub. I wanted to give the sub easy to follow plans, knowing that he/she would be not only facing the usual challenges of being a sub, but also tackling them with a class still relatively unfamiliar with each other and the routine. Enter everyone's favorite feline - Pete the Cat! I had just introduced my newest group of kinder kids to the first Pete book on Thursday, and as expected, they were in love. I figured that giving them a day full of Pete was the best way to keep them engaged and help the day moving along. I came up with lessons and follow up activities for reading, writing, word study, math and science and wrote detailed directions for the sub. I prepared all of the materials, left everything labelled and organized, and left school on Thursday feeling OK about abandoning leaving my sweet class in the hands of a well-prepared sub. The day's plans came out so well that I thought I would share them as a little gift from me and Pete to make your life a little easier. If you have a day off coming up or just want to prepare an emergency sub kit, everything you need is in the packet. Just grab a copy of the book, Pete the Cat - I Love My White Shoes, follow the directions for prepping the materials, and enjoy a stress-free day off! Download Your Freebie Here Have a great day off!
