MATERIALS REQUIRED -- Peg Dolls (click here for a list of shops where peg dolls may be purchased) -- Brown, black, white, yellow & blue wool felt scraps (note: paper may be used for embellishments when working with children as paper will be easier to cut) -- A tiny bit of brown wool roving or yarn (for beard) -- A small amount of black wool yarn for hair -- Watercolors plus black acrylic paint -- Beeswax polish (optional) -- PVA or other non-toxic white craft glue -- Paint brushes -- Scissors -- Pencil Step 1: Paint clothes -- I used black acrylic paint for the pilgrim clothing & brown watercolor paint for the Native American clothing. Step 2: Paint hair. Step 3: Paint faces (or draw with pencil). Use beeswax polish to brighten the paint of watercolored areas (optional). Step 4: For Native Americans, create headbands from tiny strips of wool felt. Braided hair may be glued across the head and anchored beneath the headband. Use tiny strips of white felt to create hat, shawl, apron and collar for Pilgrims. I added a needle felted beard to the man -- a bit of yarn or felt would work as well for creating a beard. (note: paper may be used for embellishments when working with children as the paper will be easier to cut) I hope these little turkeys, Pilgrims, Native Americans bring smiles & joy to your holiday table. P.S. Don't forget to have a look at my turkey tutorial, too...
Elf Babies - PDF felt pattern - instant download This is one of my older designs, cute Waldorf inspired dolls. These little Elves hang in a leaf, slowly rocking in the wind. The dolls and leaves are made of wool felt. The little heads are made of tube tricot and doll fabric and on the pattern, you will find an extended description of how to make these heads, with pictures to help you. If you don't have Hand dyed felt for the leaves, make it your self. So much fun to do with normal ecru felt and wet tissue paper in autumn colors. Wear gloves when doing so! The little Elves are 7 cm high. This pattern is, like all my other patterns in this shop, written in English. After you have finished your purchase, the Dutch text is also available. Nederlandse tekst na aankoop eveneens te downloaden.

But summer also came to an end. The sharp autumn wind whirled the brightly coloured leaves through the air and tugged at the root-children's clothes. "Hoo," called the wind, "hurry home, it's getting cold here. It's time to go to bed."...... And all the little root-children went down under the ground again to start their long winter's sleep. Sibylle von Olfers. The Story of the Root-Children. My friend Sonia made up this pattern in the year 2000 while sitting (sometimes lying) on her bed breastfeeding her son. He was a bit of a snuggler and didn't like her to leave when he fell asleep so she sat and hooked this pattern, pulling it ot a few times and trying something else. It is actually a very forgiving pattern and was one of the very first things I crocheted (back before I had even read a pattern or knew what the stitches were called). Sonia has graciously allowed me to share this pattern with you on the www - may it go forth and produce many babies. You will need: brown yarn (8ply), cream mohair yarn, skin coloured knit material (tricot, old tshirt..), 3inches of size 1 bandage, embroidery threads for eyes and mouth, stuffing wool, thin linen thread, sewing threads, wool needle, crochet hook (2.5mm or 3mm). Body~ Crochet the body using the brown yarn ~ (NB these are Australian crochet terms our double crochet is an American single crochet) chain 3 (loosely) and form into a ring. next row 5dc (double crochet) next row 7dc (increase in the 2nd and 4th stitches) then inc every third stitch three times until 9dc then inc every 5th stitch x3 (15dc) then inc every 7th stitch x3 (21dc) then inc every 9th stitch x3 (27dc) then 42 dc with increase next row decrease every 6th stitch x5 (30dc) then dec. every 3rd stitch x4 (12dc) (this brings you to the neck of the root baby which should be approx index finger width) make 2 dc then reverse direction and 8 dc reverse direction and inc. every 3rd stitch (1 2 3 45 6 7 8) reverse direction in inc. in 3rd and 7th stitches until 12 stitches wide reverse then dec. every 3rd stitch (9 stitches) reverse then dec in bold 1 23 4 56 7 89 (6 stitches) reverse, decrease 3 times (3 stitches) reverse then decrese the three remaining stitches together double stitch around the face edge, finish off. Head and Hair ~ I am going to make a wild assumption that you already know how to make a simple formed head (it is ok if you don't, they are simple and I will put a bunch of pictures at the end of this post to step you through: failing that there are loads of great tutorials on making heads - do some googling you will be fine). Ok so make a 2.5 -3inch simple formed head (eyeline only) with the size 1 bandage, linen thread and stuffing wool. Using you choice of skin material cover the head and embroider small eyes and a mouth. Bringing it together ~ Stuff the bodysuit with fluffed out wool til it is firm but not hard; remember to leave room for your baby's head. Pop the head in and sew it securely into the body suit; gather suit around the neck and hide your ends. With the cream mohair yarn sew loops around the face, then cut the loops open. All done, sing a little lullaby and put that baby to bed. The giveaway bit ~ Ok hands up who can't crochet or just dosen't even want to try; 'tis ok I used to throw little crochet tantrums and fling my hook on the floor. Lucky for you I made a couple of extra babies. If you would like to put your name in the hat, leave a comment to that effect and I will make sure your name goes in. I'll get my big girl to pull one out next Wednesday...sometime... probably early evening my time. We don't mind where you live but you need to make sure I can contact you. Ok basic how to make a head pictures now follow ~ (don't ever let a child watch you make a head, it is brutal)

So, this Christmas, I jumped on the peg doll band wagon... and I loved it! I made a collection of Saints and a Mass set for my Goddaughter and her siblings, and made my niece a nativity (post here). While I think that the best way to build up a collection of peg dolls is to do an exchange (you make 10 or 20 of the same doll, then exchange with 10 or 20 other people who did the same thing= collection of many and you only had to learn how to paint one!) or to use Catholic Icing's printable peg dolls (=amazing), I really really enjoyed getting to make these one by one for kiddos I care about. So, a forewarning, this post is much less of a how to and more of a "look at this! I love how it turned out!" post. :) I made each kid in this family two Saints to play with (and share!) based on their first and middle names. Here are the ladies: From L-R= Lydia, Anne, Mother Teresa, and the BVM. And the gentlemen: From L-R= Benedict, Mark, James, Fulton Sheen, Peter, and Joseph. I tried to use colors and symbols that matched the Saint's lives. You know, always a chance to catechize. :) Like the little chalkboard with a JMJ (Jesus, Mary, Joseph) with Fulton Sheen! And I made little vestments and altar cloths for all the liturgical seasons... And used a little box for the altar, and made candlesticks, a lectionary/prayer book, a chalice, a paten, and a sanctuary lamp. Then I used a wooden box to make the inside of a church! On this front view, I used the side and lid depth to give the impression of a high altar and added tabernacle doors. I also painted some navy and gold arches and mod podged on a Mary and Joseph statue (cut out from a catalogue). The crucifix in the center is actually wood and metal and is hot glued to the front. I also painted in some simple stained glass windows on the left and right sides... And in the back are a set of painted doors and mod podged Stations of the Cross (also cut out from a catalogue). Here it all is, set up for the Saints to celebrate Mass! Everything fits inside the church for easy storage. Because this was a group gift for a set of siblings, I wanted them all to still have something to open, so I packaged up the sets of dolls for each kid. Not surprisingly, I do like to make a lot of my own gifts, but this was one of my favorite projects... In a long time. Check here to see pictures of the peg doll nativity I made for my niece! And, in case you were wondering... These are the basic pegs that I worked with for both the nativity and Saints. I was impressed with the quality, and they were a good value after I comparison shopped. When I reordered them, I noticed the price had dropped a couple of dollars, so now might be a great time to shop! ... because I am finally taking the leap and selling peg dolls! I'll be selling custom families like the ones I've shown here and here, and I've also created some fun "other" sets to list. Up first: "The Hobbit" character collection, in honor of the upcoming movie -- Bilbo, Gollum, Gandalf, Thorin Oakenshield, Legolas (don't freak out -- I know he's not in the book, but they're putting him in the movie and I wanted another tall character!), and Smaug the dragon. You can see closeups of each character on my new shop FB page! Next, the knight and the princess. My little Eliza LOVES these and plays with them for hours. Sometimes the knight saves the princess, and sometimes the princess saves the knight. But someone is always in danger. I'm planning on adding a dragon to this set as well (in case she gets tired of having them be in danger from dinosaurs, snakes, and giant puppies). And I really love this sweet little set: Faith, Hope, and Charity. I think these would make such a happy little present for someone. I have lots of other ideas for peg doll collections -- cupcake toppers, dolls for various hobbies, Hunger Games and maybe even Downton Abbey, because I'm obsessed. (Not sure about that one -- that's a LOT of characters. Any other Downton Abbey fans out there who think it would be awesome?) I'm also going to start adding digital stamps created with my doodling, so watch out for that coming soon. And if you'd like to keep up on all of this AND find out about a giveaway that I will be doing very soon, I'd love for you to come "like" the new Facebook page I've just set up for the shop. I promise not to totally overwhelm your news feed. :) Thanks for all your continued support!

The Kay Bojesen skier was designed at the end of the 1940s and has thereafter been produced in smaller sized collections. Due to this, the original designs of the skier are very rare. One of the figures is named after Kay Bojesen’s son, Otto, who was referred to as Boje. The female skier was named after Otto’s wife Ruth who often went by the nick name Datti. The adorable figures can be displayed by themselves but are even cuter in company of each other!
The options are endless.
