As long as there is an R in the month - Mussels are in season. (from May to August they're breeding, and not only are they rattly i.e. losing a lot of meat, they also need to be left alone to reproduce.) Mussels remind me of times spent in Brussels, of days sitting outside the cafés around Le Grand Place, eating steaming bowls of them with the best chips (frites) ever! I'm going over a few of my early notebook pages to add a drawing or extend the colour range, either because I love the colours or because I want to draw the subject. Here it was for both these reasons. Their shell colours are saturated shades of blue and brown, echoing barnacle clad rocks and sandy seashores... ...from my seasonal colour sample notebook.

Months after physicists made a self-standing time crystal, they've made one that works at room temperature, expanding the real-world uses of the quantum matter.
In 1829, a Belgian physicist devised a form of animation that is akin to our modern-day gifs: a spinning disk patterned with small repeating illustrations, attached to a handle that allowed it to spin and 'animate' the imagery. Due to the rapid progression of technology, phenakistoscopes' popularity lasted only a couple of years, yet they yielded wondrously beautiful moments in time and perhaps, a glimpse of the future. Check out these big ones, that somehow set a fine tone for a weekend... Some are rather modernist... ...Some border on psychedelic... This one has the curious effect of feeling the world turning...

Sy i ermene.
