Vihdoinkin tästä tuli valmista, siis keskiviikkoiltana, jolloin ompelin ripustuskujan alareunan käsin paikoilleen telkkaria katsellessa. Viime viikkojen liimaharsosouvi ja applikointiaherrus on vihdoinkin ohi tältä erää. Triplamummoksi tullut työkaveri/ystävä kävi hakemassa työn tänä aamuna, ristiäiset ovat viikon kuluttua. Sitten peite palaa vielä nimikoitavaksi takaisin, ja sitä odotellessa ompelen ripustuskujat kahteen edelliseen peitteeseen, jotka olen samalle mummille aikanaan ommellut - tähän uuteen kuja laitettiin jo valmiiksi. Mummin arvio oli, että uunituore äiti nostanee tämän heti seinälle, kun siitä tuli niin hieno. Eilen olikin kuin tilauksesta hieno kuvausilma ulkona. Peitteen malli on lähtöisin australialaisesta nettikaupasta, toteutus on tehty pienempänä, valmiin työn koko on 105 x 125 cm. Kankaiden valinta tapahtui siten, että asiakas ensin valitsi varastoistani kasan mieleisiään kankaita, joista sitten aloin valikoida kuhunkin blokkiin sopivia. Lisäilin sommitellessani tarpeen mukaan kankaita samaa värimaailmaa noudatellen, jotta sain riittävästi kontrastia sekä tummia, keskivaaleita ja vaaleita sävyjä. Hahmot ovat todella hauskoja ja viehättäviä ommeltavia, mutta yksityiskohtia riitti kyllä näperrettäväksi kussakin blokissa. Työ on tehty liimaharson avulla, sillä "helpolla tavalla", kuten yksi oppilas totesi jostain lukeneensa applikointimenetelmien vaikeusasteista. Helpoimmat blokit sain valmiiksi yhden illan aikana, monimutkaisempiin meni kauemmin. Siis pelkkään kiinni silittämiseen ja applikointiin. Hahmojen piirtämiseen liimaharsolle, silittämiseen kankaiden nurjalle ja leikkaamiseenkin kului yksi viikonloppu. Siipan aikanaan ompelukoneeseeni tekemä pleksitaso toimitti ansiokkaasti valopöydän virkaa sekä piirtäessä että palasia taustakankaalle asetellessa. En näet piirtänyt kuvioiden sijainteja taustakankaalle, vaan laitoin mallin valopöydälle, leivinpaperin sen päälle ja taustakankaan päällimmäiseksi. Keskellä olevaan blokkiin kuului taivaalle teksti Toytime Circus, mutta sitä ei haluttu laittaa, joten täytteeksi laitettiin kolme karannutta ilmapalloa. Työssä on käytetty kaikkiaan n. 40 eri kangasta, ja melkein yhtä montaa eri väristä konekirjontalankaakin applikaatioiden reunoissa. Kaupasta piti hakea ainoastaan luonnonvalkoinen taustakangas, joka löytyi Menitasta, sekä reunakaitaleiden harmaa kangas, joka nousi esiin Eurokankaan palakorista - se todella huusi päästä mukaan peitettä ajattelematta, ja vasta kotona tajusin, että sehän sopi reunoihin kuin nakutettu. Tikkaus noudattelee säästeliästä linjaa, pääasiallisesti kaitaleiden reunoja sekä hahmojen ja tähtien ääriviivoja noudatellen. Muutaman tähden tikkasin blokkien valkoisiin taustoihin, ja ulkoreunoihin piirtelin ympyröitä, jotka tikkasin vapaalla tikkauksella ja siirryin aaltoviivalla ympyrästä toiseen, ettei tarvinnut aina katkaista lankaa. ************************* I got this finished at last, on Wednesday evening I sewed the hanging sleeve by hand while watching TV. The huge fusible applique is now over, I think Iäve had more than a fair share of that for a while... I sewed this for a friend who is now triple Granny, and for whom I've already sewed two other baby quilt in the past. I will get this back for labelling after the Christening of the little baby boy that it is made for, and while waiting for it I got the two old ones back, so I can put a hanging sleeve on them. The pattern is from an Australian pattern shop, all of the farbics = about forty different - are from my stash, with the exception of the background and the gray border. The quilt measures 105 x 125 cm, it is a bit smaller than the original pattern. My friend first picked fabrics she liked to be used. I then started to plan how to put the blocks together and added fabrics according to their colours choices but trying to get enough contrast and light, medium and dark colours into them. I ended up using around 40 different fabrics - and almost as many different thread colours as well. The animal characters are really fun and cute, but do contain quite a lot of details. I made this "the easy way" = with fusible applique. Still, it took me a weekend just to draw the pieces to fusible web, iron them to the fabrics and cut them out. And still it took an evening just to fuse the parts to the background AND sew around them with blanket stitch, the more complicated ones took even longer. So I don't know why some call it the easy way... The middle block with the circus tent and clown actually contained the text "Toytime Circus", but we didn't want to put it in, so I made some "runaway" balloons to fill in the empty space. Quilting is rather simple and minimalistic. I quilted in the ditch of the sashings between the blocks and around the inner red border. Then some free motion quilting around the animals and some balloons to the outer border.
UPD: After some people asked me for a pattern, I decided to share a free template for the dragon so you can make your own. You can find the link to the template and some tips here. No sun to be expected in the next couple of days, but I couldn't wait for a chance to take nice pics. I just had to hare this with you as soon as the sleeve was on it. She's going to my daughter's room and was already named Lily. Nice to meet you too. I've shown the beginnings of her when I wrote about the fun workshop Ruth of Charly and Ben's Crafty Corner taught at our branch of the Irish Patchwork Society. I made a point of finishing this quilt asap, but it did take me longer than I hoped. The wallhanging measures 30 by 51 in. This is the so-called ticker tape technique, of which you can find numerous beautiful examples on Pinterest. By using the black background I wanted to give some of the stained glass feel. The wings, which a rainbow of almost-solids look more like stained glass: Whereas the body, made of prints, does not really look that: As in this technique the scraps are attached to an assembled quilt sandwich, the quilting of the image part is done while stitching, which is handy. So the decision was to be made only about quilting the background. I rejected the most obvious idea of doing it in black on black and instead decided to add more colour with my beloved YLI variegated thread which I have already used for several quilts. Of course it means you can see all the mistakes and awkward turns, but I feel the bright curves give the quilt more of a fairy-tale look (or psychedelic look, if you like ;))) To add even more colour (and psychedelia) I used the brightest piece of fabric I possess for the binding. Funny how one corner turned out to be all blue. All in all it was a fun project, and it turned out more impressive than I could ever expect, thank you Ruth! El patchwork es una técnica simple y muy decorativa, puedes crear muchos diseños originales para decorar tu casa y tus prendas. Aquí comparto contigo un detallado tutorial de patchwork para que te inicies en esta técnica, la aplicación. ¡Es fácil y divertido! En el caso que os voy a enseñar es un paño de cocina al que le aplico un cupcake de alegres colores, luego lo bordo a punto de festón. Vas a necesitar: 1 paño de cocina (pero puede ser una camiseta, el delantal, una colcha...) Telas de algodón 100% coordinadas con el paño. Flixelina Hilos para bordar a tono con las telas. Lo primero de todo es elegir el dibujo que queremos aplicar, en mi caso un cupcake, y sacar los patrones de las piezas que lo forman. Pasarlo a la flixelina (que es un papel con adhesivo por las dos caras). Es importante tener en cuenta que tenemos que pasar los dibujos a la flixelina del revés, como en un espejo. En el ejemplo del cupcake, da igual, no tiene un lado claro; pero si queremos aplicar un nombre, por ejemplo, tenemos que poner las letras como si estuvieran reflejadas en un espejo. ¿Porqué? Pues porque primero pegamos este papel por la parte de atrás de la tela, para que nos quede del derecho cuando lo peguemos a la tela. Ya lo vemos un poco más adelante. Si quereis aprender como hacer aplicaciones de letras mirad en la entrada que he preparado aqui De todas formas, con una vez que te confundas, nunca más te vuelve a ocurrir. Te lo digo por experiencia. Una vez que tenemos las formas en la flixelina las recortamos, dejando un espacio, no por el borde del dibujo Cogemos las telas que hemos elegido, y con ayuda de la plancha SIN VAPOR, le pegamos, por el revés de la tela el aplique. Tener cuidado de no planchar por la parte que tiene adhesivo, sino por el papel. Una vez que tenemos los dibujos pegados, los recortamos por la línea del dibujo. Les quitamos el papel Lo colocamos en el paño de cocina, donde queramos que vaya, y volvemos a planchar Es muy importante que lo pongas donde quieras, ya que, una vez planchado no se puede quitar. Ya tenemos el aplique hecho. Ahora toca bordar el festón. Necesitamos hilos para bordar a tono con nuestra aplicación. El punto festón es muy facilito, mirad este esquema que lo explica muy bien: Con esto conseguimos fijar totalmente el aplique, y además le da una sensación de acabado preciosa. Hay que tener paciencia, no hacerlo muy grande, ni muy pequeño. Y sobre todo tener cuidado que la parte de atrás quede limpia y sin nudos. Podéis hacerlo de colores, o de un solo color. Eso es al gusto de cada uno. Una vez terminada, la volvemos a planchar. Y ya tenemos nuestra aplicación terminada. ¿Verdad que es fácil? Met grote quilts vind ik het makkelijk met een schema te werken. Zo werkte ik bij de Dear Jane al met een kleurenschema voor de blokken dat rechts op de foto te zien is. Nu werk ik met een quiltschema. Ik zorg wel steeds dat ik iets voor lig op schema, zodat ik , als dat nodig is, een dag niets kan doen. I like to work with a scheme while working on a large quilt. I already used a color scheme for my Dear Jane as you can see on the right in the first picture. This time I use a quilt scheme. The trick is to work a bit in advance. That way you can always take a day off.

First you cut, cut, cut.....and then you chain yourself to the sewing machine and sew like crazy, LOL. At left, the Gordian Knot from my quilt class. When I stopped sewing on Saturday with two halves of the top. (it's on point) That elongated rail section is the last piece to be added when you go back to finish off the partial seams. Today's goal is to finish this top up. Pattern source: Gordian Knot designed by Mary Whitehead. Our teacher said Mrs. Whitehead had drawn up the designs before her passing but died before she could include the assembly instructions. The teacher spent 4 years figuring out how THAT part was done for the 9 designs. This is knot #1. I started this pile of Triple Rail blocks on Thursday using scraps from the Belles scrappy challenge container. By Sunday afternoon I counted them up while I pressed the final seams-- 80 blocks separated out by color groupings. I had some left (22) from my last quilt of this type. Just how many did I need for straight sets anyway? I made 8 more, LOL. Depending on whether I want a border or not it would take 77 or 108. A whole quilt hiding in that little scrap box, in other words! Some of the "singletons" are sewn up as well into 4 Ashcombe panels. It is the equivalent of two blocks worth if I cut a center strip to assemble them. I set this all aside for a meeting sewing project. I showed you the two bands that could be for either RR crossing of Grandmother's Scrap Bag on Friday. Since that post, I made a total of 8- 3-D bowties blocks. A few are on the design wall. I need 35 for an on point set and have a total of 12 on hand. I also made 2-Puss in the Corner blocks from the nickel squares. The Belles and I made a ton of these blocks using the Billie Lauder Quick Trick method for uneven nine patches. I had to refresh my memory on how to do it, LOL. And then I finished off the evening by making some string blocks. Had I hit my own scrap basket a bit more, I could have kept stitching for days but these used up most of the odd bits from the Belles Challenge scrap box---plus some longer strips from my 1 1/2 cuts to cover the longest required lengths. Obviously I will need quite a bit more of these. 35 total blocks if I just sash and cornerstone them. BUT I am considering treating them as a HST and making a "Kitchen Sink" version. I could have sworn that I had a picture on the blog of one of those but can't locate it now to link back. Guess you will just have till I find one of my mom's in the WTIL gallery pages or an old Belles version from the photo archives. Because we are about to turn the calendar page on the month of February, I swapped out the wall hangings and seasonal decorations this morning. I think the March Joined at the Hip (JATH) quilt of the month should be next on my reward list along with a completion of the Spring "In Season" quilt!! For the base unit of the JATH can hang up there naked, LOL. It is hard not think it is spring already when we had an overnight low of 62 degrees, albeit with rain and storms on the way in sometime today. The daffodils have been out for a week and the neighborhood Bradford Pears are opening up like popcorn. I have seen a few tulip trees out on my drive into town as well. Our camellia bush will be next provided we don't get the beginning blooms zapped by a late winter frost. So the Gordian Knot finish is today's project. Then I want to swap out machines and start something else. Even though I want to do those two reward projects I just mentioned, Sheila and I are sort of challenging each other to start on the 4 patch diagonal chain quilt I showed HERE. We have been emailing back and forth about it. She will hit some squares she had set back for this quilt and I will hit the nickel squares with a goal of donation sized quilt for me. The birthday girl FAB also has a plan for us to sew for her bday party. It would use 2 1/2 inch strips and we would do the Jelly Roll 1600 race, I guess. Date has not been set but I DO have a pile of the required strip sizes in my Belles scrap box plus an overstuffed container on the shelf that could be raided. Looks like I am going to be busy--------but that's the way I like it! Hope you find something that captures your attention too.
One of my goals for this year was to use up all the precut collections I've got hanging around in my studio. While I like them in concept I find them really hard to work with. Still I couldn't resist this Boat House collection by Sweetwater and when I stumbled across this Sloops pattern on Pinterest I knew it was meant to be. While this pattern is layer cake friendly the instructions are not. There are also no cutting instructions included for the blocks. I'm really glad I took the time to make a test block to verify my cutting plan before I started chopping up my layer cake. Here are my suggestions if you decide to make this quilt for yourself. From your background fabric cut 39 of the following: Piece 3 - 6 1/2" x 5 1/2" Piece 5 - 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" Piece 8 - 8 1/4" x 5 1/4" Pieces 10 & 11 - 4" x 2 1/2" (for a total of 78) From you layer cake cut 39 of the following: (I did these in stacks of 5) Piece 9 - 2 3/4" x 10" Piece 6 - 7 1/4" x 1" Piece 7 - 7 1/4" x 4 1/2" For your first block you will also need to cut 1: Piece 1 - 3" x 2" from print Piece 4 - 5 1/2" x 3" from a different print Piece 2- 2 1/2" x 4" from background You don't need to cut all 39 of these pieces because you will be able to use trimmings from your blocks for these pieces. When you trim after adding piece 5 you will be left with a triangle that is perfect for future flags. Also, the piece remaining after you trim piece 8 is exactly the right size for another smaller flag 4. Finally, when you trim your final block you will be left with background triangles that will fit in piece 2. I do find pieces 2 and 3 to be the most awkward to sew. Once you get past those the block is a breeze. I have to admit I'm not usually a fan of the revolving rotary mat but for squaring up these blocks it's a life saver! I'm making progress but the depressing thing about paper piecing is once you've done a few you have a pretty good idea how long it takes to make each block. These average about 30 minutes a piece so I'm looking at 15 more hours of sailboat construction. I see a movie marathon in my future:-) Better late than never, linking up with this week's W.i.P. Over the last couple of weeks, I've been learning how to do needle turn applique; the second and third borders in the Midnight at the Oasis quilt involve a lot of applique, something I haven't done a lot of. I will be talking more about the different applique options in my QAL post this Friday, but this is a fairly long tutorial so I thought I'd dedicate a whole post to it :o) Needle turn applique (where you turn the raw edge of the applique piece under with your needle as you sew it to the foundation piece) seems to be the holy grail of applique techniques. Certainly with practice you can achieve some pretty remarkable results. For me, one of the gurus of needle turn is Sarah Fielke - and I am lucky enough to have a DVD (that came with an issue of Quilters Companion magazine) where Sarah demonstrates her technique. The technique for needle turn applique I'll demonstrate here is based pretty closely on Sarah's technique. I have Sarah's permission to share this here - but you can also learn this technique via Sarah's Craftsy class, or by purchasing the same DVD I have used through her website (you'll need to scroll down to the bottom of the linked page) (Disclaimer - I am not affiliated with Craftsy or with Sarah's store at all, I just wanted to let you know where you can learn more!) One of the brilliant things about this applique technique is that it takes very little preparation, and it is extremely portable. Making your Templates: The first thing you'll need to do is make templates of your applique shape. There are a few ways you can do this - trace the shape onto template plastic and cut it out. Or (as suggested by Sarah) use Quick Laminate sheets (available from office supply stores). I've been using these to make my templates for my hand-pieced Bring Me Flowers BOM blocks, and it is so quick and easy. You just peel back the top clear sticky layer, put your photocopy of the template on the bottom card sheet, smooth the sticky layer back over it and cut out your template. This is such a genius method! Preparing your Fabric: Once you've cut your background fabric to size, you'll need to mark both the diagonals on your fabric. To do this, you can use a dissolvable fabric marker, or a hera marker. To prepare your applique shape, you will need to trace around your prepared template onto the right side of your fabric. Sarah recommends using a silver gel pen for this - which is what I've been doing and it works brilliantly. It makes it easy to see your stitching line since it glitters slightly, and the gel inks sits on top of the fabric and mostly wears away as you're stitching around the shape. Any remaining pen should wash away when you wash the quilt (and honestly it's barely noticeable anyway.) Trim your fabric to a scant 1/4 inch around the edge of the shape. Once you're ready to start sewing, finger press around the line you've drawn onto your fabric shape - this will make it easier to turn the edge under when you are sewing it down. Needle Turn Applique: Find the centre on your background fabric, and pin the applique piece in place. I found by turning under one side of the centre point, I could pin it pretty close to the intended position. Line the other end up as well and pin in place. Use a thread that is matched to your applique piece, rather than the background. If you're stitching is a little off (like mine) it won't be nearly as noticable. I've been using Aurifil 50wt in colours that are reasonably close to the applique colours, and it's worked really well. To start, tie a knot in the end of your thread (I use this method). Take your needle up through the applique piece (not the background) right on your drawn line. Turn under the first little bit of the seam allowance with your needle, right where you've bought the needle through. For your first stitch, put the needle down into the background fabric right next to where you came through the applique piece, and travel a small way under the fabric before bringing your needle back through. Catch a few threads on the applique piece, and bring your needle all the way through, gently pulling the thread tight. Turn the next section of seam allowance under with your needle, and stitch down into the background right next to where you came through the applique piece. Again, travel a short distance (about 1/4") under the background, before bringing the needle back up through and catching a few threads of the applique piece. Continue stitching in this way around the edge of your applique piece until you get to the point. Bring your needle out right at the point. Make an extra stitch right at the point of your applique shape. Use your needle to turn in the seam allowance at the point - this is a little tricky to start with, but if you turn too much under you can gently tug on the thread to bring the point out again. Then, continue stitching around the applique piece. Once you've stitched all the way around, take your needle through to the back and either make a small knot, or do a couple of tiny stitches on top of each other to finish the thread. And that's it! My shapes aren't perfect, but I'm getting better with practice. I didn't think I'd enjoy this part all that much - but it is actually really relaxing.
