At the beginning of 2022, we decided to make a quilt each month that uses a past TCJ quilt pattern. It is so easy as a quilt company to only focus on the new and even easier to not revisit past work. But, I love sewing up older designs because the stress of designing them is gone. It is just sewing for fun. In January

I found a nice explanation of what are "wa" quilts in this blog post. Although not a crafty blog, the author shows many beautiful "wa" quilts from the last year Tokyo show - have a look. I will dare to post a quote about "wa" meaning here: "Wa is also a prefix that designates something belongs to native Japanese culture. Washoku is Japanese food, a washitsu is a room with tatami mat flooring and paper-screen doors, wafuku is clothing like kimono or jimbei, and waji are written characters that originated in Japan as opposed to being borrowed from the Chinese language. Wa quilts, therefore, use Japanese-style designs that do indeed maintain balance and harmony in a very non-Western way. The fabric in wa quilts are typically subdued colors, but rarely without a delicate pattern or texture. Patterns and motifs simultaneously achieve balance and movement. " Квилт-победитель шоу я уже показывала, его автор - Etsuko Misaka. Поймала себя на том, что постоянно возвращаюсь к его фотографии. Люблю. Grand prix-First Place quilt I've already shown, but because it is a "wa" quilt, I will show it again. Quilt by Etsuko Misaka. I love it. А это квилт с призом моих личных симпатий в категории "wa". I have always been a fan of M.C. Escher's work. It's fascinating to me to try and figure out his optical illusions and to see how he starts with one object and ends up with something completely different. His Geometries are even more intriguing to me. When I saw this pattern AND saw it made from Kaffe fabrics, it was a win/win for me. Cutting all of the pieces took some time. The fabrics had to be organized into light/medium/dark sets and then cut into strips. The strips were subcut into parallelogram shaped pieces. And the sewing began. And the ripping came shortly there after. After much sewing and not as much ripping (thank goodness!), the blocks are finished! Two different blocks were needed to complete the design... a left facing triangle and a right facing triangle. Once all of the triangles are made, the pattern gives very good directions on placing them in the right order so you end up with this! I could never design something like this, but I can follow directions! Blocks will be cut in half to fill in the top and bottom areas. These blocks aren't sewn into rows yet. It's going to be a slow process, too, to make sure they stay in the right order. This is one of the coolest patterns I've used. The link to the pattern has one made in black, white and red, too. I might have to make another one at some point, but need to finish this one first. Happy Quilting!

Happy Canada Day to all my fellow Canadian Quilters! At the last quilt guild meeting, one of the ladies showed a small convergence quilt she made. I had leafed through a pattern book about convergence quilts recently and seeing this quilt brought the quilting style to the forefront of my mind again. So I checked and tadaa! the guild library had the exact pattern book, so I borrowed it and got down to business. I'm starting with a very simple practice piece - if I like it a lot, I'll turn it into a bigger quilt, because enough with the wall hangings already! - I'm just not the wall hanging type! I picked four pieces of tie-died fabric, about 14" square, laid them out according to the instructions, sewed the right seams together, then cut them into the 1", 1.5", 2" etc strips starting in the middle and working out. Then there's the shuffling of the strips. And the sewing together of the strips. All was well, until I became convinced that I accidentally laid one of the fabric squares wrong face up. It's so hard to tell with these. I got nit-picky and started ripping out seams and re-doing them properly. After about 1/3 of the piece fixed, I started wondering if anyone would ever have noticed and if it really was enough of an eyesore to justify the extra time - but too late, now I had started - I'll know for next time! (well, actually, I stopped swapping the strips after I replaced two of them - it really was too much work). Now a turn, cut it all up again: ... mix the strips together again and you get... Yeah, okay, I'm not convinced... Maybe I need different batiks. It's not as much of an "umpf" quilt as the one in the book... I'll see what I end up using this thing for :) Maybe it'll grown on me, too! Let's hope so. For now, I'll call it Sunset on Water, at least it definitely inspires a title in me, haha!

Toad & Sew’s first pattern, the New Year’s Kiss quilt, calls for nine colors. It made a splash in the quilting corner of Instagram with its bold and modern colors paired with traditional shapes. These elements became Toad & Sew’s foundation. For instance, mauve sits directly next to burnt orange in the cover version of New Year’s Kiss. It’s not a combination you always see in a time when natural palettes and soft pastels reign supreme.

Today we're combining piecing and applique, as well as using 2 different applique methods. Don't stress. It's still an easy block. Book vs. CD: Once again, the diagram in the book differs from Jane's actual quilt. It is just fine to leave it the way it is, but if you want to be more accurate, just reduce the size of the "melons" a little bit. I always describe the method I used to construct the block over here. This is not written in stone. You can always use whichever method you feel most comfortable with. You will need freezer paper for this block. Cut two 3 1/4" squares from your dark fabric and four 3 1/4" squares from your light fabric. Applique can made your blocks "shrink" a little so I like to cut the squares a little bigger than necessary and trim them down afterwards. Trace or print the block pattern onto the non-shiny side of the freezer paper. Accurately cut it into 4 squares following the lines in the diagram. Cut the inside out of the "melons" on two of the squares. Cut out the melon shapes on the other two squares. Using a hot, dry iron, iron the squares (with the inside of the melons cut out) onto the center of your dark fabric squares. I like to use the "freezer paper on top" method for "normal" applique. If you Google "hand applique", you will find a wealth of other methods. Iron the melon shapes you cut out onto the right side of an extra piece of dark fabric, making sure to leave at least 1/2" between them. Cut them out, leaving a little bit less than 1/4" seam allowance around the outside edge. Cut out and clip the inside of the first two melons as described when we made block C-9. Baste everything in place. Make sure you position the dark melons accurately on the light fabric squares. Remember to baste more than 1/4" in from the edge to leave room for the seam to be turned under. For the melon squares: Use the reverse applique method described in block to reverse applique the melons, positioning your light fabric squares behind the dark ones as the background. For the patches we cut out: Using the edge of the freezer paper as a guide, turn the seam under as you go like we did in reverse applique, except that this is an outside edge. Using a small invisible stitch, applique the melon patches onto the light fabric squares. I found this web site to help you with the invisible stitch. It is VERY important not to sew too far into the fabric. If you turn the needle a bit you can actually have it come out almost horizontally on the edge of the fabric. The goal is for the stitches not to be visible at all. Trim all the squares down to 2.75". Make sure all your appliques are still centered on their squares. Sew a light square to a dark square. Repeat with the other two squares. Check the photo of the block to ensure that your melons are pointing in the right direction. Press the seams toward the dark squares. Sew the two resulting rectangles together, once again checking the photo. Press the seams. A-7: Dad's Plaids (I had a very hard time describing this one. If you need any clarification or notice an error, please let me know.)
