This is a lovely quilt block and really easy to make. You will be cutting triangles with this method but don't run off as this is simple using a quilting ruler that has a 60° line. If you don't have a quilting ruler with a 60° line then you can use your cutting mat and we have a tutorial for that if you need it. Swap Miniquilt efterår 2015 Inden jeg kaster mig ud i denne tutorial, så vil jeg lige henvise til ophavs kvinden til denne skønne teknik nemlig Nicole Daksiewicz fra "Modern Handcraft". Hop endelig over og tjek hendes ud - der er mange lækre (og som navnet hentyder moderne) sager! Tilbage til de der moderne hexagoner. Det jeg viser her, er den måde jeg er endt ud med at synes bedst om. Nicole gør det på lidt en anden måde, tjek det ud og gør så hvad der passer dig bedst. Klargør Hexagonerne: Til at lave hexagonerne bruger jeg papper, stofkvadrater der er 1" højere end højden på pappet, gluepen, ritråd og nål. Jeg klipper/skærer ikke stoffet i hexagoner, det er ikke nødvendigt. Jeg sætter en lille plet lim midt på hexagonen og vender limen nedad mod stoffet. Så sidder pap og lim sammen, og jeg behøver ingen clips eller lignende under rining. Jeg starter med at tage to ri sring, så første hjørner bliver låst. Jeg stikker kun igennem stoffet - aldrig gennem pappet. Derefter drejer jeg min hexagon et hak mod urets retning og tager endnu et risiting. Når jeg drejer mod urets retning, er det for at opnå, at stinget "låser" hjørnet. Jeg forsætter hele vejen rundt, men undlader at hæfte i samme hjørne som jeg har startet. Når jeg har riet en stak hexagoner, skal de presses, så kanterne forbliver pæne og skarpe, når jeg piller pappet ud. Brug gerne lidt strygestivelse hvis du har. Når hexagonerne er kølet af/tørret efter presning, fjerner jeg pappet. Jeg lader bare rytråden sidde. Når du har den mængde hexagoner du skal bruge - og gerne lidt flere, så du kar noget at vælge imellem - er det tid til at gøre baggrundsstoffet klar. Optegning af grid: Inden du tegner et grid, til at placere hexagonerne i, op, er det vigtigt at regne ud hvor lang afstand der skal være mellem linjerne. Jeg er kommet frem til at højden af hexagonet + 1/4" delt med 2 = linjeafstanden. I dette eksempel betyder det, at 1 3/4" + 1/4" = 2. Når det deles med 2 er linjeafstanden = 1". Jeg tegner her på papir, da det er nemmere at vise teknikker på en jævn flade. Start med at markere linjer enten lodret eller vandret. Her er 1" mellem linjer, og det skal der så være mellem ALLE linjerne! Næste sæt linjer skal tegnes med en vinkel på 60 grader ift første linjer. Sidste sæt linjer tegner, så den rammer alle skæringspunkterne fra første to linjesæt. Nu ligner det mønsteret som vi kender fra kardus patchwork pap. Læg en eller anden form for mellemfor bag stoffet - lim gerne sammen - og vi er klar til at placere hexagonerne. Jeg bruger ofte en vandopløselig pen til at tegne op med, men det er også muligt at bruge kridt, sewline pen, hera marker eller andet der nemt kan fjernes sidenhen. Placer og lim hexagonerne på: Først skal alle hexagonerne placeres på baggrunds stoffet (her bruger jeg hør), og det kan godt tage noget tid. Læg specielt mærke til retning på stof (så som striber), nuancer mv. Af erfaring ved jeg, at jeg skal tage et billede af mit færdige "oplæg", at der så nemt går ged i det for mig senere... Det gør der i øvrigt alligevel, men så har jeg da i det mindste mit udgangspunkt at forholde mig til! Til pålimning bruger jeg enten Roxanes Glue-Baste-It (ses på billedet) eller den vandfaste lim som Nicole Daksiewicz anbefaler (kan ikke huske hvad den hedder, men Helene Juul Design sælger den). Jeg sætter en lille prik lim i hvert hjørne. Mere er ikke nødvendigt. Så placerer jeg hexagonen på dens plads, og går videre til næste hexagon. Jeg bruger faktisk en pincet til dette arbejde, da det er så nemt at få gnattet fingrene ind i lim... som så kommer på forsiden af hexagonerne... Den opmærksomme læser kan tydeligt se, at mine gridlinjer ikke rammer helt perfekt. Nu er det sådan, at jeg heller ikke syr helt perfekt, så i sidste ende passer det super godt sammen! Når alle hexagoner er limet fast, lægger jeg en eller anden type mellemfor (termolam, hobbs eller lignende) bag stoffet, og så quilter jeg i samtlige optegnede linjer. Jeg quilter altid alle linjer i samme retning, inden jeg tager fat på næste retning. Se det var det... ikke spor svært, men en alvorligt afhængigheds skabende aktivitet skulle jeg hilse at sige. A couple of things to remember before starting to machine piece hexagons with this method: *Cut your hexagons accurately. Perfectly cut hexagons will help you achieve the precision required for this method. *Sew consistent 1/4" seam allowances. A 1/4" foot or patchwork foot is helpful. I'm able to place my needle 1/4" in by lining up the edge of the fabric with the edge of the presser foot. *You may want to reduce your stitch length to 2.0. Smaller stitches will help you hit your stop points more accurately. *Don't press until all hexagons are sewn. I know this seems counter intuitive, but I found that it's easier to sweep seams out of the way when they aren't pressed down. *Be sure not to backstitch into the seam allowance. Even one stitch will make a difference! It's better to stop a tish in front of the stitching line rather than stitch too far. *The KEY TO THIS METHOD is your stitching lines. Instead of marking those 1/4" points, the stitching lines will tell you where to start and where to stop sewing. *This method works sewing individual hexagons onto a column or sewing two columns together. For the purpose of this tutorial, we'll sew one column and then add one hexagon at a time. *Relax...this really does work. It's going to feel odd at first, but you'll get the hang of it. Take a deep breath and grab some hexagons and let's get started. I used black thread for the purpose of this tutorial, but you'll want to use matching thread. Step 1 Sew a column Start by sewing the hexagons together to make a column. Sew from edge to edge as shown and backstitch at each end. Don't press. Repeat and make your column as long as you'd like. For the pink quilt above I sewed 10 hexagons together to make my columns. Step 2 - Sew Seam #1 Place a hexagon in the second column as shown. Place the hexagons right sides together along seam #1 lining up edges and ends of the hexagons. Notice how there is a stitching line on the left side and no stitching on the right. (If you don't see a stitching line flip the entire piece over!) Make sure the seam on the left is swept away from the hexagon you are going to sew. Pin if desired. Position the hexagon under the presser foot. Drop the needle on the stitching line 1/4" from the edge. Notice how the presser foot is lined up with the edge which will automatically place the needle 1/4" in. I move the flywheel by hand to make sure the needle drops right on the stitching line. Sew from this point a couple of stitches, backstitch the SAME number of stitches. Continue sewing to the end and backstitch. You can sew to the end because there is no stitching line to stop you. Step 3 - Sew the next adjacent seam (Seam #2) Turn the hexagon right side up and the first seam is finished. Time for seam 2! Place the hexagons right sides together along seam #2 again lining up edges and ends of the hexagons. Sweep any seams away from the hexagon so that the two hexagons lay flat and are aligned. Pin if desired. Notice again that there is stitching on one side and no stitching on the other side. This time I decided to stitch from non stitching line side toward the stitching. Start sewing at the end, sew forward a few stitches, backstitch and continue sewing until you reach the stitching line on the other side. The stitching line means STOP! The picture below also shows how the seams and the other hexagon is swept out of the way. It is better to stop just in front of the stitching line rather than sew past it. Notice how I stopped just before I reached the stitching. Be sure to backstitch at this point. This is how your intersection should look when sewn. Step 4 Add a hexagon to column two Place the next hexagon in sewing position in the second column. Place this hexagon right sides together on the one above. Notice in the picture below how no stitching lines are visible. Don't be fooled. There is a stitching line, but you need to flip the entire piece to see it. Flip the piece over. Feel for stitching lines...find them and make sure you can see them before you sew! There is the stitching line. Make sure your hexagons are aligned and pin if desired. Make sure the seam is swept away from the hexagon you're sewing. Sew this seam just like Step 1. Drop your needle on the stitching line, sew forward, backstitch, continue sewing to the end and backstitch. Remember, you can sew all the way to the end because there is no stitching line to stop you. Step 5 Continue sewing adjacent seams. Flip the hexagon right side up. The next step is to sew the next adjacent seam. Place the hexagons right sides together along the seam making sure they are aligned. Sweep the seams away on both ends. Flip the entire piece over so that you can see the stitching lines. Notice this time that there are stitching lines on both sides. This means you have one START point and one STOP point. Sweep the seams on both sides AWAY from the hexagon you are sewing. Drop your needle on the stitching line 1/4" in, sew a couple of stitches, backstitch, continue sewing and stop on or just before the stitching line. Backstitch. These are the most difficult seams to sew. Make sure your hexagons are aligned and lay flat. I pin these seams to make sure everything stays aligned before I sew. Continue sewing adjacent seams as shown above. Be sure to check for stitching lines. Repeat the process for each additional hexagon. When all the hexagons are sewn in, turn the piece right side down and finger press the seams into position. Trim threads at this point. Place the piece right side down and press. **Sweeping seams away from the hexagon you're sewing means sweep the seams and everything else too...in other words, any other hexagons need to be moved out of the way so that the two you are sewing lay flat and are aligned. You don't want to catch any other fabric in your seams. **This tutorial demonstrates sewing one hexagon at a time. This method also works with two columns of hexagons. Sew as many columns as desired. You'll sew one seam at a time just like above except most of the seam will have a stitching line stop and start point and you'll have a floppy column of hexagons to keep out of the way. I recommend you practice one at a time and when you feel comfortable with that, go for the column. Many thanks to blogless Elaine for sharing this method with me! You're the best, my friend. I propose we change the name of this weekly post to {FiW} Wednesday...as in FINISHED it Wednesday. (which I guess should be {Fi} Wednesday, but go with me, here.) Because there were a LOT of finishes this week. Phew! Well, two. But that feels like A LOT when you consider how long those things have been on my WiP list. First, I finished my pineapple blocks for Yolanda in the Bee Happy Bee. I was (as usual) intimidated by her blocks, mostly because of what I've heard people say about pineapple blocks. She found a pattern by Allison Quilt Designs (called the Crimson Rambler) that didn't require paper piecing, and assured us these weren't difficult. I believed her, really I did! It's just that I had to finish Libby's blocks before I felt like it was fair to start Yolanda's. AND...and that's a big and...I knew I needed to be able to do them when I could concentrate (read: not while the girls were awake and playing) and when I had a large enough block of time to finish them (read: not while the girls were simply napping). But I found time to wrap my head around the process, and another chunk of time to get them finished. I really like the way the two I made turned out, and I can't wait to see her finished quilt! It'll be stunning! My other big finish this week is the quilt I have been working on for the Quilts for Japan drive. There has been a wonderfully huge push to encourage the quilters of the world to make quilts for the people who were devastated by the earthquake/tsunami that hit Japan in March. I've had this design in my head since I started swapping hexies in (funny, Yolanda's) hexagon swap on Flickr. (Yolanda is clearly a big part of my quilting life this week!) The Quilts for Japan drive was just the push I needed to actually get the hexies out and work them into a quilt. I have decided to call this my "TNT Quilt." Mostly because the best thing that could happen to this quilt is if it got just a little too close to a stick of dynamite. :o) No. Really, it's because I tried SO doggone MANY new things with this quilt. Get it? Tried New Things? Catchy, no? For starters, I used quilter's spray adhesive to hold the hexies on until I raw-edge appliqued them down. Second, I used Kona Premium muslin for the white. It was VERY nice to have a whole piece of fabric and not have to piece anything. I also added a little yellow hexie for the label. Oh, and FYI - the hexagons were all cut with the Accuquilt Go! Studio hexagon die. Next, I quilted it myself. (TOTALLY new thing for me!) I knew this was too big for me to quilt on my home machine, though, so when my rock star friend, Traci, and I took a long arm class at our LQS, I knew this quilt was destined to be quilted on the big APQS Millenium (a.k.a. "Millie". Unique, no?) The class was really good, but I didn't have enough time to finish it there that day. Thankfully, I have a wonderful neighbor who offered to watch Mookie (who will be 3 in a few weeks! Gasp!) last Friday morning while I went down and finished this. I took Sprout (and a bag full of toys) with me. Just in case anyone is wondering, the floor of a quilt shop is probably not the best place for a curious 11 month old who thinks every single thing on the floor belongs in her mouth.) Sprout didn't last on the floor nearly as long as I was hoping, so I'm thankful I had my Ergo with me. She fell asleep as I was quilting this, which is suprising considering how much commotion and noise that machine makes! I have to say - I was surprised at how much the backing and the top moved and shrank during the quilting process. Well, and during the trimming process! I had to cut a LOT off to square it up! And then came the binding. (sigh). I decided that since I needed to finish this quilt quickly (Lecien, a Japanese fabric distributor in California, is offering to send them to needy families in Japan), I needed to machine bind it. I really should have taken a step back and watched some tutorials and talked to people who machine bind, because I could have used some serious help! My corners look like something the dog would roll in, you can sometimes see the stitches from the other side, and it's not perfectly even all the way around like it would have been if I'd hand-bound it. BUT I don't know how many months later I would be finishing it if I'd had to bind it by hand! (notice how I am not showing you any pictures of the binding? I'll leave that to Kelly and her superstar binding!) Mookie has helped make this quilt from the very beginning. Since she loves to swipe the hexies and make a "fairy path", I had to explain to her that this quilt was for a special family. A family that doesn't have a home anymore. A family that is very sad. And so anytime I was working on it, she would talk to me about the family, and ask me a zillion questions. When I showed it to her this morning and asked her to help me take pictures, she was very excited. I love that she's compassionate even at a young age. :o) The finished quilt is about 50x80". Kinda long, but that's okay. That's how long it had to be to incorporate all the hexies. I like that the quilt "became," for lack of a better term. I had no plan (which is very unlike me) - just a handful of hexies that I wanted to use. The quilt dictated the rest for me. Rather like how a novel "writes" itself, well this quilt "created" itself. :o) And since Sprout was such an integral part of the making of this quilt, I will shower you with a handful of gratuitous baby shots. :o) Now then. Back to the works in progress... I haven't touched anything else all week. :o) I haven't started anything new (including the bee blocks for Janice that are about to be a month behind...). But I've got a few more things that I have to finish soon, so I hope to get to work on them tomorrow. For my sake, I'm just going to type out a little list. I know I'm going to need to refer back to it soon enough. :o) -Audrey's mug rug (and about 3 other mug rugs for other people) - A few more infinity scarves - My Robert Kaufman Kona Solids Challenge Quilt - A few bee blocks - My birdie stitches blocks Oh, and in the "canvas" department, Dave and had a little "wine time creations" of our own on Friday night. It was Good Friday, and I thought it would be nice to paint something to reflect the sacrifice Jesus made for us that day. I showed Dave a few photos of my idea, and we got started. Even though it was Good Friday, we painted the scene for Sunday morning. Dave wants to paint The Scream next. I'm not sure, but I think that one is going to have to go in the "unspeakable wifely duties" category. (I do not like that painting!) The good thing about Canvas and Cocktails is that you don't have to paint what the rest of the class is painting. Thank goodness! :o) I hope you have a great and crafty week!
