Classic Quilt Blocks have been sewn for centuries, are easy to recognise and are every quilters favorite. Let's celebrate these gorgeous blocks and add them to our quilting projects! It's tutorial week in my Classic Quilt Blocks series, and I'm really excited about this one. I've been pondering all week on the lack of antique Friendship Star quilts and I'm even more determined to encourage you to sew your own. Today's tutorial is quite simple and the only thing I wanted to mention was the HST units. I always cut my pieces larger than required and trim the HST's once they're sewn. No matter how accurately we cut and sew, they'll be inconsistencies and this method ensures your HST's are accurate and straight every time. Take your time when trimming the HST's - you don't want to lose any points. Use the sewn diagonal seam and the markings on your ruler as a guide or use a Bloc Loc ruler (if you have one) to trim the units accurately. The following tutorial will yield a 6" (finished block) and at the end I've provided a Cutting Chart for six sizes to help you cut and sew the Friendship Star block for an array of projects. I hope you had some time to plan a few blocks using last week's colouring sheet, and you're all ready to sew. Grab your fabrics and let's go: From your background fabric cut: 4 x 2 1/2" squares (A) 2 x 3" squares cut diagonally to yield 4 triangles (B) From your print fabric cut: 1 x 2 1/2" square (C) 2 x 3" squares cut diagonally to yield 4 triangles (D) With right sides together, sew a background (B) triangle to each of the print (D) trinagles, along the long sides and pressing seams towards the print triangles. Carefully trim each HST unit to 2 1/2" square, ensuring you don't cut off any points or seam allowances. Arrange the background (A) squares, the print (C) square and the four HST units into three rows of three squares as shown in the photo above. Ensure the correct orientation of the HST units prior to sewing. Sew the units together into the three rows, pressing the seams in alternate directions for nesting. Carefully matching all seams, sew the three rows together, pressing the long seams open to yield one Friendship Star block which should measure 6 1/2" square. Tada! One gorgeous Friendship Star block to use in future projects! I hope you had fun sewing along with me. It is a simple block, but I love how the star dances on that background fabric. Good Morning Everyone! I'm doing a happy dance over here. My girlfriend is flying in to see me today and we are headed down to Paducah for the quilt show! (Ha! Gotcha!! Now it's 9:36 p.m. my time and this blog post still isn't done! I'm gonna have to blame it on Nancy! We were out gallivanting around, walking down by the Cumberland River where the deer were grazing....you know...doin' what girlfriends do!) But now, down to business.... I thought I'd tell you about my young friend that helped me rescue my pig when we were kids. Her name was Angie. She was red headed full of freckles, and oh how I loved my friend. She was in the 'popular' group at school, so to speak, on the swim team, smart, smart, smart, etc. We were inseparable. Never had a fight. But one day in the 7th grade, she told me she never wanted to speak to me again. Now she spent almost every weekend at the ranch with us, went to church with us, was truly part of our family, so this was devastating for me. I tried to ask her why and she just said she didn't want to speak to me. So I was pretty miserable the rest of my junior high years. Walked around like I had a 'mark' on me. Of course I was too young to understand it probably didn't have anything to do with me, but that something else was going on in her life. In our high school years she moved to Iowa so that made things easier for me. But one day after I was married, years later, my then husband was working down at the Thermal, CA airport and wastelling me about another employee named Hans Green. I told him to ask him if he had a sister named Angie. He did!! And one night while he was talking to him, I asked if Angie would get on the phone. Imagine my surprise when she did. She talked like nothing ever happened. I just let it be, still wondering what happened, all those years ago. A few years after that, I heard that she committed suicide. It hit me below the gut. You know how we always wonder if there was something we could have done. And not until just a month ago did I find out 'why'. If there is ever truly a 'why' to suicide. She found out she had a brain tumor. Her dad was a doctor and they knew what was 'ahead' so to speak. So here I am 50 years old, and finally a little light shines on to some devastating event in childhood. I am dedicating to this block to her. Angie. Angie Green! Classic Quilt Blocks have been sewn for centuries, are easy to recognise and are every quilters favorite. Let's celebrate these gorgeous blocks and add them to our quilting projects! The Friendship Star block is such a fun block to play with, whether you adapt the colour values, the layouts or the block design. There are so many variations of this block and you'll notice that some of them are referred to by different names, such as the Ribbon Star block or Water Wheel block etc. Today I'm going to share a few of the variations I played with to inspire you. Hopefully they will illustrate the gorgeous secondary patterns you can create with this block when it's used in a quilt. Please note these diagrams are for inspirational purposes only, they are not patterns. Let's start with the most basic Friendship Star block like we sewed in last week's tutorial: In either a straight setting or an on point setting, these gorgeous blocks dance and float around the quilt like ballerinas. The block may be simple, but doesn't it make a sweet and pretty quilt? Each example is all about the blocks and I love that! If I had to choose, I think my favorite is the on point setting. If you wanted to add a little more visual interest, then add some sashings and cornerstones. Perfection! Adding a third colour to the block not only changes the look of the quilt but it adds an extra element. An extra colour in the HST units anchors the floating stars together and creates a pretty layout with very little effort. Adding a third colour to the corners, adds warmth to the quilt and creates large blocks of colour. You could make these corners as scrappy as you want to inject more colour into the quilt, or only add colour to two corners to create a diagonal chain between the blocks. So, layout and colour are fun to play with, now let's have a look at variations of the block design: Replacing the square corner blocks with HST units creates a gorgeous secondary pinwheel (my absolute favorite) to the quilt. The pinwheels pop in the one colour but scrappy would work as well. This is such a simple variation with lots of possibilities. Switching the orientation of the HST corner units creates a lovely woven pattern connecting the star blocks into a gorgeous quilt. This one is so fun and looks way more complicated than it actually is. Stunning! Adding a simple four patch to the corners of the block, and some sashings and cornerstones to the layout creates a wonderful secondary chain pattern linking all the star blocks together. This one is really pretty, don't you think? It would make a great scrappy pattern. Adding an extra strip of colour to the corner HST's creates a two toned secondary square pattern. This gives the quilt a modern feel and adds something fun to the design. You could really play around with this variation, and it would be quick and easy to sew. Dividing the outer HST triangles into two creates another gorgeous secondary pinwheel pattern which also floats in the quilt. I love this one! The pinwheels are smaller and softer than the other example and it doesn't overpower the Friendship Star blocks. So cute! And I love this variation as well. I'd keep each star in the same fabric but use a mix of fabrics in the corners to make the secondary pattern scrappy and fun. This one could be a fun one to try! Maybe we could do something like this for the Scrappy Sew Along I want to run later in the year. So, that's just a few variations of the Friendship Star block to inspire you to create some gorgeous quilts of your own. It's a block that shines in any setting and even in its most basic form you're guaranteed an eye catching quilt. Which one's your favorite? The block also creates a beautiful lattice pattern when made into a quilt. Scrappy or planned, the Quartered Star is a great block!

I posted about this quilt for the first time on my blog back in February 2012. It was started way before that, back in 2009. It has taken me a long time to make, but I am so thrilled with the end result and happier still to be sharing it with you!! I found this pattern in Quilt Sampler from fall/winter 2008 and I fell in love with it. I had a big bundle of fat quarters I had gotten from my mom when she was my secret sister a few years before. They were perfect for this quilt. I simply added more cream fat quarters for backgrounds as I didn't have enough. I first got discouraged while making the little 6" stars for the border. There were so many... I had already finished the 12" blocks for the centre of the quilt and those were a lot faster to piece. When I finally pulled it out again, I got those little stars finished by working on them here and there when I had a few moments to sew. It was easier to tackle a little at a a time. When those were finally done, I went out and bought the other borders. As I was sewing them on, I had a problem with the gold border. I measured the borders down the centre of the quilt, as I always do, but when I sewed them on, I had a lot of easing in to do. I wasn't sure what to do. I asked my mom for advice but I was discouraged so I put the quilt away, again... When I took it out again, I saw that it wasn't too bad and that it definitely would be okay to continue. The quilting might actually help. So I finished it and brought it over to my mom's. I love the secondary pattern that comes through on this quilt and I really wanted to accent it with the quilting. I love my mom's feathers and so I asked her to quilt feathers in the cream parts of the quilt. She asked me if I had any suggestions for the stars and I said no, I didn't care, I just knew I wanted feathers in those cream parts. Some of you may remember last June when I went to a retreat and my quilt group and I embarqued on this challenge where we each put 6 UFOs in a bag and pulled one out at random. We each put 10$ in a pot, and are suppose to have our UFO done by June this year in order to get our 10$ back. Well, this is my UFO! I am so excited it is done, and way before the deadline too! The best part is, I finally have a quilt that fits my bed properly. We got a queen size mattress back in 2006 and didn't have a queen size quilt to fit on it, until now! This block, Right Hand of Friendship, is an interesting and surprising block. It was one of the four blocks I found in my first searches for potential blocks to make for the 30-Block Exchange Group, but it took me a while before I made it. I'm not sure why. It was one of the blocks that Friend Janice found prints from my stash for me to use to make the block. This tutorial is going to look a little different than most of my tutorials. As I sit here writing it, I'm not sure how it's going to turn out either, but I hope you will stay with me. It will hopefully be a lesson in how a quilter's mind can work and lead to new discovers. There was nothing wrong with the way I was making the block, I just realized it could be made just a little bit easier or I should say faster. That's all. If anything it just shows how my crazy mind works that I would make a change when I was almost through with the block. It was actually not a big deal and I had the fabric to cut the new strips to replace the some of the squares. I started by drawing the pattern on my graph paper as I usually do and noted the pieces I needed to cut to make the pattern. I made the eight half-square-triangles (HSTs), squared and trimmed them up - "the whole 9 yards" as some people used to say. I don't know if anybody young would even know what it means. I don't know where it came from. As I placed the pieces on my design wall, I couldn't help but notice that I could have eliminated some squares by making two strips and almost had less seams to match up. I personally love the way my block turned out, but I have to be honest, since I didn't make one using the four squares, I have only the look of it online to go by, but having the print uninterrupted especially the flower print with seam lines is so pretty. You probably wouldn't notice very much if the prints were small prints. HOW TO MAKE RIGHT HAND OF FRIENDSHIP BLOCK (using three (3) different prints and 1/4" seams) CHOOSE three (3) prints - "B" - Background (white or light color) "1" - medium print "2" - dark print CUT four (4) - 4.5" squares from "B" four (4) - 3" squares from "B" (for HSTs) two (2) - 3" squares from "1" (for HSTs) two (2) - 3 " squares from "2" (for HSTs) two (2) - 2.5" squares from "1" two (2) - 2.5" squares from "2" two (2) - 2.5" x 4.5" strips from "1" two (2) - 2.5" x 4/5" strips from "2" SEPARATE out the 3" squares for the HSTs. 1) DRAW diagonal lines. 2) SEW 1/4" away from drawn line on both sides. 3) CUT on drawn line to make a total of eight (8) HSTs. 4) PRESS seams toward the dark print but away from the medium print. You will see why later when you sew the HSTs pairs together. 5) SQUARE UP and TRIM to 2.5" It was at this point that I realized I could cut four (4) strips from prints "1" and "2" and have a better "flow" than so many cut squares did. With the HSTs made, SEW the center section, PRESS, and then TRIM to 4.5" wide and 8.5" long. SEW the HSTs pairs in the center section together "nesting" the diagonal seams and then with strips. SEW 2.5" squares together above and below the center section and the HSTs that match with them. See the block from the wrong side for pressing. Not much more to do. SEW these two sections together, PRESS, and then SQUARE UP and Trim to 4.5" After SEWing the white corner squares and PRESSing, TRIM again to 4.5" wide. SEW the three long strips together. SQUARE UP and TRIM to 12.5" Well, the tutorial turned out not too weird afterall. I hope you will give the block a try. Today I'm sharing with you a fun, scrappy block called Scrappy Susannah. This block is a fantastic way to use up some scraps since all of the needed squares are either 3.5” or 4.25”. Here’s the tutorial! **edited to add: A printable version of these instructions is now available here as a PDF!** For one (12.5") block you’ll need: 8 (3.5”) print squares 4 (3.5”) white or background squares 2 (4.25”) print squares 2 (4.25”) white or background squares 1. On the two (4.25”) white squares, draw a diagonal line or fold in half and finger press. 2. Place each 4.25” white square right sides together with a 4.25” print square. Sew about 1/4” on both sides of the drawn line. 3. Cut along the drawn line to make two half square triangles (HST). 4. Open HSTs, press and trim each HST to be 3.5” 5. Layout squares as shown. 6. Using a 1/4” seam, sew squares into rows. Press each row. (I prefer to press seams open at this point) 7. Sew rows together, matching seams, and press block.
