My Lincoln quilt is on the road to the quilters! The pattern came from Barbara Brackman and so did some of the fabric. Please read about the quilt on her blog here. It has only been a little over a year since I won the pattern and fabric so I am right on my normal schedule! I opted to make my blocks 8" instead of 12, so I made a few more. My finished quilt size is approx 64x 72. I had some of this awesome Lincoln fabric from my friend Jill and couldn't think of a more appropriate quilt to use it on. And I added some homespuns, one which had this slice in it I noticed while ironing the completed backing. I used some fusible and the same fabric and fused it closed from the opposite side. I'm sending it off to Diane, Butterfly Threads Quilting to do baptist fans for me. I knew this quilt would need a simple all over pattern. I'll be adding this quilt to my "Reruns; Quilts Inspired by the Past" lecture!! I hope you all are having a terrific week.
Now with size layers. This is not a printed pattern. This is a digital download. You will receive a link sent to the email used to order. You will receive several files in letter size: How to print, the front and back of the cover, the sewing instructions, and the pattern tiled in color. You will also receive several A0 sizes files: The entire pattern in color with solid lines, and the entire pattern in black and white with dashed lines with size layers. This means you can print the pattern in just the size you want by using a copy shop or tiling the pattern yourself and printing it on your home printer using the "poster" option in Adobe Acrobat. This is a link to the Adobe help page on how to use the poster option: Split Skirt 1890S HORSEBACK RIDING, BICYCLE, OR SPORTING SKIRT, 1940S BIB SKIRT, 1930S BEACH PAJAMAS GAUCHO, PALAZZO, WIDE LEG, AND SAILOR PANTS WITH PATCH POCKETS AND OPTIONAL BIB FRONT -FALL FRONT OR ZIPPER BACK CONSTRUCTION Sewing Pattern with Sizes 6 36, All Included Laughing Moon Mercantile 150 - Ladies Split Skirt, Culottes, or Palazzo Pants: Note: Views A, B, and C have a fully functioning fall front that closes with buttons. This is correct period construction for the 1890s through the 1940s. View D does not have a fall front but has a zipper at center back for modern or easy construction. All Views have a total of eight panels. There are two optional patch pockets on the side fronts. There are two options for length: View B has a shorter length of 31 inches and Views A, C, and D have a length of 40 inches. View A is the long length with the option of a panel that can be buttoned to the front of the skirt to disguise the fact that it is actually a split skirt. Views A and Ds front waistband is at the natural waist. View Bs center front extends upward about 4 inches for a short bib. The bib is held up by suspenders that go over the shoulders and cross in the back and attach at the back waistband. View C is the longer skirt with the center front pieces extending about 10 1/2 inches for a longer bib. The bib is held up with suspenders the same as View B. View D is the longer skirt that does not have a fall front and instead has a center back opening that closes with a zipper. All fabrics for all Views are easiest to construct with a solid color because matching plaids or prints across the 8 panels would be an advanced sewing skill. Or, the panels could be of dissimilar fabrics as a design choice.

Amsterdam-based artist Diana Scherer investigates the desire for humans to control nature through her series Exercises in Root System Domestication. The project combines design, craft, and science to manipulate plants’ subterranean systems into forming mesmerizing interlocking patterns that are unlike what is found organically. To “train” the roots to grow in such complex patterns, Scherer develops underground geometric templates that the roots grow along and merge with as they grow. This intelligent behavior of plants below ground, away from humanity’s watchful eye, is another inspiration for Scherer’s work. More

Download the FREE Ombre Puff Quilt Pattern here! If you've been around for any amount of time, you might've seen my Puff Quilt that my grandmother made for me. I love this thing SO much. She used various scrap fabrics and clothing to create this very dense, yet very snuggly quilt. . . . When I look at this quilt, I see something new each time. Recycled tablecloths from the 80s, pieces of my grandfathers button-down shirts, left-over fabrics from previous quilt projects. The list goes on. Some fabrics are used multiple times within the quilt, while other fabrics are only represented once. I love looking over all of the puffs and finding all of the similarities and differences between the squares. . . . My Granny made this for me when I was 7 years old. I absolutely LOVE that she created a tag for this quilt. I also love that she referred to the quilt as a

Anna Maria Horner Improv Quilt This one of a kind quilt is completed and ready to ship to you! It may be one of my all-time favorite creations and is made in an improvisational pattern using many different fabrics from my absolute favorite designer, Anna Maria Horner, in a vibrant jewel tone and earth palette. The binding is made from coordinating fabric and is machine stitched to both sides for durability. The batting in the middle of the quilt is 100% cotton that is thin and lightweight, but also warm. This quilt is backed in a beautiful large bohemian floral print. It is quilted with white cotton thread in a freeform meandering pattern. The measurements are approximately 53 inches wide by 62 inches long. This quilt would make a lovely accent draped over a chair or the foot of a bed. It is also the perfect size for curling up with by yourself in your favorite spot with a good book and a cup of tea. It is sure to add a bit of bohemian flair or grown-up whimsy to any room. This quilt would also make a wonderful, comforting gift for that special someone in need of some cheer. All of my items are handmade with joy and love in my smoke-free home studio. Each quilt is unique and handcrafted with the utmost care to be beautiful, useful, and long-lasting. My items are made to be sturdy enough for regular use and beautiful enough to be heirlooms. You will know as soon as you see this that you have purchased a lifetime treasure! If this is a gift, I would love to gift package it for you and include a handwritten message chosen by you. Just include your desired message in a note at checkout and send it to your preferred shipping address. Care Instructions: Wash in cool water on a delicate cycle and tumble dry on low or lay flat to dry to keep your quilt looking beautiful for years to come. Iron if desired. It will become softer with each washing and is made to stand up to much use and love. If dried by machine, the quilt will shrink slightly on its first drying and will develop the gathers and puckers characteristic of handmade quilts. My ideal student is someone who is irreparably altered, broken by life’s experiences and yet yearning for transcendence. I understand yoga, not as asana (physical posture), but as a multifaceted path out of suffering.
There were several different quilt projects waiting to be worked on last week, but one of them took over and wouldn't let me stop until it was complete. This is my Blooming Onion quilt top. Blooming Onion, 60.5" x 80.5" The name of the pattern I used is actually Blue Onion by Karla Alexander of Saginaw Street Quilts. Since my version isn't blue, Blooming Onion seemed like a better choice to me. Unfortunately, the colors in the above photo are a little bit off, making the purples look much more blue than they really are. The next photo was taken about 10 minutes later, and the sun was starting to hit the quilt top. The colors in this photo are closer than the previous one. My quilt top was made entirely from batik fabrics, all pulled from my stash, except for one non-batik that I snuck into the mix. Can you tell which one it is? Here are a few closer shots for you. I've been trying to think of a better name for this quilt, but haven't come up with anything clever. Let me know if you have any suggestions. I was able to get a great stained-glass looking shot of the top half from behind as it was hanging over the deck railing. I love the way the colors glow! Still wondering about the non-batik fabric? It's the purple in the block below. This past weekend one of the guilds I belong to, Empire Quilter's, held their bi-annual show: Urban Inspirations 2011. I was lucky enough to have two quilts in the show. In the Spotlight and A Blaze of Glory. If you remember, these are the same two quilts that were juried into the Mancuso, Virginia Quilt Fest. Well, In the Spotlight won an Honorable Mention, in the Art Quilts category.... WooHoo!!! Blaze of Glory was in the Wall Quilts category... I really chuckled when I read the judges comments, because if you remember I felt kinda bewildered after reading the comments from Va Quilt Fest. But thankfully, these judges gave both compliments as well as suggestions for improvement,... like on Blaze, here are two of the comments: 1) Scale of quilting is perfect for the design of the quilt, and 2) When using flange on a quilt try to make sure it is the same size all around the quilt. Boy, I couldn't agree more and remember considering taking off the binding when I first finished the piece to try and fix the piping. Compare those two comments to the comments from the Va show: 1) Your quilting was all the same size, flattening the otherwise very daring composition., and 2) Like the use of piping. So I guess as the saying goes, take a judges comments for what they are worth and move on :-). And that is what I am going to do. I submitted both of these quilts and a third in another show at the end of April. I don't know if they will be accepted, but it will be interesting to hear what those judges have to say. Anyway, for some reason, the colors and quality of my photos from the show aren't great, so I am only going to share those that are half decent. Enjoy.... I love the beading on this piece. The bodices on the dresses as is the bottom border are hand beaded! The center applique figure is a pattern, which the quilter embellished with bead work. Believe it or not, this was a Kaffe challenge. All the skirts are made from Kaffe fabric. I find this peice visually striking and her detail is exquisite! Too bad I didn't get a close-up so you could appreciate the quilting. Sorry :-) This piece reminds me of many of my doodles, that have yet to be turned into a quilt.... oh well ... The quilting really enhances the effectiveness of this piece. Well hope you enjoyed the show! I have pictures from two more shows that I have to share... AQS Lancaster and Quilt Fest NJ. Since I am traveling, maybe the nights in the hotel room will let me catch up. Cheers!
