This is the resource my students asked me to make. They described their problem to me in class. Whenever they spoke English, they made plenty of grammar mistakes, but they were getting A's on their grammar tests. They wanted SPOKEN grammar practice, so that the grammar would become automatic for them. I made this series of worksheets, so that students would have structure to speak to each other and so that they would need to use specific grammar patterns to achieve the task. This guided practice provides enough support to weaker students and doesn't allow stronger students to take control of the conversation. In my class, this acitivity took about 2 hours, but we also reviewed present and past tense on the board a lot. Depending on your students, this packet could take more or less time. Method: Use both writing and speaking to review verb tenses. There are endless amounts of drills to study these concepts, but students most struggle with using it in spoken language correctly. Rationale: Speaking with accuracy takes a lot of practice. Most notoriously, 3rd person singular is a hurdle many students must face repeatedly. Steven Pinker (1994) argues that 3rd person singular is difficult to acquire because of the strain it causes on working memory, although it is conceptually simple. This means that we need to give students a considerable amount of time to practice accuracy in our classrooms. Research also shows that native speakers are most judgmental of mistakes that a native speaker would never make. While this reality might be unfair, it means we need to give students extra time to perfect these grammar points. Level: All levels can use this activity. Time spent on scaffolding should be adjusted for the level. Outline of materials: 1.Written activity: Review present and past tense in affirmative statements, negative statements, and questions 2.Spoken activity: Interview students 3.Written activity: Use the interviews to answer questions about classmates Want to stay in the know?
