For my son's first birthday we had a Very Hungry Caterpillar Party. (So fun!) Below are some of the simple, inexpensive party decorations that I made for this party, however, you can also use them for other themed (or non-themed) parties too. Just choose your own colours! DIY POP-HOLDER A "pop holder" is really easy to make and is a cute way to display your lolly pops, cake pops and anything else you can think of on a stick :) Here is how we made ours: Materials: Foam block (note: I used flower foam this time as I already had it at home and they were wrapped sweets and no food was touching it.. but to make another, I'd use a normal foam block as you wouldn't want any of the flower foam touching any food), Glue, Bento grass dividers (you can buy them online, eg. ebay or shops selling Bento supplies eg. Daiso, very inexpensively) Starting at the top, put a layer of grass dividers around your foam block. Once you have gone all the way around, start a new layer, slightly lower down so that it overlaps the top layer and so on until it is covered. On top I stuck down some more of the grass dividers, leaving gaps for the pop sticks to push easily into Poke in your pops and you're ready to go. Paper Lantern Table Display/Paper Lantern Caterpillar Materials: Paper lanterns (can be bought cheaply on ebay or at many discount variety shops), Fishing line, Self adhesive Hooks (I used Command Clear Decorating Clips). This was such a simple yet effective way to frame our cake and you could do the same for any other party using different coloured lanterns (without the eyes, etc.). We popped some stick-on wall hooks on the ceiling. Tied fishing line to the paper lanterns and then hung them on the hooks at the desired lengths. The total cost of the lantern caterpillar was $12. (I already had the other stuff at home so only had to purchase the lanterns) Twisted Streamer Wall Behind our table we used a simple streamer wall in the party colours. Materials: Streamers, sticky tape or blu-tac. Cut all your streamers to the right length. Stick the streamer at the top, twist and then stick at the bottom. Repeat! :) These would look fabulous in all kinds of colours and only cost about $4 in total. Balloon Door-frame/ Balloon Caterpillar Want something even more basic? Try trimming your door frames with balloons stuck around them. We made a quick little caterpillar but you could use any colours you like. These are just stuck to the wall with masking-tape. Quick and easy! You can see the rest of our Very Hungry Caterpillar Party here. Happy creating, Debs :) You can find us all over the web. Follow along via the sites below :)

Kindergarten artists at Bauer Elementary had a blast with this lesson! This project concluded our Eric Carle artist study and was a big hit, especially because clay was involved! First, we read the classic book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which the students read along with me. We then drew very large leaves - big enough to feed the hungry caterpillar, of course! Next, students used tempera cakes for painting the leaves. The following class period, students were each given a small amount of pre-colored green model magic clay (I mixed a batch of white clay with green tempera paint ahead of time). One of our learning goals was to create a sphere out of clay. The students had a lot of practice doing this during the lesson! They were given a few pom-poms at each table to use for measuring their spheres. Students lined up each sphere on wax paper and made a final red sphere for the head. The third and final day of this lesson involved cutting out their large leaves, hole punching where the caterpillar "munched," and gluing their caterpillars to their leaves! Small red pipe cleaners for antennae and sticky googly eyes (yes, they exist and are awesome!) added the final touch! Learning Goals: I can shape clay into a sphere I can recognize art by Eric Carle I can paint with care and use art tools appropriately **Reminder: See you at the Art Show! Since I didn't get to share all the tiny bit details before the party I am going to have to do it in the next few posts so bear with me as my blog gets taken over by The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Just like last year, I wanted to make a custom cupcake stand. It's a lot more simple than the Dr. Seuss one but it kind of has to be since the book illustrations are simple. These stands are really cheap to buy and super easy to customize. More details about the stand HERE. I covered each tier in white scrap book paper and used some left over dot fabric to cover the trim. A little ribbon to hide the raw edges of the bare card board and TADA a cupcake stand that perfectly matches the theme. I love it! BUT, it isn't complete without cupcake toppers. You can find that printable HERE. At the party I filled it with vanilla cupcakes and cherry tarts. Pretty and yummy! Enter your email address: Delivered by FeedBurner
When my youngest turned 1, the only cake that seemed fitting for her was The Very Hungry Caterpillar! When we handed her that cake, she ate, and she ate, and she ate! My daughter loves The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and I was pretty pleased with how her cake turned out! All you need is one bundt cake of any flavor; white icing; green, yellow and red food coloring; Hershey kisses; purple Laffy Taffy; and one chocolate chip for the mouth. Bake the cake and let cool. If you have enough time, put it in the freezer to make it easier to cut without crumbs everywhere. Cut the cake into thirds. Rearrange the cake to look like so: I rounded the ends to look more like a head/tail. Frost the cake with green for the body and red for the head. I made several different shades of green to make it look more like Eric Carle's caterpillar. Make a tiny bit of yellow icing for the outline of the eyes, and put some green food coloring in the middle. Cut 3 Hershey kisses in half and use those for the legs. Roll a purple Laffy Taffy out flat and cut out two antennae. Put a chocolate chip on for the mouth, and you have a very hungry caterpillar! Thank you Coolest Birthday Cakes for the inspiration. I'll be linking up to Tip Me Tuesday at Tip Junkie.

A Very Hungry Caterpillar offers you a timeless, classic theme that your child would most certainly love, Caterpillar Paper Lantern, polka dot for the table
Apparently, I enjoy making more work for myself when it comes to planning my kids' birthday parties. For this next one, I thought it would be cooler than cool to make papier-mache cocoons filled with goodies for the kids. I thought to hang them on sturdy branches at the party and as the kids leave, they can pick one right off the branch. I'm estimating that there will be anywhere from 6-12 kiddie guests so I plan to make a dozen of these bad boys. Very ambitious for a stay at home mom of three kids, I know, but I do so enjoy staying up late at night and into the wee hours of the morning as everyone else sleeps all cozy and bundled up in their warm, comfy beds. NOT. Despite the lack of sleep and walking around like the living dead for a month or two before the party, I still think this idea is pretty neat and so different from the usual goodie bag favors. So of course I'm gonna go for it! The theme is The Very Hungry Caterpillar after all and what better way to send the kids home than with their own cocoons filled with bug candy and a cute little butterfly? So I decided to make an initial mockup of the cocoon to see how it'd work and it was easier than I had imagined and didn't take very long either. I'm just a really impatient person so I had a difficult time waiting for the papier-mache to dry overnight. What can I say, I prefer instant gratification- don't most people? But this project is well worth it so I will hang in there just because of the effect it will create at the party. So here it is from start to finish: I blew up a water balloon which was just the right size and shape that I had in mind for a cocoon and to papier-mache, all you need is a 50/50 mixture of water and glue, newspaper strips, and foam brushes. You can probably even use green tissue paper so you wouldn't have to paint it. I didn't have any on hand at the moment so I used some acrylic paint after the balloon was dry. I also felt that the newspaper would hold together better because of the things I was going to stuff them with for the kids. I dipped the newspaper strips in the glue/water mixture first and then slapped it onto the balloon. Once I had covered most of the balloon, I could just slap a dry strip on to help soak up the excess mixture. This added a second layer to the cocoon which is necessary if I'm going to stuff it with candy. This is one messy job so make sure to layer newspapers underneath your project! I left the bottom (or would you say the top?) open and this will be where the treats will go inside. And finally, it's at least 24 hours later and I can paint it any color I want. I used a 'Palm Leaf' green on it and will probably paint the others in different shades of green so when they're hanging on the branches, it'll make for a very watercolor-esque effect. I cut the opening just a bit wider so that I can fit in a feather butterfly later. Oriental Trading Company sells a dozen colorful feather butterflies for only $6.25. You can check them out here: http://www.orientaltrading.com/feather-butterflies-a2-26_646-12-1.fltr?Ntt=butterfly. That's also where I bought those awesome realistic gummy bugs! They were bought for my son's V-day cards for his classmates. I'll post a picture of that later to show you what they're going to look like! I'm just overly excited because it's his first school Valentines exchange and it gives me another excuse to be crafty. As if this party wasn't enough for me, huh? ;-) I tried two different versions of the cocoon. One just as it is in the green paint and a second one wrapped in white cheesecloth. The one that was wrapped looked very realistic and I liked it a lot but it was not as colorful as I wanted it to be for the party. So I'm sticking with just the painted version! The cheesecloth version is very neat though and I'll keep that in mind for future educational projects with the kiddos. Isn't it adorable? Hung from white branches, these will be amazing! Once we get closer to the party and I get it all assembled, I'll update this with a new picture of the entire thing. And just in case you were wondering, the leaf note was leftover watercolor-painted paper from the caterpillar project in the previous post. I also hole-punched three holes to the top of the cocoon for the string to go through. As party favors go, these are my all-time favorites from all the parties I've planned previously! Hope you enjoyed this idea as well!
