After a few years of having this project on my 'to teach' list, I finally got around to trying paper plate weaving with my Grade 4-6 mixed class. I saw the original idea HERE on the amazing website of Cassie Stephens. I followed her direction exactly and the weavings turned out really well. I HIGHLY recommend only using Chinet brand plates as Cassie states. I tried it with a thinner paper plate and it did not hold up well. So stick with Chinet or the sturdiest brand you can find. Students started off by painting their plates using tempera. They could use any colours/patterns they wanted to. They had a lot of fun with this step and thought it was pretty cool painting on plates. They didn't fit in my drying rack so we left them on the floor to dry overnight. I collected yarn like a madwoman from garage sales and thrift stores. Then a colleague, who I was sharing yarn with, colour coded all the yarn into different plastic bags- sweet! I laid all these out onto a couple of tables so my kids could see the variety of colours and textures available. Following the directions on Cassie's blog, students wrapped their warp (I demonstrated two times, then we did it together) and then they started weaving using the same warp string. My kids have done paper weaving before and most caught on pretty quickly. Once they have had enough of one colour, they tie on a new colour and keep weaving. The kids LOVED this project and they all turned out really nice :)

Wuz happening, my wild and wacky weavers?! I hope the return to art teacherin' (if that's your bag) has been a smooth one. Personally, I find it a cruel joke to return to school the week of a full moon but, once again, the powers that be neglected to ask my opinion. When will they ever learn? So, show of hands, how many of y'all decided to go down Weaving Street this month? If you need a refresher, you can start with this paper weaving lesson then transition to this super fun straw weaving project. I just had my fourth graders start their pouch weaving and they were beside themselves with excitement. Like, they were all, "enough with the History of Weaving prezi, lady, let's weeaaavvveee." I'll be sharing that prezi with y'all later this week (still tweaking it) but you can find the complete steps for pouch weaving starting here. But let's talk Circle Loom Weaving, shall we? This lesson I do with my second grade kids but if you've never taught weaving to your students before, I recommend teaching this to third grade. Again, always start with that basic paper loom weaving as it teaches all the vocabulary and techniques making all weaving projects that follow much easier. Supplies: Chinet Plates: When plate weaving, I always use these. They are the thickest and most durable plates. I like to use the smaller size. Yarn: Any kind will do. Funky yarn is fun but only use that for the actual weaving portion. For warping, use regular yarn. A Loom Template: I have two for each of my five tables so the kids can share. Each template has 19 notches on it. Masking Tape: You'll need this to tape down the initial warp strand. And for closing the mouths of those "I Can't Do It" kids. Oh, I kid! Kinda. Last year I typed out all the steps which you can find here. I'm hoping that you'll find the video even more helpful. If you still have any questions, please ask in the comments and I'll get back to you. For those of you that don't like video, here's some pitchers and werds. Place the loom template on the painted plate. Trace and cut the 19 notches. I always encourage the kids to count and be certain they have 19 lines drawn before cutting (as some will end up with 190 which is not what you're going for). NOT GONNA LIE: Warping is the least fun part. Especially when some of the kids stop listening and get stuck on repeat: I Don't Get It. When that happens, I have everyone put everything down, we stand up, we stretch, we shake it off. Then, I tell 'em that they are going to sit back down, not touch a thing, and listen to me. Again. I have also found that peer tutoring is priceless. These kids speak the same language. Have them help each other, they communicate much better with each other I have found! Once you are beyond the warping hump (um, the whuh?), the weaving portion is much easier. That is WHEN you get beyond that initial confusion I mention in the second clip. However, if you do that little trick that I share with you, I think you'll find that the kids get it and will really take off with weaving. They love to sit on the floor and weave and chat. I let them sit with buddies, sometimes we go outside if the weather permits. It's just such a fun, relaxing project...once you are beyond the warping and initial day of learning to weave. Stick with it, you'll find that you and the kids will love the process! Granted, this weaving project does take time. However on Thursday I'm going to share with you a similar weaving project that takes have the amount of time for those of you that are limited. Until then, I do hope you found this helpful and will consider giving weaving a go! And I'd love to know, what weaving projects do you just love to do?

Kids will have fun making this paper plate sun craft during the summer season. If you are looking for a fun and simple summer craft for kids, then this is a good one. Kids get to paint the paper plate and then cut out the rays of sunshine and sunglasses (follow our template) from different colored construction paper. Then put it all together for one happy sun! We made this craft more toddler friendly by gluing the sun's rays on before painting which means toddlers don't have to wait for the paint to dry to finish the craft.
Have you ever felt like you were a circus performer trying to balance a whole bunch of plates at once? That's how I've been feeling a bit lately. These past two weeks have been quite crazy for us. Chuck turned 3! (Whoa. Where did the time go?) Hubby started work! So we're trying to figure out how to share 1 car. (Ack!) Chuck and I are trying really hard to make friends, so we're now regulars at a weekly art class and library story time. And I've been burning the late night oil completing some much-appreciated free-lance craft opportunities lately. I love making things, but I just have to get more organized I think. Oh yeah. I'm also going to partner with a great company and do a giveaway next week! *Fingers crossed that all the details work out.* So definitely tune in for that. Ok, onto today's craft. Amidst all this excitement I wanted to share this super easy paper plate Toucan Craft that Chuck and I did at home one afternoon. I know, I know, there are some awesome Toucan crafts out there (like this adorable one from I Heart Crafty Things.) But I was just so pleased by this craft because we made the bird out of 1 paper plate. Yup. That's it. So easy and simple, right? Paper Plate Toucan Craft (Note: This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for your support!) I love easy and fun crafts. This one was inspired by our repeated reading of this book. (Actually, if you're going to check that book out, you might as well check out the the whole series. We love that cat.) Ok. Here's how we made our toucan! Materials Paper Plate (1!) Scissors Pencil Paint Paint Brushes Tape Let's Make a Paper Plate Toucan! 1. Doodle your bird. (The section between the head and body is the tail.) 2. Cut it out. 3. Cover your work area and paint! (While we were painting, something kind sad happened.... Chuck and I painted our birds side by side. I was so proud of him for using his eyes to look at the bird photo and trying his best to paint matching colors on his bird. But then sometime kinda upsetting happened. When he was done, he looked at both our birds and said that he didn't like his as much as he liked mine. I felt bad about that and told him that I had more years of painting experience than he had. Plus, I painted my entire bird in. In the future, I might not paint side by side next to him anymore.... I don't want him to feel bad about his artwork.... but then again, I like painting with him. I don't know. What are your thoughts? Have you faced this with your kids?) Ok. So I still think it's super cool that it fits together like a paper plate! And here are both of our finished birds. I love how Chuck noticed all of those colors on the beak. 4. Tape on the tail! Then, enjoy your bird! Ok. That's it. I'm off to wake Chuck up from his nap. Looking for a sweet and simple craft that's easy for children to make? Why not give this adorable paper plate baby unicorn a try? Great for all ages!
We have been getting our house ready for Christmas with lots of pretty lights. We're not quite ready to put up the tree but no doubt by December 1st our children will be busting to decide 'who gets to put the angel up'. It is a task that is receptively shared each year - to put the final piece in its treetop position - and if I recall correctly we may have snapped a photo of the moment last year to avoid any blurred memories and 'it's myyyyyyyy turn' squabbles this year. Stay tuned. We did however, this weekend, partake in some Christmas craft and made a pretty paper plate angel. We also un-boxed all our Christmas themed story books and returned them to the home library shelf. I find packing these away each year, reserving them for Nov-Dec only, makes them extra special. We re-read The Christmas Angel (Amazon Affiliate Link) - one of my daughter's first Christmas picture books and one that is lovely for school if you are in the position to teach the Christian holiday. Comprehension Questions while/after Reading After and during the reading of this story, ask your little learners some questions to encourage a deeper comprehension of the text. p.3 - The angels were excited - recall a time when you felt excited. p.5 - The little angel wanted to make the baby a present. What might he give? Make a prediction. p.7 - The little angel was warned not to go too close to the edge of the clouds. Why? p.7 - What does the word 'journey' mean? p.14 - The angel fell into the branch of an old tree. What caused this? p.16 - Who do you think these 3 men are? Why? p.20 - Identify the simile on this page. What would be another simile to describe being tumbled about. p.25 - What is a 'staff'? What is a 'manger'? If you would like to make an angel like ours, here's how we did it: How to Make a Paper Plate Angel You will need: small paper plate yellow paint or crayon 2 small paper doilies, each folded in half small circle of card stock for the face wool / yarn for the hair a few sequins craft glue / PVA glue stapler (optional) To make: Color or paint the paper plate yellow Fold the paper plate sides in at a slight angle - so they just overlap and form the angel's gown. Secure with a dab of glue (or staple) Glue the folded wings behind the gown. Glue the face onto the top of the dress. Create the hair by looping a medium length of yarn around 3 fingers and then tying in the middle with a short piece. Glue the hair to the top of the face. Decorate with a sweet face and sequins on the gown. Thanks so much for stopping by, we do hope to bring you some fun new crafts and activities in the coming weeks!
