Definition of Paper Piecing - Quilting technique in which a design is printed onto paper and fabric pieces are stitched together on the paper for accuracy. I'm not very experienced at paper piecing. I have a tendency to not use a large enough piece of fabric to cover the foundation area I'm working with! So when Karen Neary from Sew Karen-ly Created was asking for pattern testers on a pattern using a New York Beauty block I volunteered. I can't show you the completed project yet, but it turned out great!!! It's amazing to me how a block that starts out with this component, ends up looking like this?

The template I used (Block 7) can be found and downloaded along with nine other blocks here: Free New York Beauty Block Patterns. I feel like I'm still just getting my feet wet in terms of paper piecing, so if you've never paper pieced before, I'd recommend starting with something small to get the basics of it, like this simple square from Quilter's Cache! Definitely check out Faith's star tutorial too, her photos are awesome! I hope you'll try this out! This block honestly is way easier than it looks! Everything is pieced together in sections, and paper piecing makes it a lot easier to be accurate. I won't lie, I was a little afraid of this block when I first started, but quickly realized it's doable! It even came together quickly too, once I got into a groove! So, let's get started! Sewing Level: Advanced Materials for one block: - (8) 5"x1.5" pink prints - (5) 2.5"x1.5" navy prints - (9) 5"x2" gray prints - (4) 2.5"x2" gray prints - (1) 3"x3" square of yellow print - (1) 9"x9" square of background fabric - Template found here. Tools: - Paper (I use Carol Doak's Foundation Paper) - Acrylic ruler - Add a Quarter Inch ruler (optional) - Rotary cutting tools - Note card - Pins - Scissors - Rotary Cutter/Mat *I like to use foundation paper over regular printer paper because it is slightly see-through, so you can see the printed pattern from the other side! As you can see above, mine cut a bit of the corners off, so I just drew them in with pencil! Before you start sewing, set your stitch length down a few notches. My machine's stitch is 2.4 normally and I set it down to 2.0 or smaller. This makes it easier to tear off the paper! New York Beauty Quilt Along, a photo by jenib320 on Flickr. Place them navy piece on the back side of the paper, over top of the shape labeled "1". Make sure it overlaps 1/4" past the line between "1" and 2". Carefully take your pieces to the machine. Stitch on line between "1" and "2". Finger press or iron the piece open. New York Beauty Quilt Along, a photo by jenib320 on Flickr. Using a ruler, measure 1/4" and trim the excess. *This is where the add a quarter inch ruler really comes in handy. It has a groove on the edge that fits nicely up against the fold, so it doesn't slide around when you're cutting! New York Beauty Quilt Along, a photo by jenib320 on Flickr. 6. Grab the next navy piece and line it up, right sides down, against where you just trimmed. Center it so that it overlaps both side edges. 7. Stitch along the line between shapes "3" and "4". New York Beauty Quilt Along, a photo by jenib320 on Flickr. 10. Next, piece the larger arc in the same manner, using the gray 5"x2" pieces and pink 5"x1.5" pieces, Starting with a gray piece. I choose to use my background template on the fold, cutting out one piece. I did not cut off the extra seam allowance, so that I'd have some extra wiggle room, but do whatever you feel most comfortable with! 12. Starting with your large arc and background piece, match up the center creases, and slowly pin across the arc. Stitch slowly with a scant 1/4" seam allowance. Press towards the background piece. Pin the edges together, then pin in between, easing the pieces together. Stitch slowly with a scant 1/4" seam allowance. Press towards the center piece. Pin the edges together, then pin in between, easing the pieces together. Stitch slowly with a scant 1/4" seam allowance. Press towards the smaller arc piece. If you're making four blocks, I'd recommend waiting to trim until you've finished them all, that way if any one is a little scant, you can make sure they all trim to the same size! :) Do you want to know a little secret? This New York Beauty Quilt set of 4 quilting block patterns can be made with expert precision by implementing the paper piecing foundation pattern that we present here. The patterns included in this set are: New York Sunburst Beauty Overlapping Triangles Beauty 2 Radiant Beauty Rick Rack Beauty 2 Scraps can be used or you can use materials that we have suggested. Our suggested material amounts are an over-exaggeration, so if you make a mistake you always have more fabric to work with. Our pattern makes 10x10 inch quilting blocks with a 1/4 inch grace allowance. This way you can make any size quilt you desire within 10 inch increments of your desired result. Our directions will walk you through the whole process of using our patterns to make beautiful foundation quilting blocks. I have been looking for the next project I want to work on...long term. And I think I have decided to do a New York Beauty quilt. Like the Pickle-dish, this is one I have always loved....so I found a few designs I like and did some paper piecing using freezer paper.... I also thought I would do a little mini-tutorial on the freezer paper technique....at least how I do it :) Begin with your design and trace it onto the non-shiny side of the freezer paper. Each quadrant of my design is separated into 5 parts and 3 of those will be paper pieced....the center circle I have decided to applique so I don't have a pieced center. slide your design under the freezer paper and trace Score the lines of your design with the back of your seam ripper....don't cut all the way through the paper...just score it to make it easier to fold the paper back. Next cut your fabric so it is at least 1/4 inch larger than your design lines....I am using two fabrics and I will work on the first segment of my design {first triangle working from left to right} Place a piece of fabric under the freezer paper template...the shiny side will be placed next to the wrong side of your fabric. my fabric is placed under and extending beyond the lines of the first segment of my design Using a dry hot iron press the freezer paper so it adheres to the first piece of fabric....then carefully peel back the paper so it is folded on the line of the first triangle.... Take your acrylic ruler and place it so the fold of the paper is lined up with the quarter inch mark on the ruler. Slice the excess fabric so that a quarter inch seam allowance is left extending beyond the paper fold.... Now take your second fabric and place it so the right sides are facing and the raw edges along this quarter inch seam are lined up.... Stitch just along the side of the folded paper....be careful not to sew on the paper....just use the fold as a guide and stitch right next to it {I shorten my stitch length to 1.8} Then unfold the second fabric...finger press along the seam....and then press the freezer paper again over the second fabric. Now you will be working on the second segment. Once the freezer paper is pressed onto the second segment...gently peel back the paper and fold along the next line.....again slice off the excess to leave the quarter inch seam allowance. second fabric is unfolded...press the freezer paper again to cover the second segment and the second fabric slice off the excess fabric leaving the quarter inch seam allowance Continue in the same manner until you have filled in every segment of your design... then trim around the outside of your design. My pattern has the quarter inch seam allowance all the way around the outside so I did not need to leave a quarter inch seam allowance. I trimmed along the outside edge of the paper pattern. Carefully peel the freezer paper off of your pieced arc. trimmed pieced arc I have not sewn my quadrants together or my center circle....I think I will use a dotted fabric for the background....so I will be looking for the right background fabric.... I am not sure I will use this background....I need to audition other dots.... I very much enjoy this type of piecing...even though it can be a bit tedious. Hope you are having a great Friday! mary

This is Ulrike’s stunning New York Beauty quilt and she said it took her 10 years to complete this top! It is made with all batik fabrics and batik backing. The blocks and border were all paper pieced and I love the blocks put on an angle creating stars in the sashing. The whole quilt is stitched in the ditch which took the most work and then I rolled it back and added the quilting designs. I did the same feather in the outer curve in all the blocks, added pebbles to some of the arcs and loops to others. It took me a while to figure out what to quilt in the sashing but finally came up with the petal curl design the fit in the space nicely. I have lots of pictures to share! The batting is Quilters Dream Blend and the threads are So Fine. When I posted a picture of the quilt top last week I had a lot of questions about stitch in the ditch and what threads so here is what I used. So Fine #456 is the magic gray green that I used on all the blocks, it blended very well with all the colors. I matched thread with the two purples in the sashing for that design element as I wanted the thread to blend in on the sashing. I also used a light beige for SID around the outer border spikes. When I stitch in the ditch I don’t always stitch in the ditch side. Depending on the thread I’m using and the final look I’m going for I sometimes will stitch on the high side of the ditch to keep the thread in the same color fabric as the thread. I did this in the outer border in the light beige fabrics as I wanted the colour spikes to really pop! But in the blocks themselves I just stitched on the low side of the ditch as I was quilting across so many colors it didn’t matter what color of fabric I was stitching in. Here is a better look at the thread I used. There were a few spots on the blocks where I switched to the light beige thread as the blocks had a very light background. And in these blocks I stitch on the high and low side so I stayed in the light fabric like I did in the outer border. So for me there is no hard fast rule about stitching in the ditch, I do what looks right to my eye. Also in this next picture you can see where I strayed from the side I was on and stitched in the darker colour, this happens and I don’t panic about it because when you look at the quilt as a whole you never see that! There were only a few times on this quilt where I was not happy with my stitching and picked out a line or two. So don’t stress too much when your stitching in the ditch, just take your time and don’t be over critical of it.
After leaping around the line-up, we return to Block #2, but instead of the more traditional sew-it-in-rip-it-out, it’s made with freezer paper. Apparently this method is the hot new tutorial…

Hello A quilt I've always wanted to make is a New York Beauty and this week I decided to make a start. These blocks were designed by Donna Duquette and I found them as a free download on the internet. There are lots of free patterns and tutorials out there. The main fabrics I'm using for this quilt are a selection of 18 fat quarters called Stonehenge by Linda Ludovico. They are gorgeous and bright and I'm mixing them with batiks. I like doing the foundation piecing, that's good but I am not so keen on the curved seams. I am trying to be as neat and precise as I can but kept chopping some points off. I don't know how many times I sewed and unpicked some of the seams in this block. Still not happy with it so decided to switch fabrics and PRACTICE. This is a block before its sewn together. Another one done - curved seams going ok now. My DH and DD did not like these blocks - say they are too busy but I rather like that. A few more and I think they would make a pretty quilt for a little girl. In the same pile as the New York beauty patterns I found these foundation pieced Mariners Compass patterns. I had printed them ages ago. They are from Quilting on the Square but I can't remember if it was a blog or a website I got them from and I cannot find it again to share the link with you. I used Blocks 1,2, and 3 but can only find the links to these blocks: Block 1 Block 12 I used my Stonhenge fabrics for these and I love how they turned out. I may mix these 12" blocks with the 8" New York beauty blocks - undecided yet - think I will just see what happens as I go along. Playing with layouts now.... I'll be at Material Obsession for a couple of dates early next year which is really exciting for me. I’ve always wanted to make a New York Beauty quilt. It’s one of my bucket-list quilts. My other bucket-list quilt is a Double Wedding Ring quilt. I watched a few tutorials on YouTube and found this series by OnPoint-TV & Quilting with Nancy to be excellent. I've subscribed to her channel as there is a lot to watch. I watched the series of videos about making the New York Beauty (above) and then I watched Nancy explain how to design and manipulate blocks on Electric Quilt 8. I sat down with EQ8 and designed a fairly simple NY Beauty block. I followed all of Nancy's advice including adding 1/8" at the edge sections of the block and I even made freezer paper templates to cut the arcs around the foundation paper piecing arc. I'm very glad that I took her advice about the extra 1/8" and scant 1/4" seams. With minimal trimming (using my 9 1/2" square ruler) the block turned out great. I used Island Batik fabrics to make this sample from the Lace & Grace range which was the range I used in my February Around the Garden Row Quilt challenge. One of the great things about using batik fabrics is that you can use either side of the fabric. Back and front of the fabric, both work perfectly well. I don't love foundation paper piecing, but look at these pointy points. Now that I've made a block sample, I feel ready to tackle a quilt. I have my fabric stack all ready to cut into, but I just need to decide on the design. Tell me, do you like NY Beauty Quilts that have the same block repeated or lots of different blocks? I've been looking at Pinterest, which is a wonderful site for inspiration... possibly too much inspiration as I'm having a hard time deciding what way to go. Hah!
