Kara Walker operates on the premise that when you make history truly visible, both your own and that of your people or nation, there exists a challenge to show all of it, the unholy mix, the conscious knowledge and the subconscious reaction, the traumatic history and the trauma it has created, the unprocessed and the unprocessable.

Not sure when my obsession with installation art started but it's been unrelenting by holding my attention in a serious way for at least the past year. I honestly feel like if I didn't love my job (right now) so much and feel like I really was answering a divine calling to do it, I would easily dive head first into the world of installation art and try any carve out my place in it. I first stumbled upon this project idea on Princentenol under the name Tint and Shade Ceiling Hanging. I LOVED the idea of doing it but felt like it needed a little bit of something more to it so I mentally bookmarked it and then just forgot about it. Time passed, I got bored with some of what I had been doing in the 3D Design class, and a dug it back up in an effort to indulge my installation art obsession. The learning objectives behind this project are multi-layered and touch upon so many great things... Technique of painting evenly and with careful brush strokes Experiencing tempera paint and understanding why it is so awesome Color mixing, tinting, and shading Understanding and creating geometric and organic shapes Learning how art can be used to transform and reshape space For as simple as the project was, it was also pretty challenging. While I normally do lessons/projects that last about 2-3 weeks, this one easily took five total. It really required the kids to stay on task and stay the course even when it seemed like the work was becoming monotonous and redundant - because, seriously? It was once it came time to draw and cut each of the 144 shapes that were needed to make up the 72 pairs of shapes that would hang off of each of their rings. Since I share a classroom with my part-time colleague, storage is ALWAYS a challenge and this project didn't help at all. Thankfully, the issue was attended to beautifully by hanging things from the ceiling up by the front of the classroom/teacher's podium - this was to help keep students from wanting to bat at them while they moved around the class. The whole installation is mostly hung up right now with the exception of a few yellow pairings that I have to finish up quickly and get hung up because few people wanted to take on the task of that color. The most popular colors were red, orange, and blue overall. Kind of surprised me that orange was so popular but it's my favorite so I was delighted that so many of the kids wanted to do it. Here is what our exhibit "The Ombre Experience" looks like hung up in the student gallery hallway... I feel like (for the most part) I'm pretty pleased with it. We've gotten a lot of really great feedback on it and though I would have liked it to have filled out the space a little more, what it does look like really works for the space.
Please follow the instructions while installing the decal: Step 1 Clean the application area with alcohol or soap & water. Step 2 Using a squeegee or credit card, press firmly on the decal to ensure that the decal sticks to the application transfer paper. Step 3 Peel the paper backing away from the decal very slowly. Step 4 Apply decal to cleaned area, pressing firmly using squeegee or credit card. Step 5 Slowly remove transfer paper. Be careful not to pull the decal away from the cleaned area. If decal starts to pull off, repeat step 4. Step 6 Admire your freaking sweet decal.
Relief sculpture is an art form that is midway between painting and sculpture in the round. It is a process in which the subject stands out or projects a surface from the background. The surface can be several levels including high relief (deep or almost in the round) or low relief (shallow) or anywhere in between. To create their relief sculptures, seventh graders first learned about the difference between shape and form. A shape is two-dimensional (it has height and width) whereas a form is three-dimensional (it not only has height and width but also depth). Students experimented creating forms out of basic paper shapes by rolling, bending, folding and gluing them. After trying a variety of forms, students chose their favorite and created sixty variations of that form. Students then considered space and balance to position their forms into their final sculptural arrangement. These look awesome on display as they protrude from the wall- it's hard to really see the depth in these individual photos, but the shadows and dimension are super cool up close! *UPDATED - 1/22/15* This bundle contains: - Arms Template (.pdf, .jpg, AND .psd file versions!) - Head Template (.pdf, .jpg, AND .psd file versions!) - Body Template (.pdf, .jpg, AND .psd file versions!) - Project Example Photo (.jpg AND .pdf files) There are three different templates included in this bundle to design, cut, and glue your own cube-like figure sculpture. One page is the head, one is the body, and the third page has two separate arm templates. Final assembled sculptures will be approximately 5" tall, 3" wide, and 3" deep. When I taught this project, I used the templates with graphite paper and had students trace them onto colored construction paper to create the pieces. The template has tabs to indicate where the paper should be glued together. (You could also design directly on the printouts and then cut/glue the project together, but the quality is not as nice, in my opinion.) Also included in this bundle is my a photo file of my example/sample projects (.jpg AND .pdf photo file), which you can use to show students design possibilities, or as your own reference for assembling the final sculptures. This is a great simple paper sculpture project to use as part of a larger unit on sculpture or DIY vinyl art toys, or even as an introductory "self-portrait" lesson. Imagine a whole group of these figures on display in a case or on a bookshelf! I am happy to answer questions or help you to use any of the resources in the "Make Art Be Happy" store - just let me know!
