These are the steps that I did with my kids. There may be different ways of doing this, but this is what works for me. The first step is to fold your paper in half, down the long side ( we say hotdog fold). Then with a pencil write your name sitting on the fold, in cursive. Then, darken the name by tracing 2-3 times. Fold the name to the inside, make sure the name is facing down. Usually, you can see the name through the paper, which will help with the next step. With the cap of a marker, rub over the name. If you can see through the paper, you can rub directly on the name. Check to see if transfer is happening, if not check these things. 1. Is the name dark enough 2. Is the name on the inside (Yep, it happens) 3. Is the name facing down 4. If the following is done, you may not be holding the marker at the right angle. Once the name is transferred, you can start adding in details (eyes, nose, ears, hands, feet, lashes and so on) Remember it is a creature, so it can have 6 eyes, 2 mouths, and hands. Anything goes! This part is done just like the name. Draw on the original side and transfer for symmetry. Trace with sharpie and erase any left over pencil markings. Add color!

It's been hot lately. Like melt your face off hot. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating, but sometimes it's nice to do an indoor activity to at least let the sweat dry. This one is simple and loads of fun. If you're hearing, "I'm sooooooooooo bored" this summer, making indoor origami flying discs might just be the cure. Supplies for 1 disc 8 two-inch square pieces of paper (plain office paper or heavyweight card stock) Tape How to Make It Fold each 2-inch by 2-inch square of paper corner to corner so you now have 8 triangles. Now fold one corner of each triangle down; look at the picture below for guidance. Make sure all the origami pieces are facing up, with the folded flap on top. Slip the pointed corner of one piece into the folded flap of another. Continue doing this until you're able to tuck the last piece in place. Add tape over each triangle tip for added stability. Gently bend the outer edges of the disc down for increased aerodynamics. Fling it like a frisbee and watch it fly and curve in the air. These are remarkably good flyers! This awesome project came from the book Make: Easy 1-2-3 Projects. Check it out!

Coming off of their autumn-y landscapes dotted with Aspen trees, fifth graders have moved on to seascapes. I've done seascapes for a few years but decided to mix things up this year, combining elements of projects I found here and here. Like that second plan suggests, I use this project to show the kids the work of Winslow Homer. The more I study his realistic oil paintings, the more I appreciate both his talent and dedication to the subject of the sea. This year, the kids looked at some of Homer's watercolors and oils before starting their own. Everyone chose a tempera paint color palette with which to cover a 12x18" sheet of white paper. They loved blending their colors and experimenting with brush techniques to achieve smooth waters or crashing seas. They added some sgraffito if desired. On this day, art class was sponsored by the letter M. For MESSY. On day two, all students painted another 12x18" sheet--this time, watercolors on watercolor paper--for the sky. This day was sponsored by the color blue, a.k.a. an excuse to wear my new blue pants. The 'ocean paper' was torn horizontally to create white waves and surf--so cool! These pieces were layered onto the watercolor paper to make sky and water meet. Lastly, we went over a few origami boat folds. Kiddos had lots of paper and sizes from which to choose. I required them to use differing sizes to demonstrate perspective. I pre-taught my Art Enrichment kids how to do the folds so they could teach the others. Pile-up in the marina! My fifth graders really enjoyed this mixed media approach--when I hear, "this is so cool!" and "woooow!" I want to do a happy little dance (and sometimes my blue pants and I indulge). Some kiddos really went wild with this. I had a few kids 'sink' their ships by ripping them in half, and others made little "S.O.S." flags or named their boats. One of my outside-the-box thinkers asked to use a black Sharpie to draw on the sky; I asked if she'd prefer to paint on clouds but she said she'd like to use the black marker. I said yes and she ended up with this rockin' result, graphic and bold like the rest of the artworks I've seen from her: Gosh I love these kids.
