How to make continuous bias tape? Do you wish there was an easier way to make bias tape without having to cut lots of strips and sew them together?
The Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs, where Roger the muscly kangaroo lives, just reopened and he’s proving to be popular with visitors once again.
Today was Presidents Day. Unlike some lucky teachers who got to stay home, I had to go to work today. We had a full day of workshops. On top of that, we ended up getting 5+ inches of snow this morning. It started in the morning and it fell hard and fast! My first part of the morning was spent learning how to do my web page. I loved that we were walked through...step by step...how to set up our pages. We then had to go our home school to work with our PLC's on goals that we set. I am excited that I will be doing Reader's Theater with my group. I found these fun plays from Kristin at A Teeny Tiny Teacher. I am so excited to use them. After lunch, we spent the rest of the day at another school in our district. We listened to Steve Dunn talk about writing. My head is spinning with all the great ideas that he gave us. I loved that he gave us examples and ideas of how to teach writing in our classroom. I can't wait to go back to my classroom and try some of the things that he shared with us. The afternoon went by so fast! Tonight I created some different writing papers that I want to use during Writer's Workshop based off the ideas that he gave us. This paper is meant to be used for kindergartners who are in their beginning stages of writing. They will draw a picture in the box and then write their sentences below it. This paper is meant to be used for kindergartners in January and first graders throughout the school year. The page on the left side of their journal will have the box on it. That way when they are done writing, they can go to the next page and still see their picture. Finally, this paper is meant for first graders and higher. Students will draw pictures of what happens in the beginning, middle and end of their stories. The boxes are on the left side of their journal and the extra lines are on the right side so they can still see the pictures. You can find all these papers HERE. I hope you find them helpful to you. I hope you had a great day! Sara

I'm so VERY excited to present my very first guest blogger on MiniMatisse. I met Mark Rode a couple months back at a training and we share our social media information with each other. I have been so impressed with Mark's Instagram that I asked if he would write a blog post about this amazing project. Mark is an Elementary Art Teacher at Oxbow Creek Elementary in Champlin Minnesota. He explains that his inspiration came from another teacher in West Australia, Ann Farrell. I'm a fan of her work as well! Please be sure to check out her blog, Use Your Coloured Pencils. Mark maintains an amazing Instagram account, @oxbow_creek_elementary_art. He is also active on Twitter, follow him @oxbowart. Here is what Mark had to say about this captivating project. I taught this project to my first graders to kick off their unit on form. It took two 60 minute classes, but next year I may stretch it to three, as it was difficult for some to finish on time. There are so many great books on dinosaurs too, and having time on the third day for reflection would be ideal. Nevertheless, I felt like this project was a great way to begin working in three dimensions, as it let students figure out how to make something stand up and occupy real space with familiar materials and subject matter (who doesn’t like dinosaurs?). After teaching this lesson, I had multiple students bring in other versions to share that they had made at home, as well as some other paper sculptures, which I felt was a good sign. When I was a kid, I was obsessed with dinosaurs. I even wanted to be a paleontologist when I grew up! There is still a big part of me that gets excited about them, so it was really fun to share this excitement with the kids. Of course, in every first-grade class, there are always a few dinosaur experts who love to share their unique knowledge on this subject as well, so I introduced the project by displaying pictures of a variety of dinosaurs and facilitated a lively discussion. We talked about different characteristics that we noticed, as well as compared and contrasted the different types. I then told them that they would be making a dinosaur sculpture, and demonstrated how to begin. I told them that they were going to get two pieces of tagboard, one wide and one narrower. They would also get a sharpie marker and a stencil for the body shape and legs (these were made from brown tag. I usually don’t use stencils, but I made an exception with this step, as the success of the final work was heavily contingent on getting these shapes right…). I told the students to trace the body shape on the large sheet of tagboard, right in the middle. After that, they added the other features (neck, head, tail, horns, designs, texture, etc.). I then told them to trace the leg stencil on the smaller sheet. Depending on the type of dinosaur, they would either do this once or twice (an Allosaurus walks on two legs vs. a Brachiosaurus that walks on four). After adding details, I told them they had to cut out the dinosaur and the legs. They then had to flip the body over and add details on the other side (it is important that they cut out first before flipping). Finally, they added color on all sides with a marker. I told them that scientists don’t know for certain what color the dinosaurs were, so it was really up to them to color their dinosaur how they thought it would have looked. This, I believe, gave them more creative agency, and I think, in the end, they looked more interesting because of it. On day two, we reviewed the steps. I then said that I would give them a piece of matboard for the base and that they had to draw the setting for their dinosaur (bird’s eye view). They also had to make a few slits (one on the top of each leg and one or two on the bottom of the dinosaur). I then showed how to make it stand by carefully connecting the slits together. In order for it to be sturdy, it does require some wiggling and finessing. When they got to this point, I told them that it was really important for them to try to get it to stand up. This was challenging for many, but it was good for them to work through it and problem solve. I also stressed the importance of helping each other out. Once they got the legs on, I added hot glue to the bottom of the feet and glued the dino to the base. Most students were able to get it to stand, but there were a few that needed some assistance from me. At the end of the class, we all had our dinosaurs on one table and it was such a pleasure to see them all together! This project was predominantly product based, but also gave a lot of room for creative decision-making. The goal was to have the dinosaur three-dimensional. The main concept was form, although we also talked a lot about shapes, lines, and textures. Here are some of the project samples that Mark was so generous to share with us. For more images of this project and so many other amazing projects, please be sure to follow Mark on Instagram @Oxbow_creek_elementary_art.
Hi…my name is Jessica and I am addicted to using Cantoni - my current favorite font crush! *wink* Ok…so you already knew that. It's no secret around here that I've been using this fabulous font in almost every design or project or Instagram post lately. I love that it can be simultaneously fancy, fun, casual and whimsical. I really cannot get enough. LOVE it!! So as you might imagine…when Debi Sementelli, the artist behind the creation of this beautiful font, reached out to me about wanting to do a blog post about some of the ways I've been using it, I. was. beyond. flattered. Check out her post right here... Coincidentally, through conversations with Debi I was happy to discover my favorite app by Rhonna Designs has commissioned Debi for the use of the Cantoni font in a new soon-to-be-released update. I'm SO excited about that and thought it was so amazing to think two of my favorite things will be merging together! Can you say match-made-in-heaven!? I really enjoyed conversing with Debi through emails and learned that for her, the process of designing a font takes about 6 months. Wow! I had no idea!! That's a lot of love, time and effort put into creating a beautiful font like Cantoni and it makes me adore it all the more!! I also learned how devastating it can be to a professional lettering artist like Debi for people to illegally share her fonts. One of Debi's fonts has been shared illegally over 2500 times. Yikes!! I share all of this because I think it's important to remember that there's a face behind your favorite font. There's a person, just like you and me, who's working hard to get their art/work seen by the world…and to be justly compensated for it. I'm so happy to have been able to connect with Debi directly! She's a font celebrity in my little world of graphic design and I'm truly flattered to have my projects featured on her blog! Thanks again for the feature Debi!! If you want to purchase the Cantoni font too...GO HERE! Or check out the NEW Belluccia Bold font by Debi Sementelli…released just last week! KEEPiNG iT REAL Super Bowl last night….right? "Woo. Hoo." (said with sarcastic enthusiasm). I'd love to be able to say I'm a huge football fan like the rest of the world seems to be… but I'm just NOT. I'm annoyed by it much of the time I think mostly because I live with someone who's a complete diehard fan and allows it to dictate much of his schedule/activites/time with family during football season. (and apparently the rest of the world is pretty much the same way). SEE UPDATE BELOW! I, however, am one of those people who's more about the food, commercials and the half-time show. With that said, I do have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the performance from Bruno Mars last night. He is a true entertainer and the collaboration with the Red Hot Chili Peppers was AMAZING! I wasn't expecting to have my socks blown off. Did you all feel the same? UPDATE: J had his feelings hurt when he read over the part of the post where I'm annoyed by his addiction to football. So…to be fair…let me just tell you a few of the wonderful things I love about him: - He actually reads my blog posts. *wink* - He's 100% dedicated to being the best dad ever…and I have to say…he's pretty dang awesome. I wouldn't describe him as the cuddly teddy bear type but as abrasive as he can sometimes be he has won over Ella's heart. He has somehow managed to find the perfect balance between effective parenting and nurturing. I personally am still working on this as I tend to be a "softy". - J does the grocery shopping for our household. He insists on it. (mainly because he wants to control the finances plus he says the bill always goes up when I go). Regardless of the motivation behind WHY he goes…the fact is…he goes. Every. Single. Saturday. He knows the grocery store personnel on a first-name basis and he takes Ella WITH him. They've been tag-team shopping ever since she was old enough to sit on her own in the cart. In fact, to be completely honest, the grocery store people know Ella by name and on the off-chance that I go with J and Ella I receive two different looks/reactions from most of the grocery store clerks: 1. Surprised to know Ella really has a mom and not just a dad. 2. Disgusted that I never do the shopping myself…how dare I pass along that task to J.
