I had the great pleasure to join my friend and natural dye expert, Clarabella for her indigo dye workshop today. It was fun to play without any specific outcomes and enjoyed the rich variety of shades and marks produced. Claire's generosity and expertise inspired us all to be creative and I went away giddy with the possibilities. I shall store some thoughts up for the future and see where and how they surface. I will share some more images in a few days when I start to open fabrics out.

antique Chinese Art Deco rug with Pictorial design. This hand knotted wool antique Chinese Art Deco pictorial rug features a variety of traditional Chinese motifs spread across an abrashed gray field. Floating in the center of the field, a large pagoda and accompanying small buildings sit beneath a blossoming peach tree. Additional pagodas decorate each corner of the field. Two stags appear at either end of the center pagoda, each bearing a flowering vase upon their backs. Deer are considered to be a symbol of longevity and prosperity. In ancient times they were believed to be the only creature able to find the elusive lingzhi fungus, which was thought to grant immortality to those who consumed it. The fantastic border features a number of bird species, large chrysanthemums and other blossoms. Lovely peacocks adorn the corners of the border and are thought to represent dignity and beauty. Paradise flycatchers perched upon branches decorate the sides of the piece. In Mandarin the word for the flycatcher is “shou dai niao,” meaning “ribbon bird.” Since “shou” is a homonym for the word for longevity, the bird is a symbol of long life. Cranes and pairs of mandarin ducks pictured amongst chrysanthemums decorate each ends of the piece. As with the deer and paradise flycatchers, both cranes and chrysanthemums are symbols of longevity. Mandarin ducks are often pictured in pairs, as they are here, and are an emblem of conjugal fidelity. The lovely color palette, comprised mostly of shades of gray with blue, deep red, and tan accents, is elegant and peaceful. With its depth of meaning, soft hues, and overall sense of harmony, this antique Chinese Art Deco pictorial rug would be a wonderful addition to nearly any interior. It is rendered in variegated shades of gray, stone gray, dove gray, oyster gray, heather gray, taupe, oatmeal, ecru, sand, beige, khaki, tan, fawn, sienna, cerulean, Prussian blue, sky blue, true blue, navy blue, cobalt, indigo, ink blue, royal blue, maroon, wine, brick red, scarlet red, ivory, cream, vanilla, pale yellow, lichen, and other accent colors. It would be perfect for a small space, reading nook, master bathroom, grand foyer, designer entry, study, studio, den, walk-in closet, stair landing, alcove, mudroom, entryway, bedroom, private library, private chambers, living room, front room, wine cellar, conservatory, drawing room, trophy room, game room, music room, listening room, or hotel lobby. Iconic in its styling, this rug would be well-suited for a wide range of interior styles less
Distressed Vintage Turkish Sivas Rug with Postmodern Romantic Style. This hand knotted wool distressed vintage Turkish Sivas rug features a polychromatic all-over floral pattern. A bouquet of four large blossoms in the center of the composition is nestled amongst a sea of multi-colored floral motifs. Each flower of the field is broken into eight segmented lobes in alternating colors. The effect is a sense of petals scattered about the ground. Gentle waves of abrash and variations in wear give the lively design added visual interest and texture. The polychromatic color scheme is stylish and sophisticated; the gorgeous hues have mellowed over the years into a rich, but soft palette. With its modern approach, soft hues, and just the right amount of age wear, this Zeki Muren-inspired distressed vintage Turkish Sivas rug would bring a sense of rustic charm to any space. This piece has been rendered in variegated shades of pistachio, mint, sage, celadon, olive, hunter green, Kelly green, forest green, bottle green, avocado, army green, cerulean, blue, royal blue, navy blue, ink blue, cobalt, indigo, ocher, gold, apricot, tangerine, tan, beige, ecru, sand, almond, light brown, chamois, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, umber, ruby red, scarlet red, vermilion, brick red, rust, maroon, wine, burgundy, eggplant, mauve, lavender, pink, rose, and other muted hues. It would be perfect for a living room, dining room, bedroom, library, den, family room, great room, music room, billiards room, reception room, home office, study, theatre room, state room, lobby, or lounge area. antique Chinese Baotou rug with Art Deco style. This hand-knotted wool antique Chinese Baotou rug features a rounded fretwork medallion enclosing a center rosette floating in the center of an abrashed taupe field. Corresponding fretwork patterns form the corner spandrels, which each contain three small rosettes. Graceful peony flower motifs decorate the field on each side of the medallion, their delicate scrolling reminiscent of the fretwork patterns in the rest of the field design, which engenders a strong sense of harmony and balance. The main border, which features repeated motifs of diamonds containing stylized ruyi clouds with rosette centers, echoes the balance of geometric forms and floral touches used throughout the piece. A winding S-shape inner border adds further intrigue and balance to the overall design. Located in the Inner Mongolia region of northern China, the city of Baotou was a major weaving center known for producing high-quality wool, and for its expert dyers and weavers’ unparalleled mastery of the use of indigo dye. This antique Chinese Baotou rug beautifully showcases the rich palette of blues and timeless style that is so beloved amongst Chinese rugs. Offset against the neutral backdrop, the lustrous blues and soft accents give the piece a dignified and tranquil sensibility. The pile is plush and wonderfully soft underfoot. With its elegance and versatility, this antique Chinese Baotou rug would be a tasteful addition to any interior. This piece has been rendered in variegated shades of taupe, beige, tan, fawn, ecru, sand, cream, vanilla, navy blue, cobalt, ink blue, royal blue, sapphire, cerulean, true blue, cornflower blue, sky blue, and muted apricot and pistachio accents. It would be perfect for a small space, kitchen, reading nook, master bathroom, grand foyer, designer entry, study, studio, den, walk-in closet, stair landing, alcove, mudroom, entryway, bedroom, private library, private chambers, living room, front room, wine cellar, conservatory, drawing room, trophy room, game room, music room, listening room, or hotel lobby. It would also make a lovely accent next to a buffet in a dining room or behind the sofa table in the living room. Iconic in its styling, this antique Chinese Baotou rug would be well-suited for a wide range of interior styles, including Traditional, Transitional, Eclectic, Modern, Neoclassical, Georgian, Regency, Empire, Victorian, Arts & Crafts, Craftsman, Aesthetic Movement, Edwardian, Jazz Age, Art Deco, Hollywood Regency, Mid-Century Modern, English Country, French Provincial, Bohemian, Boho Chic, Chinoiserie, Asian Antique, Asian Modern, Japanese, Ming, Qing and Republic Period.
