Nu zijn er natuurlijk miljarden in de bomen in de wereld, de meeste groeien in volledige anonimiteit. Dat geldt niet voor de volgende tien bomen, die hebben allen om uiteenlopende redenen bekendheid gekregen. Mehtusalem : de oudste boom ter wereld De oudste boom ter wereld is te vinden in de White Mountains in Californië, de exacte locatie wordt geheim gehouden om de boom tegen vandalisme te beschermen. De boom is 4.845 jaar oud (2013). De Methuselem is van het type Pinus longaeve. update: in hetzelfde bos is een nog oudere boom aangetroffen in 2013, deze boom is 5.063 jaar oud, en draag de naam “Dennis”. General Sherman: de grootste boom ter wereld General Sherman is een reuzensequoia en is te vinden in, hoe kan het ook anders, Sequoia National Park (Californië). De boom is 83.8 meter hoog en heeft een diameter van 7.7 meter. Gemeten naar volume, 1487 kubieke meter, is dit de grootste boom ter wereld. De hoogste boom is het overigens niet, dat is met een hoogte van 115.61 meter een kustmammoetboom (ook een type sequoia) met de naam Hyperion, deze groeit in het Redwood National Park. De locatie van deze boom wordt echter geheim gehouden, dat in tegenstelling tot General Sherman, deze boom is een van de populairste attractie van Amerika, iedereen kent wel de foto’s met groepen mensen rondom de boom. De wurgende vijgen: Ta Prohm, Angkor Wat Het tempelcomplex Angkor Wat in de jungles van Cambodja heeft zijn bekendheid mede te danken aan de bomen die het gebouw volledig hebben overwoekerd. De beroemdste boom van allemaal is de boom die Ta Prohm heeft opgeslokt. Deze boom was onder andere te zien in de Tomb Raider film. Anne Frankboom In 2010 is de Anne Frankboom helaas omgewaaid. De witte paardenkastanje heeft wereldwijd beroemdheid gekregen doordat deze uitgebreid beschreven is in Het Achterhuis, het dagboek van Anne Frank. Chandelier Tree: Boom over de weg Nog een sequoia boom, de Chandelier Tree, of wel de bekendste “Drive-Thru” boom. Het gat gemaakt om auto’s door te laten rijden is 1.8 meter breed en 2.06 meter hoog. Major Oak: de boom van Robin Hood De Major Oak, in Nederland ook bekend als de Grote Eik van Sherwood, is een ongeveer 1.000 jaar oude eik in Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire (Engeland). Naast dat het een fantastische oude en grote boom is om te zien zou dit het hoofdkwartier geweest zijn van Robin Hood en zijn mannen! Lone Cypress: meest gefotografeerde boom De Lone Cypress is gelegen aan de beroemde “17-Mile Drive” in Californië, de boom wordt ook wel de meest gefotografeerde boom van Amerika genoemd. De boom is waarschijnlijk 250 jaar oud, en heeft al meerdere branden overleefd. De laatste 65 jaar wordt de boom door kabels op z’n plaats gehouden. Cedars of God: 70 keer in de bijbel Cedars of God (Horsh Arz el-Rab) is nu slechts een klein bos met 400 bomen. Wat er zo bijzonder aan is? Ze zijn gelegen in de Ouadi Qadisha (heilige vallei in Libanon) een van de belangrijkste eerste christelijke nederzettingen. Vroeger was het bos gigantisch, vol met Libanonceder, het nationale symbool van Libanon. Het hout uit deze bossen is onder andere gebruikt door Assyriërs, Babyloniërs en de Perzen. In 1998 heeft UNESCO de laatste bomen op de Werelderfgoed lijst geplaats. Avenue of the Baobabs De Baobab is een beroemde boom uit Madagaskar, het bekendst is de “Avenue of the Baobabs” in de Menabe regio. Het is een van de populairste toeristenattracties in Madagaskar. Ze stonden overigens niet altijd zo geïsoleerd, ze maakten deel uit van een dichtbegroeid regenwoud, ze zijn echter de ‘last trees standing’. Bodhiboom: hier bereikte Boeddha verlichting In het boeddhisme is de bodhiboom een heilige boom, omdat Gautama Boeddha, de stichter van het boeddhisme, onder een bodhiboom bodhi (verlichting) bereikte. De daadwerkelijke bodhiboom waar dit gebeurde is te vinden in het Indische plaatsje Bodhgaya bij de Mahabodhi tempel. Acacia van Ténéré: eenzaamste boom ter wereld De Acacia van Ténéré groeide midden in de Sahara. In een straal van 400 kilometer om de boom was er geen andere plant te ontdekken, vandaar de eenzaamste boom ter wereld. In 1973 heeft een dronken automobilist de boom vernield, momenteel staat er een metalen gedenksculptuur op de oude locatie. In de woestijn van Bahrein staat overigens nog wel een boom in zijn uppie.
