I'm trying to get those creative juices flowing early - not sure if I'm helping or deterring, but I certainly have fun! As I discovered in our art session this evening, she is not yet as enthusiastic about painting as her mommy, but we made it work. Most is hers, but I did my part to make sure the tape effect turned out as I had imagined. This project required: a 2-pack of 11x14 canvas tape (Andy used to do auto pinstriping so I chose a thickness from his stash) gesso crayola paints sponge brushes Note, my inspiration. First, I laid out the tape between the two canvases and applied gesso along the tape lines. This prevents color from going under the tape. Next, I cut the tape connecting the two canvases, then applied blue painters tape around the outside, both to provide a border for the paint and to hold the tape in place. Then, I let her loose with sponge and regular brushes... The final product looks a bit chaotic (as mentioned before, I did fill in the blank spots - I'd ask her what color should go where once she had lost interest in doing it herself) Once the tape is removed, the final masterpiece is revealed! I true work of art for the boring playroom walls! Another recent project - painting snowflake ornaments for the Grandmas... And an ornament for our tree as well!

Palettes of Famous Painters Some artists follow Whistler, who believed the management of the palette to be the basis of good painting; others stick to Isaac Newton’s theory of colour. Some artists mix every gradation of colour they will need for a painting before they start, others as they need them. “My freshly arranged palette, brilliant with contrasting colors, is enough to fire my enthusiasm,” noted Delacroix in his Journal in 1850. The French artist was meticulous in his arrangement of colours, and when unwell, would take his palette to bed and spend the entire day just mixing new shades.

"The Witches' Sabbath" is a painting by Spanish artist Francisco de Goya, created in the late 18th or early 19th century. The painting depicts a scene of witches gathering for a Sabbath, a ritual or celebration associated with witchcraft and the devil. In the painting, Goya has created a sinister and ominous atmosphere, with the figures of the witches depicted in dark, shadowy tones against a night sky. The composition is crowded and chaotic, with the witches arranged in a jumbled mass, as if caught in the midst of a frenzied celebration. The use of light and color is also striking, with the bright, ghostly light of the moon illuminating the scene and casting deep shadows. The painting is notable for its eerie and disturbing content, as it reflects the fear and superstition surrounding witchcraft and the devil in Goya's time. Through his depiction of the witches' Sabbath, Goya sought to convey a sense of horror and to challenge viewers' preconceptions about the supernatural. I was really struggling with how to teach Kindergarten about texture. This project just came out of nowhere and it is now one of my favorite projects! I precut a LOT of cupcakes out of posterboard for my Kindergarten classes. Seriously, my hand hurt for hours after cutting all these out. I gave each student a cupcake a paint pallet of four colors: red, blue, yellow, and white. I told students to start painting! I loved listening to them discover how colors create other colors all on their own! They even remembered it later when we talked about primary and secondary colors. Teacher win! The next class, I gave students a paper to draw patterns on. We talked about how patterns can create texture. After the patterns were all drawn, I demonstrated (and helped a lot of students) how to fan fold! During my prep period, I stapled the paper to the cupcake bottom. I explained to the students how the folded paper also created texture! Here is my example: The last step was to add sprinkles! I gave students a pile of foam stickers on their table. Some students used all of the stickers, some only used 10-15. ALL of the results were perfect!

Here are a few things we did this week: Went on a Pete the Cat hunt (of course!) Spent LOTS of time on "Give Me Five" Love, Love, Love these free posters from Peace, Love and Learning. Learned lunch routine, practiced walking in hallway, and of course got to know our new classmates! Read Chrysanthemum and celebrated our names with art projects: *Rainbow names from Mrs. Jump's Literacy and Math Fun with Names unit *They also painted a present that started blank and as they painted their names magically appeared! They found out that the first present their parents ever gave them was their name! We also worked hard on learning our classroom rules: Read Chica Chica Boom Boom and did a few activities from Mrs. Lee's Kindergarten Chica packet. And of course we also: *learned how to open/close glue bottles *discussed bathroom hygiene and etiquette (like close the door when you're in there and leave it open when you leave) *learned what "blurting" is and why our teacher doesn't like it *practiced raising our hand to get the teacher's attention (instead of chasing her around the room, yelling across the room or tapping on her until she goes slowly insane) *Practice WBT's attention getter: "Claaaasss" "Yeeessss" *found out what "arguing with the teacher" means and that it doesn't "Make Our Dear Teacher Happy" *met all our specials teachers (funny how they all looked relieved when I come to pick them up!) And I could go on. . . and on. . . and on. . . and. . . I loved it! It was a great first week!
