I have another free image to share with you today, this time it's a pair of owls cuddling up on a tree branch with the full moon in the background. I printed it onto some brown cardstock and then coloured the image with nice soft pencils. The dark background worked as the shadow and I simply added the highlights in graduated shades.

Aunt M Quilt Chronicles, Chapter III: Elephants! Hayley's You may recall that my cute little Aunt is on a quest to make quilts for her granddaughters. I've become her quilt-coach (enabler, lol!). First it was a couple of owl quilts, then bears, and now elephants! Elephants by Pacific Rim Quilt Co She found a design that she liked, and like any brand new quilter, was totally fearless about the making of it. "We can do that, can't we?" The pattern uses a two-fabric applique' technique, where the fabrics are layered, and the design is cut out, giving a kind of mosaic/stained glass effect. The granddaughters selected colors, and we made a couple of treks to the fabric store where Aunt Marjory is making new friends. Since the pattern only makes a 24" x 36" quilt and she wanted 60" x 72" lap quilts, we had to make some adjustments. I borrowed an overhead projector from the local 4-H office, pinned the fabrics to the wall, then projected the pattern over the fabric, adjusted to the size we needed, then traced it with chalk and handed it off to Uncle Jack, our designated "cutter-outer". Once I had the background stitched together with a border, I had to perform a little tricky reverse-applique' to get the same look as the original pattern so that it appeared that the design was growing out of the borders. Then the only task was to lay out the pieces and glue them in place, ready to "Appli-quilt" on the longarm. That 505 spray adhesive works perfectly. Jessica's Aunt Marjory wanted to keep her theme of "Owl always love you" for these quilts, so we added a mini owl in the tree (don't know if there are owls in sub-Saharan deserts of Africa, but it works!) and she had me quilt "Remember, owl always love you" in the quilt. You know, because elephants always remember. So two more down, three to go, for the granddaughters, that is. She's thinking about a dragon, unicorn or Pegasus next. You know how it is ~ once you catch the bug, you just can't quit! Update: more Aunt Marjory Quilt Chronicles!' In November, when I was back in Boston with my mom and sister for my sister's treatment at Tufts Medical Center, we took a day a went out to Concord. Having never been there, we took our time meandering though the town and then finally out to the Orchard House. This was the home of the Alcott family and was where Louisa May wrote her famous book, Little Women. Her father held classes on philosophy in a building in the back, and they were great friends with Emerson and Thoreau. Last week when I was at CHA, I got some complimentary Scrap Within Reach paper (thanks Heidi and Nancy!) and on the way home in absolutely horrendous traffic, I spent the time planning what I would do with the paper. I decided that the Urban Garden line would be perfect for my pictures of Orchard House. Then this week, my friend Susan Stringfellow made the template below and challenged us to complete a layout using the template and cutting the pieces out of patterned paper. I thought it would be a great addition to my Orchard House layout, so I gave it a shot. Here is the template: Here is the layout using the Urban Garden. I included a picture of me in front of the house, the sign, Mr. Alcott's philosophy classroom, and a picture of me with my sis in front of the door. Part of her treatment included a shot that made her quite photo sensitive and she had to stay completely covered, thus the hood and glasses in the pic. It was a terrific tour, we really enjoyed our tour guide, learned a lot about the Alcott's, and then when it was over, out of concern for my sister, the sweet tour guide gave us a ride back into town to the famous Colonial Inn. If you're ever in Concord, Massachusetts I highly recommend a few hours at the Orchard House! Supplies: Scrap Within Reach: Urban Garden Black brads Susan Stringfellow template

I have always loved owls - but lately so does everyone else! They are everywhere! This is a fun project I came up with for several of my art classes... I found a multi pack of bright socks at Target - you could use earth tones but I chose to go with totally unrealistic colors. You cut the heel off of the socks... Here are the shapes to cut out of felt that will coordinate with the socks... Template at the bottom of the post. Cut the feet on a fold and you can add buttons for the center of the eye. I glued the wings at the top. Now put some beans or rice in the bottom of the sock to create a base for the owl to stand up on his own. Then add fiberfill until the owl is rounded and plump - leaving about an inch at the top unstuffed. Using fabric tack or hot glue fasten the eyes and beak onto the sock about an inch below the top. Now fold the 2 top corner edges under just a little and put a drop of glue to hold them together for the ear tufts. Next pull the back top edge of the sock over the front and glue it over the very top of the eyes. To finish glue the ear tufts further across the top and you may want to put some fray stop on the exposed sock edges. Glue the wings and the feet onto the owl and you're done! What a Hoot! My former Grade 3's made these adorable owls out of torn paper. I found the lesson on one of my all-time favourite art blogs: the fantastic Deep Space Sparkle page. We did ours on black paper; the kids sketched a very basic owl body with a white pencil crayons, then filled in the body with torn brown paper (two different tones of brown). Then they glued on a branch, beaks, eyes and feet. So cute!
