Epimediums' attractive foliage is dotted with delicate flowers in spring. Why grow Epimedium? Epimediums are hardy, long-lived additions to woodlands, rock gardens, and containers. Plants expand slowly via rhizomes at a polite, measured pace. How to care for Epimedium Epimediums are durable plants. They will thrive in rich, loamy soil with regular water, but are drought tolerant and amazingly adaptable to virtually any soil from rocky to clay. Clay will slow them down at first, but eventually the tough rhizomes will win out. Epimediums are often recommended for dry shade, where few other plants succeed, but not all dry shade is created equally. Gardeners in dry summer climates will need to supply some water during the growing season. These plants need very little care beyond an annual freshening up trim if the foliage looks like it needs it, and a good layer of mulch. Epimediums are generally deer-resistant, but rabbits love to nip at the tender new growth.

DOG CONFESSIONS GARDEN UPDATE What an incredibly lovely day weather-wise. Like the Indian Summer we were missing, today's light breezes and gentle sun made it a delight. I hear rain and snow are coming soon, so we will enjoy it while we can. BIZARRE CHRISTMAS CARDS PERSIMMONS Most of the world calls them kaki; they are caqui in Spanish, or Sharon fruit in Israel. In the United States, we call them persimmons after the Algonquin Indian name for Diospyros virginiana, the native american persimmon or Possum Persimmon. The genus name, Diospyros, means “food for the gods”. Once you get to know persimmons, you will agree they are indeed food for the gods. Growing up we loved our mother's persimmpon pudding, a variety with the bright orange hachiya persimmons being the star. The result is a fragrant and tasty steamed-type pudding that bakes in the oven. See our Garden Goodies section below for her recipe. Persimmons need to be fully ripe before using. They have a lot of tannin and protein in them, so ripen them more quickly by placing them in a paper bag with some bananas, which will give off a gas while they are ripening and hurry the persimmons along. The persimmons should be soft, like a thin skin covering a jelly-like pulp inside, not mushy. We all cherish those memories of that wonderful dessert and as it was rare that she would make it, it was something to look forward to in the Fall. Bonus! If we could find a neighbor or friend that had a tree and didn't want the fruit, we would rejoice! Take a chance and try today's recipe for a taste of Fall your tummy will thank you for. GARDEN GIGGLE DILBERT'S RULES OF WORK 1. I can please only one person per day. Today is not your day. Tomorrow, isn't looking good either. 2. I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by. 3. Am I getting smart with you? How would you know? 4. I'd explain it to you, but your brain would explode. 5. Someday we'll look back on all this and plow into a parked car. 6. There are very few personal problems that cannot be solved through a suitable application of high explosives. 7. Tell me what you need, and I'll tell you how to get along without it. 8. Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue. 9. Needing someone is like needing a parachute. If he isn't there the first time you need him, chances are you won't be needing him again. 10. I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem. 11. Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, "Where the heck is the ceiling?!" 12. My Reality Check bounced. 13. On the keyboard of life, always keep one finger on the escape key. 14. I don't suffer from stress. I'm a carrier. 15. You're slower than a herd of turtles stampeding through peanut butter. 16. Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, 'cuz, like, you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup. 17. Everybody is somebody else's weirdo! Add sugar and eggs; beat well. Add buttermilk and vanilla. Sift flour, spices, salt together. Stir in persimmon mixture. Beat well and add cream. Put butter in 9" by 13" pan to melt in oven. Pour butter into pulp mixture, leaving just enough to grease the pan. Beat well. Pour into greased pan and bake in slow oven (300F) for 1 hour or until done. Our best-selling Original Charleston Bedswing is loved by customers seeking a cozy hanging bed swing retreat for their porch or living area - a place to relax and enjoy the comfort of your home. The Original Charleston Bedswing measures 83”L x 43”W x 24”H. To best complement your Original Charleston Bedswing, we recommend a cushion set that includes a bottom cushion, a back cushion, and an option of side cushions, bolsters, or throw pillows. You may add your cushion set as a separate item here. You also have the option of a ProManila rope or chain hanging package for up to a 12 foot ceiling height. Your chain or rope will be cut based on the ceiling measurement you provide (minus 2 feet of the ceiling height for chain / plus 4 feet of the ceiling height for rope); please measure twice. If your ceiling is over 12 feet, please contact us for assistance. The ProManila rope is a synthetic alternative to natural fiber manila rope; it performs better than a natural fiber in outdoor elements but is still a less durable hanging option than chain. The rope may stretch over time, making it necessary to adjust the height of your bedswing. And if used in a humid environment, the rope can be susceptible to fade, mildew and rot. Overall, depending on the climate, the rope may need to be replaced from time to time. Our bedswings are made to order. Estimated shipment dates include a longer lead time - typically eight to ten weeks. We make every effort to deliver your order as soon as possible, though, so please be prepared to receive your item(s) immediately following placing the order. If you cannot accept delivery before a certain date, please notify us in advance. Due to space constraints, we do not hold shipments once your item is ready. PLEASE NOTE -- your bedswing and cushions will arrive separately. The cushions are sent via freight carrier and will be delivered curbside. Please make arrangements to bring the cushions into your home and dispose of the packaging and pallet. The bedswing is sent via white glove carrier and placed in your chosen area of the home. However, please alert us in advance if you have significant stairs and/or need the bedswing placed on an upper level or difficult to navigate area as additional charges may apply.

In 2016, Anders Frederik Steen and Anne Bruun Blauert made that move, leaving their native Denmark to continue the winemaking started here by Anders in 2013. At that stage, he was better known as cofounder and sommelier of two Copenhagen institutions, Relæ and Manfreds, which garnered equal parts praise and criticism when they first opened for pushing a new kind of ultra-seasonal, organic cuisine paired only with natural wines.
