The doctors didn't give us much hope that he'd survive, and if he did, he probably wouldn’t talk, understand, or walk again. They were wrong; God had other plans! Following his injury, and over the course of 18 months, he was blessed to receive multiple therapies—speech, physical, and occupational. I learned a great deal from his therapists, particularly his speech therapists. I have used, and continue to use, many of their techniques at home. Bob has come a long way, even so, he still has trouble finding words and understanding them, but he continues to improve! As of December 2019, he wrote a short sentence for the first time! The lesson here is, don’t give up! The brain has plasticity and can heal from the most severe injuries. When possible I avoid using resources intended for children’s education. We needed word-family cards for adult use. Initially, I wrote the alphabet and word-family cards on small Post-it notes. However, those were messy and not easy to use, which is why I created the Word-Family Flip Cards. This makes the process easier, and respects Bob’s adult intellect. These cards are intended for use by professionals or caregivers. I'm so excited to share my classroom experience with all of you! I currently have 7 students, but will be getting another student soon (he had to prove residency first). Most of my students have autism as their primary disability and are pretty high functioning. On average my students are at about a first grade level just to give you an idea. So, welcome to my classroom! I just (finally) added the student "mailboxes" (the orange boxes - yes, the free ones from Wal-mart). These are ESSENTIAL because otherwise I have student folders and communication notebooks all over the back counter... and I know one of my students will really appreciate this, as he was always going to the back of the room and straightening up the mess back there! :) Students can also keep their binders and "thunderbucks" (our school money - reward system) in their mailboxes. I love it. Also, you might notice that my bulletin boards are kind of empty - that is not because I'm lazy! I wanted to leave space so we can put up things that we are working on and so that students can display their work. I am also collaborating with our school's speech path for social language and we discussed putting conversation starters and the like up on that bulletin board! I like feeling organized. Next, you will see all my lovely clipboards, one for each student, nicely tabbed (color coded, yes) for each one of their IEP goals. I feel so much better now knowing how I will collect data on their progress. And yes, there are only 6 clipboards...we have a MIA IEP from a student who transferred from CPS...(that was a lot of acronyms, haha, sorry!) Want to see what some of my IEP sheets look like? Check out IEP goal sheet examples HERE. Next, my sensory toys, or fidgets. These are SO popular! They are great for students who need to do something (positive) with their hands. It can be very relaxing and calming for many students. My calendar! I put the Zebra border up before I even found the Zebra numbers! I wasn't looking for Zebra numbers either, just typed "calendar numbers" into Google, and they popped right up! You can get Zebra numbers too thanks to Doodle Bugs Teaching! I have a student who faithfully updates the calendar for me each morning when he comes in...and if a number is ever crooked, he'll get up and fix that too. :) All students have IDs to buy lunch and what not, and after some students kept forgetting their IDs at home, I decided to keep them at school. So here they are with the hooks from the dollar store and a sign explaining what to do. I have found if I put signs up, students are so much more likely to remember what to do than if I just tell them verbally. Here's my classroom rules if you would be curious in that. I know they are nothing pretty. I quickly wrote them in about 5 minutes before the first day of school. They seem to cover all of the bases so far! And...my desk. See my easy button? :) It's so fun! It was given to me from my college supervisor after my student teaching experience. And over on the left, the wooden box thing (it has a nice little apple decoration on the front) is from my very first teaching aiding experience when I was a sophomore! Let's get a close up of my pen holder! It's my favorite. I have a wonderful mentor who made both the holder and the flower pens for me on my first day of school. LOVE!!! Here's the book corner I showed you when I first started it out. I added some pictures to the boxes (I know some of them still need pictures...I'm working on it!) and also moved around the cubes. I like it better this way. Next to the cubes are puzzles and games that students play during homeroom and resource. I think everyone should organize their books this way! It's awesome because students first choose their category and then their book. They don't have to do as much looking around to find what they want. Arthur and Disney are currently the most popular, with Dr. Seuss coming up at a close second! Great set of suggestions on how to teach special ed online. Support students with special needs during distance learning or at home learning.
It can be hard to teaching cooking skills in special education classroom, especially if you don't have a kitchen! I mentioned before how I love "tricking" my students into learning by working on concepts using file folders. They still seem to think they are games! Or at least they enjoy them. Some of my students will even choose to do file folder activities during their breaks. A lot of file folders that you can find online are for basic facts, such as colors, counting, and what-not, but my students need to work a lot more on life skills that will help them become successful as young adults! So I created this set of file folders based on all things cooking and around the kitchen. I also include a variety of difficulty levels in my file folders so that I can appropriately challenge each of my students. First, we have a simple file folder that works on sorting measuring cups vs. measuring spoons. Then, this file folder works on students reading the label and finding the correct measuring cup or spoon. Now onto liquid measuring cups. This one is more simple, matching liquid colors and amounts. And then it gets challenging, matching the amount to the 1/2 cup as shown on the cup. I only have one pictures for you here, but I have four different options for setting the temperature for both the stove top and the oven. There are two different levels for each one, one with exact temperatures (ex. med, low, 350 degrees, etc) and one with in-between temperatures as well (ex. medium-low, 475, etc). You "turn" the knob to match the temperature. Could also be an easier task for student to make sure all of the burners are "turned off" too! Here's a food sort for what goes in the fridge/freezer and what goes in the cabinet. Sorting cups and plates vs. pots and pans. And finally sorting drinks vs. snacks. Aren't those fun? Teaching the different between public and private is important for so many reasons for our students with special needs. When teaching these concepts, I first talk about the difference between public and private places. We come up with a list and sort those places accordingly using visuals of one person versus multiple people. I created this sort from a boardmaker template and uploaded here on Board Maker Online. After talking about places, we move on to talking about both public and private places AND behaviors. We talk about what behaviors are appropriate in each area. This book and additional resources are found for free from SET-BC here and are available in PDF or Boardmaker files. (update: direct link here - other link now takes you to search) I love cut and paste activities because not only do they reinforce the skills taught, but also incorporate fine motor skills...and it takes a little while to complete :) Here's the other Board Maker Online activity that includes both public and private places and behaviors. Plus, check out all of these other great activities for this topic on Board Maker Online. I think it's so important for students to realize that private behaviors aren't bad, but they just need to be done in private! Here's to hoping there is no more nose picking or inappropriate self stimulation in my PUBLIC classroom! :) If you are looking for something more detailed to use with your students, I found this resource here. How to set up a work task station in a special education classroom. Work boxes are great for teaching students with autism and other special needs how to work independently.
I am so excited to add these grocery store file folders to our collection. They work on a variety of skills with a fun real life application of shopping or working at a grocery store!
Period 2 on my schedule, see HERE, is also when we do Life Skills and Independent work. Students, in groups of 3, rotate back to the kitchen area with a Para. There we have 3 stations. The first station is in the Hallway, and is working on more pre-vocational work tasks, such as office skills and packaging tasks. Station 2 is doing laundry, folding laundry, sorting laundry, and hanging clothes up. Station 3 is washing and drying dishes and putting them away, loading and unloading the dishwasher, wiping down counters, putting groceries away, mopping and sweeping the floor. Here are some examples of Life skills work tasks at Station 1. These boxes are in a cabinet and are numbered. They will be changed out monthly. Students take the number, match it to the box, and then put the box away when done. In station 3, one of the activities we do is put groceries away, or find groceries in the cupboards according to a shopping list. I sent out an email to our school staff, and asked people to bring in their clean grocery packages/items, such as the ones below. My cupboards are labeled with what is in there (dairy, spices, canned goods, etc) so it's a matter of determining what category something is, and then locating it. This would be for my readers. My non-readers will match a picture to items in one cupboard. In station 2, we hang laundry up as one of our tasks. I don't have a closet, so I purchased a suspension cord and hung it in the doorway. There are an assortment of clothes to hang up, from shirts, to pants, to dresses, etc. Again, I asked the staff at my school to donate used clothes and they definitely came through for us. We fold the clothes, sort the clothes, do laundry, and put them away. In my Independent Work (IW) area, the students do work boxes. These are an assortment of tasks from sorting, put ins, puzzles, academic tasks, adapted books, to fine motor tasks, etc. Over the years I have had different systems for this, but this next year the bins will be color coded (within each color there is also a range) so I can see at a glance what a students is working on. The student will grab an icon from their schedule, will match it to the box (there is a velcro spot next to the number where they will put their icon), and then take the box to the table right next to the shelf. When they are done with the box, they will put the box away and get the next icon. The Para whose job it is to fix these, will know that the boxes with 2 icons are the ones that will need to be undone, thus saving us from having a finished box next to the tables. Here's a photo of my boxes last year that are both numbered and lettered. Unless I memorized all the boxes and their contents, I wouldn't know what was in them unless I looked. That's why I came up with the color coding system that I will use this next year. They are color coded according to category and then numbered, etc., from easy to more challenging. Probably pretty similarly to most of you, when I started in my classroom 6 years ago, I had no materials. I was thrown into a chaotic classroom in the middle of the year with no curriculum, school supplies, or idea of what I was supposed to do! Luckily, shortly after I started, I was moved into a classroom that had been used for an after school program. In the closet, I found a bunch of miscellaneous junk, that I used to put together some of my first work tasks. And, these are still in pretty good shape still today! In my closet, I found a ton of pattern blocks, but nothing to do with them. I went out to a teacher supply store (although, I'm sure there are plenty of online versions available now) and bought some pattern block design sheets. I laminated them and put velcro on them. Then I put velcro on the back of the pattern blocks and used them as independent work tasks! Pretty easy way/cheap way to make a quick work task. My first year, I was also given these plastic pencil pouch filled with random school supplies that had been donated to the school. I had no idea what to use them for, so turned them into a packaging task. I had students follow the visual directions (which I taped on the outside of the pencil pouch) to put one of each item into the pouch. These tasks were quick and easy to put together using left over "junk" left by someone else...just goes to show, one person's trash is another person's treasure!
