War, from the conflicts in the Middle East and Russia/Ukraine to Mexican narco-violence, from neocolonial land grabs in the Global South to racial, border, health, and climate crises all over the planet, defines the most extreme and contradictory expression of the global world. In this fascinating exploration on the history of the thinking of conflict, Edgar Illas departs from military and sociological analyses to propose a theoretical exploration of war as the ontological force that produces political orders. Magma is used as a geological metaphor to theorize the mixtures of politics and war that organize, and disorganize, global society. Divided into two parts, Illas' study begins by surveying some of the most important thinkers of war, moving from classical antiquity to the twentieth century. Each thinker provides a different inflection in the historical evolution of the being of war. The second part turns to a theorization of the twenty-first century to claim that conflictive relations between capital, state power, political movements, and social life in globalization culminate and at the same time reiterate the paradoxes of war as an ontological event. The Magma of War is an energizing contribution to the task of rethinking politics in relation to war and an invaluable resource to all those conscious of the unstable forms of contemporary social and political life.

If you missed part one of this series you can find it HERE. Initially I thought I would be able to do this project on my own in my free-time. Well, because I got the albums in November and they were still sitting in the same spot, untouched in May I decided to call in reinforcements. My mom, my sister, my sister-in-law, and my cousin came to my rescue. We planned a day when we could all get together and get this project done (or so we thought we could get it done. It turns out we'd need more than one day). When we all get together it's a house full of kiddos. Between us we have 10 kids. I knew that this day would take a lot of effort and planning on my part to make sure we could be as productive as possible. I got all the supplies ready and spread out across my kitchen table. I got snacks ready for everyone. Snacks for the kids and snacks for the moms. Although I made a terrible mistake here and there was clearly not enough chocolate for the moms. I won't make that mistake again, I promise! The first task was to get the photos out of the albums. Some of them came right off, some of them...didn't. This is where the dental floss and band-aids came into play. We used the dental floss to remove the photos from the sticky background by placing the dental floss under the corner of the photo and gently working the photo away from the backing. *tip: put band-aids on your fingers before you do start this process. Otherwise you'll cut your fingers from having the dental floss wrapped around your fingers, pulling against all the nasty adhesive and then you'll need band-aids so you don't get blood on the photos. You can thank me later. I did some research on how to remove the photos before I started this process and I chose the dental floss method. A couple of other recommendations were to use heat to soften the glue and then remove the photos. One article recommended putting the pages in the microwave. I was scared that I would scorch the photos or just my luck, they'd start on fire. Another article recommended using a hair dryer. Honestly, I just didn't want to risk heating the photos and having them get warped or scorched. The dental floss was a pain but it worked well. I only had one photo that tore and it was only a very small tear on the side of one of the photos. After we had all the photos out of an album we scanned each one onto a memory card. As I said in my previous post, I used this Photo, Slide, and Negative Scanner. It worked amazingly well! It was so easy, all you have to do is feed the photo through the scanner! Really, that's it. You feed the photo into the front of the scanner and it comes out the back. When the memory card is full you replace it with a new one. Easy peasy! My only complaint is that it wasn't big enough to scan anything bigger than a 4x6 photo. I knew that when I bought it, so I really can't complain. It wasn't a huge deal because I only had a handful of bigger photos and I was able to scan them using my flat bed scanner. Pretty soon we had a stack of photos ready to be put into the new pocket page protectors and albums. Make sure you stop by next week for Part 3 of Restoring Old Photo Albums into Pocket Page Scrapbooks where I'll have the final product ready to show you, as well as my grandparents reaction. Here's another look at what supplies I used to complete this project. This poster is based on the Rhode Island vampire story of Mercy Brown. It all began in 1883 in the small town of Exeter, R.I. when George Brown's wife Mary Brown succumbed to a mysterious illness. Six months later, his 20-year-old daughter Mary Olive, also died. On January 19, 1892, Mr. Brown's 19-year-old daughter Mercy fell ill and also died of the mystery illness. Without cause or warning, Mr. Brown's teenage son Edwin Brown quite suddenly became frail and sickly. The people of Exeter Woods began reporting nocturnal sightings of the ghost of Mercy Brown. In March, 1892, close friends and members of the Brown family entered cemetery No. 22, where they gathered in the belief that Edwin's life could be saved only by exhuming the bodies of the Mother and the two daughters to ascertain if the heart in any of the bodies still contained fresh blood. If that were the case, the dead body was indeed living on the living tissue and blood of poor young Edwin. It was only by killing the vampire could Edwin's life be saved. The bodies of Mrs. Brown and Mary Olive were exhumed, and upon finding them both reduced to bone and dust, they turned their attention to where Mercy Brown was interred. When they opened the coffin, the men suddenly stepped back in horror. Mercy had been dead for no more than 9 weeks and yet she appeared well preserved. Her hair and nails had grown, and more shockingly, she had turned partly over in her coffin. Because of scant medical knowledge of the time, not only were illnesses blamed on the presence of vampires, but in many cases people were accidentally buried alive. The men rushed in and pulled Mercy from her coffin and opened her chest to find that her heart and veins dripped with vast quantities of fresh and florid blood. They removed her heart and burned it to smoldering ash on a rock near her grave. The ashes of Mercy's heart was the needed "vaccination" for the ailing Edwin Brown, which he dissolved in the medicine his doctor had given him and drank it down. Mercy and her Mother and sister were reburied but sadly, Edwin died two months later on May 2, 1892. The publicity surrounding the shocking exhumation of Mercy Brown was the inspiration for Brom Stoker's character, Lucy Westrena in the book Dracula. "There lay Lucy, seemingly just as we had seen her the night before her funeral. She was if possible more radiantly beautiful than ever and I could not believe she was dead. The lips were red, nay redder than before, and on the cheeks there was a delicate blossom." This poster is 17 inches wide by 22 inches high, generous black ink lushly printed on old-fashioned type parchment stock. PLEASE NOTE: This poster image was hand drawn by Madame Talbot using nothing more than pen and ink on illustration board. After the poster was completed, it was taken to a real printer and printed on an offset printing press. Absolutely no computers were used in the making of this poster, all of it was drawn entirely by hand.
