Have you thought about having a class pet, but don’t want to add one more thing to take care of in your classroom? Well, I have the perfect solution---a take-home stuffed animal! Kids love it and there is no cage or tank to clean out! Having a traveling class pet was by far the most popular class pet I ever had. Kids couldn’t wait for their week to take home the pet and have it be part of their life for a few days. Of course, I had to include a journal for the kids to write in through the week. Tips for having a take-home class pet. 1. Choosing a stuffed animal is the easy part because kids love them all. But, keep the size of the pet in mind. Too large and it's difficult to transport home and then back to school. Too small and it feels too much like a toy instead of a real pet. 2. Pick a traveling bag for your pet. I like clear plastic bags so everyone can see the adorable pet inside. Make sure it's large enough to hold the pet and the journal. I found this bag on Amazon for under $10. (Search "clear plastic tote" for lots of choices.) 3. Decide on the requirements for the journal. The requirements should be based on the writing level of your students. Kindies can have a drawing journal where they draw a picture or two that shows what they did with the pet. Firsties can write a few sentences along with illustrations. For older students, they can write paragraphs and add illustrations. Make sure all requirements and suggestions are included in the journal, so kids know exactly what is expected. 4. What will you use as a journal? I like using a composition book. It's sturdy and will last the whole year. You can glue on a cover and then glue all instructions and suggestions to the inside cover. A letter home at the beginning of the year, explaining the Take-Home pet is a good idea. That way, parents know what to expect. I also let parents know the take-home schedule a few weeks in advance. That way, the schedule can be adjusted if a family needs to reschedule the pet's visit to their home. Above all, have fun. Just like a live pet, the stuffed animal pet is a great way to teach responsibility.

Okay folks, this makeover isn’t about pretty, it’s about function. You saw what our tiny master closet looked like: Help me, Rhonda. I really let it go because I knew I was EVENTUALLY going to get to it, so why bother? I had this rad plan when my husband was going to be out of town for 3 days to surprise him with a master bedroom makeover when he came home. I was going to be awesome and organize the closet, paint, makeover a dresser, make a headboard and create a beautiful retreat to welcome him home. Then, I got sick with a stomach bug the day he left. Then 3 of the 5 kids got it. Uggghhhh. Soooooo, I greeted him with a closet makeover and some Lysol instead. First, I took EVERYTHING out of the closet, removed that big long closet rod/shelf, and then sent 40% (thank you Katie Goldworthy in the comments for the 40%!) of the stuff to the Goodwill. Out went anything that hadn’t been worn the previous year. That eliminated a lot. The thing that bugged me most about this closet was the dead space on the sides that made it really hard to get to the clothes at the end of the rod. So, I tried to make the dead space work for me by placing two rods on each side and made the clothes face out to me. Supplies you'll need: * a drill * we used a wooden closet rod but with the price of wood these days you're probably going to want a metal adjustable one and some wall anchors if you won’t be drilling into a stud in the wall. I did the same thing on my side and that doubled our closet space right there! Our closet light needs to be replaced~it was smelling hot (yikes!) so I didn’t mess with it and the pics aren’t great, but you get the idea. Then, for the middle section I picked up two brackets with the rod holders and mounted another clothes rod and a shelf on top. You could use a scrap piece of wood sanded down as an option as well. I also got a cube organizerfor 39.99 plus a few bins to hold socks, paint clothes, swimsuits, etc. Then, I added a couple of pretty knobs and that was it. We were using part of my son’s closet across the hall for suits, skirts, ties, etc. but I was able to move everything into this closet and the 2 dressers we have in the room. Isn’t it amazing what throwing stuff out and making a closet functional can do for your mood?! I love our closet now :) Have you come up with any creative solutions for small closets? Aloha friends! How is your summer going? I am all over the place with creating, reading, cooking, cleaning etc... But I am loving every minute of it. Today I am linking up with Tara for one of my favorite linky parties during the summer to show you how I created my own seat sacks. I have always wanted to get seat sacks for my classroom, but they are pretty pricey and I don't like the colors that are available commercially. I borrowed a seat sack from a colleague to see how difficult it would be to make. This is what it looked like and I wanted them to fit my 12" chairs that I have in my classroom. Simple enough. Pocket in front and pocket in back to hang. (These are available on Amazon, just click the picture) So I headed out to the ONE fabric store we have on island hoping to find some Duck Cloth. Score!!! I found all of the colors I wanted and bought a yard of each. The pink, yellow and green were a poly/cotton blend and only cost $6 a yard. The blue and purple were duck cloth and cost $9 a yard. The cloth was 58" across so I was able to cut out 4 pieces from a yard - 14"x36". I sewed up the edges on opposite sides. Then I measured 6" for the pocket that connects to the chair. (That was what the seat sack I borrowed measured) I pinned it and then I pinned the book pocket up to meet it on the opposite side, but I did not overlap them. Then I sewed right up both sides. Turn it inside out and you are done! I had a workshop at school so I took one with me to see how it would fit on my chairs. They look awesome!! I was able to make 4 from one yard of material. That comes out to $2.25 a sack for the duck cloth! The others were only $1.50 each. I'm calling this a win :) I can't wait to see how they all look when I head back to the classroom. (Well I think I can wait, I'm not quite ready to go back yet!) What crafty things have you been up to? Head over and link up with Tara or just check out the other awesome craftiness.
