This creative writing activity addressing Ophelia's characterization in Hamlet, is an engaging way to have your high school ELA students demonstrate their understanding of the play and hone their skills at writing using dialogue and using figurative language. Questions require kids to provide cited text to illustrate their points. Following is a creative activity with the following instructions: At the end of Act 3, Hamlet kills Polonius. Imagine a conversation between Hamlet and Ophelia in which Hamlet reports Polonius’s death: How will Ophelia react? What else might Hamlet reveal? Describe the couple’s dynamic. 1. Create the scene by first describing the setting. Include sensory details that establish a mood. 2. Develop a dialogue between the couple. Remember to change paragraphs when you change speakers. Include parenthetical stage directions that indicate the tone of voice or movement on the stage. 3. Write a concluding paragraph which includes speculation of future events related to Hamlet and Ophelia’s relationship.
