Fences are some of my favorite things. They can be beautiful, they can be functional, and they can "set the stage" for what's inside. They can reinforce a community aesthetic. They are often used to keep chickens, children, pets, and strangers in or out. They protect gardens and provide privacy. Most fences are pretty ordinary, ranging from chain link to cedar pickets to concrete block, but every now and then you come come across a really fabulous example of someone's desire not to be fenced in! Sometimes the "unconventional" fence is actually an old-fashioned hand-crafted fence, such as this wattle fence found in a Mother Earth News article. Wattle fences are traditionally woven from fresh willow or hazel branches, but other fresh branches can also work. This article discusses how to recycle green waste into beautiful, functional fencing. Another handcrafted fence we don't see a lot of anymore is stacked stone. Typically, in areas where these fences were once common, stones were "harvested" from farmers' fields each spring, as freeze/ thaw cycles brought new stones to the surface. The stones were taken to the outside edges of the field and used to build mortarless stone walls. Held together by gravity, a dry-stacked wall can last for centuries with proper maintenance. Occasionally, you see a fence that just makes you smile... ...like this fence made from old skis in a Colorado mountain town. You have to admire the resourcefulness of the person who used old bed frames to build this fence. And this fence made from re-purposed pressed and corrugated tin is a work of art! This privacy fence was created using driftwood. You don't necessarily have to use re-purposed material to create a fence that won't fence you in! An article in This Old House explains how to restore salvaged wrought iron fencing to create, well, fencing! There are lots of ways to build a good fence. Maybe you will feel inspired by these ideas to think "outside the fence" when you are ready to plan your own project. You might think about incorporating unexpected, salvaged, or re-purposed materials to create a truly one-of-a-kind work of art! In ‘Ontario’, many people who couldn’t afford the larger Georgian built the Loyalist Ontario Cottage to replace their original cabin or stone cottage. A ridiculous law of the day charged far more for a 2-story house than a cottage, so many people disguised their house as a cottage. I frequently have great difficulty deciding whether a building is an Ontario Cottage or an Ontario House! What to look for (clues) A small, plain, symmetrical house whose central small gable breaks the roof line. A little, often half-moon shape, may appear within this gable. Building is 1 to 1 ½ storys with the long side facing the road. Verandahs or small uncovered porches may or may not be present. Main story windows larger than earlier models. The roof has a shallow incline. The entryway may possess glass squares above, and possibly beside the door, for interior light. Where to find it This style was popular in both the country and city. Many people later expanded the cottage and added decorative elements that are commonly found in Gothic Revival homes. The main picture is from Prescott. Brantford has so many Loyalist Cottages (albeit with a larger central gable) that they dubbed them the Brantford Cottages. (The two other pictures are from Brantford.) I'm not sure what Stratford thinks because they have many similar homes. (The Loyalist-Ontario House will appear as a later style.) The Loyalist Ontario Cottage and House sometimes fall under the ‘umbrella’ of ‘Neoclassic’ which was attached to homes that evolved from the Georgian.

The Loyalist Ontario House is basically an enlarged version of the cottage. The differences are noted below. Many of the Loyalist buildings later adopted parts of the Gothic Revival style for decoration making them more difficult to identify. What to look for (clues) A larger and steeper gable (than the cottage) breaks the front roof line. The building is taller with two honest floors. Usually full-sized windows appear on the on the second story. A full-sized window often appears within the front gable. The main gable roof tends to be steeper. Where to find it? This became a very popular style, along with the cottage, throughout Ontario. The picture shown at the top is a house in Stratford that was built in 1859 and bears a plaque as a designated property under the 1974 Ontario Heritage Act. On the plaque it states, "a fine example of the Ontario House Style". The other homes are a stone house from Elora, a 'board and batten' wooden home from Bobcaygeon and a large and old stone building from Kingston. This was one of the buildings that often falls under the Neoclassical umbrella. Note: Check The Loyalist-Ontario Cottage as well for information.
