Hi everyone! We are back to school here in California. I am done with my first week of Kindergarten. Only one more week to go until my students are somewhat independent. I don't know about you, but it seems like the first two weeks just get harder every year! Once the first two weeks are over I can get down to some real teaching. I have started using the DeeDee Wills and Deanna Jump Guided Math units. I LOVE them! I mean it. I LOVE them. If you have time, check out what they are on TpT. They are an excellent supplement to any Kindergarten math program. My students love them too. Math time is their favorite part of the day (except for dress-up.....)! Here are somethings we did this week, along with some pics of my classroom this year. I like to change it up every year. Keeps it fresh for me. Capital letter name page This our capital letter name page. Each child gets their own personal capital letter. I don't know about you, but I have many students coming to Kindergarten writing their names in all caps. It drives me crazy, so I try and emphasize that we have 1 capital letter in our name (most of the time anyway). This year I had students put small stickers inside their letter. I had a million left over from last year and I thought it would be a nice way to use them. You could also have them glue tissue paper in the letter, small objects like sequins or beads. I wasn't ready to break out the white glue, so we used stickers. Big Head Self-Portraits Aren't these adorable? These are self-portraits! Yep, this is how they see themselves. Amazing every time! Each child made one and practiced writing their name. I like to use a highlighter and have them trace it. In the beginning it is hard to trace on dotted lines. I also like to attach name writing practice to bigger activities. I think it makes it more meaningful. You can grab this cute template here so your students can make their own self-portraits. Below are some pictures of my classroom this year. I thought I would share. Rug area As seen from the back of the room. Objectives Board My math board. I hang the cards from the Wills and Jump Guided Math units so I have them handy. I always lose things right as I need them. This way I have everything at my fingertips. My reading board. The left has my Focus Board. This is for letter fluency. We read the letters (left to right, top to bottom) as quickly and correctly as we can. I have our alphafriend and how to write the letter of the week. The red rectangle will hold our weekly sight words. That is some of the classroom. I also have a writing wall (It has nothing on it yet) and an "Amazing Artists" wall (also, nothing on it yet). I will post pics of those soon.

Wow! We are already 10 days into our school year. Amazing! It has been a busy start for me; especially since I am up to 23 littles. I know that number doesn't seem large (especially when I compare it to years ago when I would have 30) but it is more than I am use to. You see, the state of Florida implemented a law a few years ago that said by 2011 all primary classrooms had to have no more than 18 students. So I have been spoiled for the past 5 years with low class sizes. Now, although the law still exists, our district, due to budget constraints, has implemented larger class sizes. Not sure what is going to happen with this, but I guess they know what they are doing. Anyway, it has made for a hectic start. However, things are beginning to calm down now, so I thought I would share another interactive chart that I made for this year. I am sure you have seen this poem circulating around Pinterest. I just took it and made it into an interactive chart. The monsters have velcro on the back of them so the students can add or remove them as they interact with it. The line at the top is where they use a dry erase marker to write the number of monsters. I modeled using this with my students for their entire first week of school during math time. Now they can read and use it independently at my interactive chart center. Through observation, I can see who can really identify a number set up to five already. And the best part, they are having fun doing it! Now if I can just get 23 littles to bring their voices down so it sounds more like 18 littles in the classroom. When that happens, then I will be ready to start implementing guided reading groups. Wish me luck! Happy Blogging! Ann

1-2-3 Come Do Some More Chrysanthemum Activities With Me Since my students absolutely LOVE the story "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes, I've made an assortment of Chrysanthemum-themed activities to practice a variety of standards. Today I'll be featuring 3 of my newest creations. First up, are some Chrysanthemum Number Puzzles. They are a quick, easy and super-fun way for your students to practice sequencing numbers from 1-10, counting backwards from 10-1, as well as skip counting by 2s, 3s, 5s & 10s, plus I’ve added a template for those “toughy teen” numbers as well. There are 7 different Chrysanthemum-themed patterns, each has an example of all of the above templates, with 97 puzzles in all. Some are vertical, while others are horizontal. Pick and choose your favorites to make a collection of choices for your students. Print, laminate & trim the full color options and use as an independent math center. Use the black & white ones, so that students can color & cut up their own puzzle. For an interesting “craftivity” have children glue their puzzle to a sheet of construction paper. Remind them to leave a little bit of a gap between each numbered strip, to create an especially cool mosaic effect. Completed projects make a cute back to school bulletin board. Next up is a set of "Fix the Sentence" cards. These 27, Chrysanthemum-themed sentence cards, are a quick, easy and fun way to review and sequence the story, while practicing capitalization and end punctuation. Read the cards together as a whole group to practice a lot of sight words. Choose a student to come up and using a dry erase marker, circle letters that should be capitalized and then add end punctuation. (period, question mark & exclamation point). You can do this on a whiteboard, with a pocket chart, or pass a card out to each child to correct. For more practice, as an individual activity, have students choose X number of mini cards and rewrite the sentences correctly on the worksheet provided. Afterwards, students can swap their paper with a partner to correct. I've included 2 sizes of mini "fix the sentence" cards for this, which make a nice Daily 5 word work activity too. There are 27 mini cards on one sheet of paper. Simply print, laminate and trim several copies for a class set As an independent center activity, have children arrange the cards in sequential order. To make this activity self-correcting, number the cards on the back. Finally, since my students absolutely LOVE glyphs (Didn't matter what grade I taught and that's lots!) I designed a Chrysanthemum-themed glyph, as a quick, easy and fun way to get to know your new students. while assessing listening and following directions. Since this is one of my report card standards, glyphs also provide a "hard copy" to use as proof that a child does or doesn't. Completed projects make a wonderful back to school bulletin board, as each one will be different! I’ve provided two, Chrysanthemum-themed glyph posters to use for the center of your display. Afterwards, have children pick a partner, and try to guess which glyph is theirs by asking them a few key questions, which will narrow down the field. The featured FREEBIE today is also based on one of my all-time favorite back to school books ("The Kissing Hand", by Audrey Penn). Chester, a little raccoon is apprehensive about going to school 'til his mom kisses his hand, so he can continue to feel her comforting presence, so I thought it would be fun to give my students a few Hershey Kisses in a Snack Baggie after I read the story.
