VERSES: Malachi 1:1-4:6 MEMORY VERSE: Malachi 3:8 "Will a man rob God?..." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Review all 66 books of the Bible, reciting out loud as a class. PRAYER: Thank God for His many blessings like the Bible, rain, food, clothing, a home, people who love us and take care of us. SPECIAL SONG: The Family In God's Plan (see March - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #4 on this blog. Click on orange button to hear tune.) VISUAL AID: Large Activity (see below) or write on chalkboard or whiteboard. LESSON TIPS: Malachi is the last book in the Old Testament. The name, Malachi means "My Messenger." Other than his name, we know nothing of Malachi, his family or his background. Comparing the many chapters written in Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel, Malachi was considered a minor prophet due to his writing only four chapters in his book. Malachi is the last Old Testament prophet until John, the baptizer. In fact, Malachi foretold the coming of John in his book. The book of Malachi is written in a "teaching conversation" style where God has a conversation with Israel. We have studied many lessons about the disobedience of God's people. By the time Malachi wrote his book, they were even more disobedient. One huge problem was the priests. The priests should have known God's instructions on how God wanted the people to obey and behave, but the priests were disrespectful and disobedient as well. Priests were to know the law and teach the people. The priests were the messengers of God's law. In Malachi's time, the priests were not doing their jobs. The priests were a stumbling block to the people. We have learned that sacrifices to God were not to have any blemishes, they were to be the best of the best, yet the priests were offering polluted or imperfect sacrifices to God and God was not pleased. They were honoring disobedient people instead of telling them of their wrongs. The people of Judah were robbing God by withholding their money. The men of Judah were divorcing their wives and marrying women from other nations. Malachi tells them that God has always hated divorce. Malachi explained that God has intended that a man should have one wife for life and they were to raise godly children. Malachi said that God would bring judgment on those that practiced sorcery and witchcraft, those who were unfaithful to their wives, those who told lies, those who were unkind to the widows and orphans, and those who did not honor Him. All of these things are still true today. God turns his back on those who practice evil deeds like those. But, God would spare the remnant, the people who still loved God and obeyed Him. He would take care of them as long as they obeyed Him. He will do the same for us today. After Malachi was written, there were no prophets of God until John, the baptizer. "Older Student" Tips: Sometimes the word "hated" only means "loved less." In Malachi 1:2, 3, it says that God "loved Jacob and hated Esau." Discuss how God loved Jacob. Esau gave up his birthright for a bowl of food. Did Esau treasure important gifts that were given by God? (See April - Lesson - Jacob and Esau on this blog). Edom refers to Esau and his descendants. "Putting away" means divorce. ACTIVITY: Malachi Materials needed: 12" x 18" sheet of light colored construction paper, markers. Hand out paper. Fold paper in thirds, lengthwise. Unfold paper. Fold two sections in half, trying not to fold the top section. Fold each half of those two bottom sections in thirds, so, in the end, there is one unfolded section and a total of twelve boxes on the bottom two sections(see picture. Trace on lines. In unfolded top section, write "MALACHI" and "At the end of the Old Testament, God's people still had trouble obeying God. Their sins were growing. A few of their problems were:" and "Malachi 1:1-4:6." Number all the boxes, but the last one. (1-11) BOX #1: Write "priests." BOX #2: Write "sacrifices." BOX #3: Write "robbing God $." BOX #4: Write "men divorcing wives." BOX #5: Write "sorcery and witchcraft." BOX #6: Write "unfaithfulness in marriages." BOX #7: Write "lies." BOX #8: Write "unkind to widows and orphans." BOX #9: Write "intermarriages to other nations." BOX #10: Write "honored disobedient people." BOX #11: Write "did not fear or honor God." In the last box, write "No more prophets until John."

I decided to add this Judges post separate from the Bible lesson because I just kept adding to it! There is so much you can do with Judges! So, I will start with the lapbook. I made this very basic so that you can add as little or as much info as you want. Here is the cover, and as you can see, I kept the file folder the same design and did not refold it like I normally do. And, that is because of how I made the front cover. That is one of the great things about lapbooks. You can change anything to make it fit your needs and it is ok! So, this is how I put the inside together. I really made the scripture for the inside, but once I cut everything out, the parts fit perfectly, so I glued the scripture to the back. If you decide to lay out your lapbook like this, I put everything where I wanted it, then glued the parts down around the outside. Then I knew how much room I had to fit the rest in. Again, I didn't create any tricky cutting or anything, so it is easy for the kids to do themselves. Click here to download and print the lapbook. I also made this 2 page worksheet, which is what I am going to use. I started with the lapbook, then decided to just make worksheets. I made a section for each judge, and the kids can write in whatever you decide. I will just have them write in how many years they were a judge. You can print it in color or in black & white. Click here to print in color. Click here to print in B/W. And, the last option for this post is a Judges bulletin board. I thought it would be easier to have the basic info of each judge up while I teach this quarter. I like to review what we have been studying, so I can go to the board and point and talk! I will add a star or arrow for each judge when I teach each lesson. These can also be used as visuals, which I am printing 2 sets for. I am not permitted to change the graphics, so I added longer hair for Samson on mine. That is an option to help the kids remember if you decide to. Print it here. Optional Posters: This is an updated set of Judges Posters with Sweet Graphics. Click here to download this set. The judges posters have been updated! This set has key points for each person. Click here to download. Why isn't Abimelech listed as a judge? After a lot of study on the judges, I did not add Abimelech as a judge. But decided to add this comment as to why, after I received several comments. My main reason is the Bible verse: Nevertheless, the Lord raised up judges who delivered them out of the hand of those who plundered them. Judges 2:16 God picked who He wanted as the judges, and the first couple of verses of chapter 9 tell us that Abimelech talked bullied his way into being a leader, and is made 'king' by the men of Shechem (9:6). In verse 22, we are told that Abimelech ruled for 3 years. Again, he was self appointed and considered himself a ruler. After a lot of time spent on this, I can't get past the fact that God didn't pick him to be a judge. Please read the article below for a fantastic bio about Abimelech written by Dave Rogers, the Minister at Fayetteville Church of Christ in Fayetteville, Georgia. Abimelech (Judges 9) is never described in scripture as being one of the judges of ancient Israel. One of Gideon’s many sons, he was born to the concubine (a kind of “second-class” wife) Gideon had married in Shechem (Judges 8:30-31), and he seems to have been Gideon’s only son by this particular woman. (Note that Gideon had fathered some SEVENTY other sons, by the many other women he had married, Judges 8:30.) Upon his father’s death, Abimelech solicited support from his mother’s family in a bid to become the ruler of Israel (Judges 9:1-3), presenting his lust for power as a stark choice between being ruled by himself (to whom they were related) or being dominated by his brothers, whom he essentially presented as “outsiders.” With the financial backing of his mother’s kinsmen, Abimelech hired a group of thugs to assist him and then brutally executed all of his half-brothers except Jotham, who managed to escape. Judges 9:22 says that Abimelech “reigned” (a word which means he exercised power, acting as a kind of “prince” or self-appointed “royal personage”) over Israel for three years, but it is important to note that the Bible never calls him a judge, nor does it ever imply that he acted with God’s authority. In fact, the very opposite seems to be clear, since the account of his actions in Judges 9 makes it plain that God’s intentions for Israel were contrary to Abimelech’s ambitions (cf. Judges 9:23-24 & 56-57). Thank you Dave Rogers for writing about Abimelech and permitting me to post it here.

Lesson 14 16. Josiah King # 16 of Judah 2 Kings 22:1-23:30 2 Chronicles 34-35 Josiah was 8 years old when he became the king of Judah. He was the son of Amon and he reigned 31 years in Jerusalem. He followed God’s laws. During the 8th year of his reign, be began to seek the true God. He was still young and in his 12th year, he began to eliminate the idols, wood carvings and altars in Jerusalem and the land of Judah. During the 18th year of King Josiah’s reign, he sent Shaphan the scribe to the temple. Shaphan was to tell Hilkiah the high priest to count the money that the doorkeepers had been collecting from the people. The workers doing repairs on the temple were to be paid. While Shaphan was in the temple, Hilkiah told him that he had found the Book of the Law in the temple. He gave it to Shaphan and after he read it, he went to King Josiah. Shaphan reported to King Josiah about the workers being paid. Then Shaphan showed him the book. Shaphan read it to the king and when King Josiah heard it, he tore his clothes. He called in the priests to ask God about the book because they were not following God’s words! God said that because Josiah had a loving heart and he humbled himself to Him, King Josiah would not see the calamity that would happen in Judah. King Josiah gathered all the elders of Judah and they went to the temple. All the people: the priests & prophets, all the people small and great went to the temple to hear the Book of the Law. King Josiah read it to everyone. King Josiah stood by a pillar and made a promise to God. He promised to follow God and keep His commandments and His laws with all his heart and soul and to perform the instructions that were written in the Book of the Law. All the people agreed to keep the promises. King Josiah told Hilkiah, the priests and the doorkeepers to remove all the idols that were in the temple. He burned them outside of Jerusalem. He tore down the idols, pillars, shrines and wooden images in the high places and all of Judah and executed the priests that worshipped them. He told the people to keep the Passover that was written in the Book. In the 18th year of his reign, King Josiah held a Passover before the Lord in Jerusalem. “Such a Passover had not been held since the time of the judges and not during the kings of Israel or Judah.” There was not another king like him who worshipped God with his whole heart and soul and power. He worshipped according to the Law of Moses. Pharaoh Necho of Egypt was fighting Carchemish by the Euphrates and King Josiah went out to see him. The pharaoh sent messengers and they told Josiah that he didn’t have anything against him. He was there for a different battle. Pharaoh said that God told him to hurry and Josiah needed to leave so he wouldn’t be killed during the battle. But, Josiah didn’t listen and he disguised himself so he could fight the pharaoh. The archers of pharaoh killed King Josiah at the Valley of Megiddo when Josiah confronted him. King Josiah told his servants to take him away because he was severely wounded. Josiah’s servants took him out of that chariot and put him in a different chariot and returned him to Jerusalem. They buried him in his own tomb. All of Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah because he was a good king and followed God’s laws. The people of Judah anointed his son Jehoahaz to be the next king. I have a new Minute To Win It game. It's a New Testament version. Just click on the picture to check it out. In Seminary this year we are studying the Old Testament. For our Christmas party I thought that it would be fun to have a review of the year so far with Minute to Win it games. Here is what I came up with. I gave each team 5 apples and had them do their best to stack them. The team who had the most apples stacked at one minute won. You could also have a person from each team eat an apple and the person who eats most of the apple wins. For this one you will need 2 jars and a bunch of plastic animals. I taped a picture of Noah's Ark to the outside. Each person puts the jar by their feet. While standing straight each person tries to drop an animal into the jar from their nose. The teams that has the most animals is the jar at one minute wins. Each team is given a stack of cups. The team who has the tallest tower at one minute wins. For this one you will need 2 empty tissue boxes, 2 belts and 16 ping pong balls. Put slits on the two sides of the tissue box to slip the belt through. Fill each tissue box with 8 ping pong balls. Each person playing ties the belt around his waist with the box in the back. They both have one minute to dance around until all of the ping pong balls (seeds) have been bounced out of the tissue box. For this you will need 2 straws, 40 marshmallows, and two plates. Each person will have one minutes to get 20 marshmallows (sheep) into the plate (the pen) with the straw. For this challenge you will need 10 3"x 14" pieces of poster board and about 40 cups. Give each player 5 pieces of poster board and a stack of cups. Each player builds a ladder with the poster board for rungs. The team with the tallest ladder wins. Each team gets a copy of Joseph's coat to color. They have one minute to color it on their head. Each player must use at least five colors. The team is allowed to give advice on how to color in the lines. The team that does the best job wins. This one I did not end up doing. Here's how it could be done. You will need 20 old Bibles. Each team will have one member help another team member stack 5 Bibles in each hand. Then they will have to walk across the room with all 10 Bibles without dropping them. The team that gets all 10 Bibles across the room first wins. This challenge is in reference to Deuteronomy 33:17. Give each team a bag of Honeycomb cereal. Each team will have one member lie down on the ground while another team member stacks the honeycomb cereal, one on top of the other, to look like a unicorn horn. The team that has the tallest horn wins (without cheating). For this challenge you will need to print out two pictures of the brick wall below onto cardstock. Fold the cardstock in half like a card. Place the cards at one end of the table. Both teams have a member blow the card across the table and then try to get the card to hang off the edge without falling off. If the card falls off then they have to start all over. Bounce a ping pong ball at least twice to knock over Goliath. The first person to do it in under a minute wins. Here's a printout for you to use. For the Champions I made these trophies out of Toblerone. Just print out the picture below. Cut it out and glue it to the top of a Toblerone. The students loved it. This is all the further we have studied this year. If we come up with more games I will be sure to post them on here. Good Luck! Check out my other New Testament Minute to Win it game. Here's another fun game to play with scriptures. I also have Grinch Minute to Win it Games And Alice in Wonderland Minute to Win it Games And Frozen themed Minute to Win it Ideas
