This is a very fine example of an old New England tombstone photographed and sent to me by my friend, Paul E. Sanderson. It is located in the Thirty Mile Island Plantation Cemetery, the oldest burying ground in Haddam, Connecticut. The website for the Haddam Connecticut Historical Society states that,”… the earliest remaining stone dates from 1711.” In Memory of Mrs. Silence Huntington Wife of Mr. Jonathan Huntington & only Daughter of Capt Joseph Selden who Departed this Life Sept 22 nd AD 1788 in 40th year of her Age who Died with a Comfortable Hope of a Happy Immortality I was thrilled when my college roommate, Anne, found Paul on Facebook. We are all members of the Boomer generation and spent our last college year in sociology classes and participating in peace marches together…..it was the late 60’s. Paul and I have been sharing what we have been doing for the last four decades and lo and behold, he also photographs old tombstones. I am jealous. Paul lives in what has to be one of the best places to view some classic examples….grave markers that are hundreds of years old and artwork worthy of rubbings....NEW ENGLAND. set of 10 art postcards of an old New England Meetinghouse and burial grounds, framed by pine branches, adapted from a larger woodcut image entitled "Resting Place", by the Vermont-based artist Margot Torrey. This is a beautiful composition based on the Meetinghouse in Jaffrey Center, New Hampshire. My mother created the original woodcut print of this iconic New England scene decades before she was laid to rest here herself. Printed on standard postcard-weight matte paper, these postcards are suitable for writing on or framing! My mother was a prolific artist, leaving behind more than 150 different woodcut images, and since her passing I have enjoyed making new prints from her woodblocks using the methods she taught me. Note: these postcards are among the last inventory from her store, The Putney Woodshed, which she ran for decades in the center of Putney, VT. Margot created and exhibited her artwork from this barn-studio-store from the mid-70's until her final "celebration sale" in 2017. Gravestone on a 6 year-old who died in 1827 in the grounds of Saint Paul's, Hockley, Birmingham. The last part reads: "O cruel death, why did you come so soon, and from this world take me in my youthful bloom, why not leave me a few more years in it to brave and not consign me to a watery grave"
The residence of Bonaventure began in 1762. It was a 600 acre estate located about 3 1/2 miles from the Savannah colony. The first Bonaventure Plantation burned in 1771. It was soon replaced with a brick structure. The second house burned somewhere between 1803 and 1817. The "story" about it says that when the fire started, the owner was having a dinner party. He was informed by house staff they needed to vacate. He then asked his guests to pick up the table/ or their wine glasses and proceed onto the lawn where they continued with their party while watching the fire. Somehow, I doubt this. The property was sold 1846 to establish a cemetery. Angel on the gate post. Bonaventure has long been known for the massive live oaks with the arched limbs, covered in moss. Many are over 250 years old, having been planted by the second owner. Little Gracie Watson "Little Gracie Watson was born in 1883, the only child of her parents. Her father was manager of the Pulaski House, one of Savannah's leading hotels, where the beautiful and charming little girl was a favorite with the guests. Two days before Easter, in April 1889, Gracie died of pneumonia at the age of six. In 1890, when the rising sculptor, John Walz, moved to Savannah, he carved from a photograph this life-sized, delicately detailed marble statue, which for almost a century has captured the interest of all passersby." From About.com Gracie, some say, can still be seen as a blue orb, moving about the upper floor of the bank that replaced her home. Because police kept getting calls that someone was in the building, the currant owners have installed a pink light so Gracie's blue orb can't be seen. The bank from our Ghost Walk. When the cemetery first opened, some Savannah citizens had their deceased relatives relocated from other burials spots to be interred here. As time went on, it became a game of keeping up with the Jones on which family had the biggest and most impressive statues. There was a statute passed that only graves purchased before 1943 can have more than one monument. You're right if you are a fan of Midnight in the garden of Good and Evil, that this is the cemetery featured in the both the book and the movie and where "that statue" used to live. The 50 inch tall " Bird Girl", who had been standing for nearly 50 years, drew such attention after the book and the movie it was moved to the Telfair Museum of Art. The Wilmington River flows by the back of the cemetery. Some say this is the river Johnny Mercer had in mind when he wrote "Moon River". He's here too, resting along with other family members. He also wrote "Old Black Magic", "Come Rain or Come Shine", "In the Cool, Cool, Cool, of the Evening" and my favorite, "Days of Wine and Roses" We were here about 90 minutes. There were few people milling about. A couple of others, like me, taking pictures. The trees are enormous and covered in moss. To me, it is so picturesque. It was also very quiet, very haunting, and very beautiful.

You’d never guess that Philly is home to a 400 acre abandoned cemetery, that’s not only Pennsylvania’s biggest graveyard, it’s also technically not owned… by anyone. Originally established in the 1800s,Mt. Moriah Cemetery was only 54 acres, but over the years grew to encompass over 380 acres, and hundreds of burial plots. The unforgettable Romanesque entrance and abandoned gatehouse, makes it one of the most recognizable graveyards ever… you know, if you’re into that kinda thing, of course. The last person to be buried on the grounds was the only remaining member of the Mount Moriah Cemetery Association, and with that, the massive graveyard fell into complete disarray. Today much of the cemetery is completely abandoned. The overgrown plants, toppled headstones, and crumbling mausoleums make it something right out of a Tim Burton movie. It’s easy to get lost inside the cemetery, so make sure when you visit you and your pals have a buddy system worked out. Other than that, bring your camera because there’s quite literally a photo-op around every corner. It’s one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in PA, and with fall in full swing, you couldn’t pick a more perfect time of year to take a stroll. -Roadtrippers Established in the early 1800's, this cemetery was the original resting place for Betsy Ross and her husband until they were relocated the the Ross House in 1975. In the mid and late 1800's many cemeteries in the city were relocated to Mt. Moriah Cemetery. The cemetery also is home to a National Cemetery, the Mount Moriah Naval Cemetery Soldier's Lot. Mount Moriah Cemetery is a historic cemetery in southwest Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, along Cobbs Creek. It was incorporated on March 27, 1855 and established by an act of the Pennsylvania Legislature. The cemetery, which originally occupied 54 acres (22 ha), was among a number of cemeteries established along the "rural ideal" popular at that time. An ornate Romanesque entrance and gatehouse were built of brownstone on Islington Lane, today known as Kingsessing Avenue. Mount Moriah Cemetery held a notable place among Philadelphia's grand rural cemeteries like Laurel Hill Cemetery and the Woodlands Cemetery. It was easily accessible by streetcar. Over time, Mount Moriah grew to 380 acres (150 ha), spanning Cobbs Creek into the Borough of Yeadon in adjacent Delaware County, making it the largest cemetery in Pennsylvania. For several years the cemetery has suffered from neglect and the ownership and management responsibilities of the cemetery have been in a state of confusion. Two military plots dating back to the Civil War are well cared for by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Horatio Jones, who was the last known member of the Mount Moriah Cemetery Association, died in 2004 and the cemetery closed its gates in 2011. An employee of the Association may have conducted business operations without proper authority from 2004-2011. Having no known owner, the cemetery may be in a unique legal situation in the United States. Several volunteer cleanup days have been organized by a private group, Friends of Mt. Moriah Cemetery, and progress has been made to returning the cemetery to normal condition, but, as of January 2013, the legal situation is unresolved. Expected annual maintenance costs are about $500,000.
The Old Burying Ground in Groton, MA is home to several beautiful Park workshop gravestones from the 1750s. Of these, the most impressive is the Jacob Lakin stone. Its unusual shape, intricate detail, and elevated position (on top of a tomb mound) make this stone an eye-catcher. Like many of these early Park stones, the Lakin stone has unusual text spacing. Most New England gravestones have one major text field and a few words woven into the tympanum (memento mori, fugit hora, etc.). Some of the early Park stones have multiple text segments for the epitaph, with verses above or on either side of the main epitaph. Some even have the border verse in reverse order. The Lakin stone has a verse before the main text, another below, and a third around the edge.
