We are so excited for this time of year and getting ready for the upcoming holidays. Even more exciting is seeing how thrilling everything is through our children's eyes. Next week we have their Thanksgiving class parties and programs, and have been getting fun little glimpses of what activities and songs they have been working hard on to share with us. Cute has been singing one Thanksgiving song none stop for at least two months. "Don't be a turkey, just say thanks!" over and over and over. We can't wait to see his little face on stage and actually hear the song in its entirety. It was only fitting with all the Thanksgiving excitement just around the corner that our little ones picked a fun themed book for this month's children's book club pick. NOVEMBER'S SELECTION: For November our little ones chose I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie by Alison Jackson. FROM THE BACK COVER: I know an old lady who swallowed a pie, a Thanksgiving pie, which was really too dry. And with that the feast begins! After the pie the old lady swallows a whole squash, all of the salad, and the entire turkey! As Mother and Father watch in shock, the two children are delighted to see the old lady growing fatter and fatter. And, in the end, the old lady makes a surprising and humorous contribution to the holiday festivities. ACTIVITY: We found a few fun activities on Pinterest, but fell in love with this set of of sequence activity cards from Mrs. Jones Creation Station. They are perfect for all ages, and such a great way for little ones to retell the story! Download the full activity and instructions HERE. Check out this Old Lady! A colleague allowed me to borrow her "Old Lady" story apron, and was it ever a big hit! The apron is made by Lakeshore Learning Materials. Unfortunately, I did not find this item on their current website...I believe it is an older item from that company. Here are the items that the children happily stuffed into the Lady's ever-willing mouth: This time, I tried a new version of the holiday flip book; I used the binding combs instead of the binder rings. Here are the "Flip Book" booklets for the song: There was an old lady who swallowed a pie, A Thanksgiving pie, that was really too dry... Here are the "Story Song" accordion-style fold-outs to follow along: Here are the pictures for the board for a student volunteer to point to as we sing the song: For extra fun, one of my students was happy to dress up as the "Old Lady": She collected cards from the students showing pie, cider, roll, turkey, etc. as we sang each verse.
I'm sure you have all heard of the book I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. But, have you heard of the book I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie? This post contains Amazon Affiliate links. Can you believe it is already March? Time is flying but that means another holiday is upon us... St. Patrick's Day!! That also means it is time to make our therapy sessions festive. One of my favorite books to use in therapy is There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover! I love all the "old lady" books and so do my students. What I love even more is the ability to work on therapy goals while reading a fun book. I created a packet of speech & language story extension activities to use with this book. Check it out! The first activity included in this packet is a vocabulary kit. This includes vocabulary cards- with both the words and pictures, and a giant "Old Lady Head." Have your students "feed" the lady as she swallows the items in the story. The next activity included is a student story sequencing activity. Have your kids cut out the pictures and sequence the story on their own. This is great for story retelling skills and articulation carryover. Next up is a cover the dots activity. Use chips, candy, or have your students color in the circles as they answer a story question or practice an articulation target. The 4th activity included in the packet lets your students have fun coloring while they work on vocabulary skills. As you are reading the story aloud, have your students color in the items as they appear in the story. This is a great activity to keep them engaged and being active listeners! I love this story scavenger hunt! Give your kiddos a copy of the story and let them search the pages for words that contain their target speech sound! When they are finished, send this sheet home with them for homework :) I loved creating mini books when I was in school, so of course I created one for this packet! Next up is a prepositions activity. Have your students describe where the clover is in the picture or read aloud the multiple choice option on the card. I can follow directions! There is another sheet included in this packet with directions for your kids to follow (color the bird red, color the pot orange, etc) or you can make up your own directions based on your students' needs. Last but not least, comparing and contrasting!! Have your students compare and contrast target words and characters from the story. This is a great way to work on common core standards in the therapy room! I had a lot of fun creating this activity with my students in mind. I hope that this packet can help many of your kiddos reach their goals as well. You can download a copy of this book companion in my Teacher Pay Teachers store here or try to win a copy below! This is a post from last fall, but at the time I couldn't find the link I had used for printing the puppet head. Today, I finally found it - so I wanted to repost with the complete information. I was sorting through the kids' books last night, in search of The Night Before Thanksgiving by Natasha Wing, when I came across Alison Jackson's I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie, instead. I was happy to find it, because there was an activity I'd been meaning to do with the little ones, involving this book, and with Thanksgiving closing in fast, it was nearly too late. A few weeks ago, Michelle, over at A Mommy's Adventures, used the I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat book, for a story and art project, and I knew right away, we'd have to do something similar with this book. So, this morning, I printed out a picture of The Old Lady from Marcia's Lesson Links, for the children to cut out and color. I decided to use a different face for the Old Lady, one that I thought looked a little more like the illustrations in the book. So, I printed the Old Lady Puppet from a Utah Eduction Network, probability page (It's the one listed under "The Hungry Old Lady Activity" heading). I also printed out pictures of the Thanksgiving food the Old Lady ate from Make Learning Fun. After the little ones colored The Old Lady we glued her to a lunch size paper bag, with a slit in the mouth for the food to go in. We taped a plastic Ziploc bag inside the paper bag, so it could catch the food placed into the puppet. Finally, one of the older girls read the story, while the little ones placed the food into the puppet's mouth. Just in case you would like to do this activity, but can't get your hands on the book, there is a copy of the complete poem "I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie", here. It's great to be a homeschooler.
