Old Houses
I've been thinking that the back of our house looks a little like a barn. I thought that might happen and even discussed this problem with the architect. We considered adding a little roof between the first and second floors but didn't. Now that it's Spring and Hot as Hades, a pergola is starting to seem like a good idea. In our old house we had a pergola that covered the pool equipment. A New Dawn Rose grew up over it. It was gorgeous when it bloomed but it was a bear to prune. I think a pergola could provide some shade --and maybe a little romance--in addition to adding detail on the house to break up the flat expanse. Here are a few examples I especially like: This one is Martha Stewart's-(of course). The detail on the rafter ends is outstanding (of course). The vine is perfect and the pot of moss or whatever is just the right thing (of course.) This pergola is in Turkey. Now this is inspiration! Can't you just feel the cool breeze and taste something sweet and exotic. How about this one from OutdoorRooms? I could string those ridiculously expensive lights from Restoration Hardware and sit out on cool evenings. The pergola above is featured in an ad in Garden Design Magazine May/June 2011. Or maybe it could be really classy and I could lounge under it with a mint julip. This is probably more realistic. The butterfly bushes are a little too much for me, it's not balanced. All the plants are at the bottom--I won't be too critical--maybe it's new. This could work, too. It wouldn't provide any shade, but is would break up the flatness of the back of the house. I like the triangular supports that attach to the wall. I'd have to add a vine. Maybe not wisteria--it grows crazy fast. I think this one might be IT. The details are too good! Let me know what you think. Would a bigger pergola that gives some shade be better, or a smaller one that doesn't block the light. There are pros and cons. Later, Patti

The engawa in my opinion is a special place in a traditional Japanese house that you can sit with a cup of tea, take in the view and just be.... Source: TANAKA Juuyoh (田中十洋) Japanese traditional style SAMURAI house / 稲葉家下屋敷(いなばけ しもやしき) Once we finished the toilet area that leads off the engawa, I knew it was the next project I wanted to tackle. So ready with the orbital sander I got to work and removed the layers of old stain. What all that sanding revealed was light coloured floor boards. Even at this stage the area was feeling fresh, but there were holes that needed filling with some putty and impatiently I had to wait 24 hours until it was completely dry before I could paint. You know painting is my thing and I was just so keen to get some varnish on these boards! But my assistant was even more so..... After one coat of varnish Love this when the wood meets tatami! Ta da! Now after two coats of varnish Our little engawa has been given some love and now we can enjoy sitting together with a cup of green tea and just be.....

Boeing 747 converted to a modernist house, by David Hertz Architects, Malibu.
Tänään on ollut ruutupaperi päivä. Tuli piirreltyä keittiön hella ja kaksi takkaa. Teippasin kuvat tuonne seinille. Today I've been planning the kitchen range and two fireplaces on paper. I've taped the pics to the walls. Now that I look at the kitchen, I keep thinkin gof the one thing I dislike in this front opening house... all the windows are on the front wall. I think I'll cut a small window above the sink. Padasta roikkuva sälä on käärmeennahkoja.. keksin tuossa yksi päivä miten niitä saa tehtyä liimasta. The bits in the cauldron are snake skins... I figured out how to make them from glue. Joku kysyi miten nuo kaakelit on tehty. Kuviot on leimattu. Olin tehnyt aikaisemmin leiman jostain lehtihelmestä. Leiman tein näin: otin palan massaa, pyöritin paksun kepin, leimasin kuvion päähän, trimmasin ja paistoin. Ennen uuniin menoa tuo kuvio laatassa sai pastelliliiduista väriä. Lopuksi se on lakattu kiiltävällä lakalla. Someone asked me how I made the tiles. I flattened a piece of fimo, pressed the edges with my metal ruler and then went over them with a stylus. The leaf is a stamp I had made earlier. How? It's a piece of fimo I made into a small stick, prssed the item, in this case a small leaf bead, in the end, trimmed, baked it and it's ready to use. Before baking I added some color to the tiles with pastels and lastly it got some gloosy lacquer on top. Olen netistä hakenut inspiraatiota näistä Potter elokuvien lavastuksesta. Tässä Weasleyn perheen keittiötä. I've been searching for inspiration online and found some pictures of the Potter movie sets. This is the Weasley family kitchen. Tyhjää on... tarvitaan sohva, nojatuoli, pöytiä, hyllyjä... It is empty... I need sofas, tables, shelves... I want the same feel as in this Weasley family livingroom, filled with stuff but still inviting. Kaappikellosta tulee värikäs. The grandfather clock with get some fun colors. Makuuhuone... mietintää mietintää. Bedroom.. thinking thinking.... Nuo takat ajattelin ehkä koristella simpukoin kuten tämä Simpukkatalo tulevasta Puoliverinen prinssi elokuvasta. I thought I'd decorate the fireplaces with shells like this Shell House from the upcoming Half-Blood Prince movie. As for the bathroom, well it is too big, but... maybe some sort of a diving wall... And then, I've reached the conclusion that Esther has to be 1:10, she seems too big in every room. I just may have to shorten her...

In these photo’s I’ve tried to capture the beauty in abandoned chapels and churches. Places like these can be very old carrying lots of history with them. The difference in architecture is great to see and I believe that each place tells it own story. Some of these places are actually destroyed or in renovation now. Taking a peek in a place like this and being able to share it is great to do. Chapels and churches are among my favourite abandoned places to visit because of the secrecy of what’s going on ‘behind’ the altar. I get to check every room and run into the most amazing things. Clothing, ancient books and tools used in services are just a few examples.
A grand home gets a new lease on life, thanks to owners intent on protecting its architectural past.
