Photo Source: Eberhart's Explorers Kick off your Dr. Seuss festivities this year with a focus on the ever-popular and inspiring read, "Oh, the Places You'll Go!". Erin over at Eberhart's Explorers put together a few ideas your kiddos are sure to love! "Oh, the Places You'll Go" Brainstorm Before you attempt to start your brainstorm session, gather your kiddos together to read the classic book by Dr. Seuss. After you've finished reading, talk about all the places your students (and you, of couse!) would love to go. PS - we loved Erin's idea of asking her students to wear a T-shirt from a trip they took for inspiration! What a great way to get your students talking! As you come up with places you'd like to visit, have your students help you brainstorm how you would get to each place. In Erin's example below, her class discussed ways to travel by land, water, and air. Photo Source: Eberhart's Explorers Hot Air Balloon Craft Materials You'll Need: Red and Brown construction paper White paint Paint brushes Brown pipe cleaners Scissors Stapler Students photos Step 1: You will need a picture (head shot) of esch student before you begin. Make sure to do this several days in advance so you have time to get them developed! Step 2: Provide each student with a hot air balloon shape that you have pre-traced onto red construction paper, along with a small rectangle traced onto brown construction paper. Have your students cut out their shapes. Step 3: Next, have your students paint white lines across their red hot air balloon (in keeping with the Dr. Seuss theme of course!). Step 4: Once the paint is dry, assist the students with stapling their picture to the hot air balloon 'basket'. Finish it up by stapling brown pipe cleaners to connect the balloon to the basket on each side. Voila! Hang the super cute balloons around your classroom ceiling to decorate for your Dr. Seuss festivities (all you will need is yarn and a box of paper clips). So this post isn't necessarily a craft post......but here goes! I always loved Read Across America day as a teacher. It was always fun to break out Dr. Seuss and use him in the classroom. I always used Hooray for Diffendoofer Day prior to MSA testing and The Lorax around Earth Day, but RAA gave me a reason to use all of his others for fun activities and crafts. My last year as a classroom teacher....good ol' 2007.....I taught fourth grade. Our school in honor of Read Across America was having a Decorate your Door Contest. Each classroom had to decorate their door with their favorite story. Well I didn't have a door so I decorated the wall at the entrance to my room. The kids voted on their favorite story, they chose Oh the Places You Will Go! Then we decided to make mini hot air balloons for each child. I took their photos behind a chair and then had them developed....good old 35 mm film days. Each child cut out their photo and put it in their balloon basket and decorated their balloon to their liking. We added cotton balls for clouds and string and used cups and strings to make our balloons more realistic and 3-Dimensional. Then as a class we created a remake of the story using my students as the characters in the story. Our Door Won! The kids were so pleased! I have to say this is one of those teacher projects that I'm most proud of. So why am I posting this......well I'm addicted to Pinterest and I keep seeing all these great Dr. Seuss ideas and I have to share! =) It was fun reminiscing and hopefully you enjoyed reading about it.
