Here I am, finally sharing the much-mentioned but never-before-seen sign! I've been calling it a 'sign' for lack of a better term... I guess you could call it a directional sign? A few years ago my mom came up with the brilliant idea to make her own directional sign as an anniversary surprise for my dad... but each individual sign would point to one of the many places they have traveled together over the years. She did most of this by herself! Cut the boards, brought them to my house to keep it a secret from him... then we painted and lettered each one. My dad, of course, was thrilled with this gift. He built the cute topper and they "planted" it in a prominent location. I think this is just about the coolest thing ever. A conversation piece and reminder of all those fun memories. Ever since they finished it Mike and I have been wanting to make our own. Sadly, ours will have way fewer boards. But that's (almost) 6 years of marriage vs. 34 years of marriage. We have time to catch up! We've been working on our sign for a while now. It's finally almost done, and I can't wait to finish and share it! A few places I'd like to add to our list. She did a lot of fun, tropical-inspired colors since many of their travels have centered around tropical locations. So cool. All the mileage is calculated from their house in Boring. Yep, there is a town named Boring. On purpose. And, unfortunately, it's aptly named. What, you may ask, is that building in the background? No, not the house. Not a guest house. Not really a shed, although it has a small shed in the back. It's a pub! See, this is what happens when you live in a place called Boring. You have to build a pub. With 2 (sometimes homebrewed) beers on tap. And a custom wood bar. And electronic dart board. Check back tomorrow for a photo tour of this super cool little building!

It's been over a month since we've come home from our trip to the UK and Ireland. Time flies when life is happening fast! It is good to stop for a moment, remember, and be grateful. So as I think of going from Iona, to Edinburgh, and on to Dublin, I smile, thankful for the memories.

If you are a WWII history buff, then you know all about Operation Dynamo in 1940. It's an amazing story of bravery and courage. Over 300,000 British, French and Belgium soldiers were evacuated across the English Channel by an unlikely fleet of 800 boats. That amazing fleet included military ships as well as the 'little ships', lifeboats, fishing boats and pleasure crafts, vessels of all shapes and sizes. The setting for this miraculous rescue that changed the course of the war was Dunkirk, France. The 'Miracle of Dunkirk' is a story that is very close to Matthew's heart. His grandfather was in Dunkirk in 1940 and became separated from his command. He was one of the many soldiers that were captured, marched to Poland to spend the next five years as a prisoner of war. Operation Dynamo is an epic moment in the story of Dunkirk. But, we were invited to spend the weekend in Dunkirk to experience everything else that this city in Northern France has to offer Matthew and I both have a passion for visiting coastal cities. There is just something special about how that water winds its way through every aspect of life. Dunkirk is the third largest port in France and has a rich maritime history. So, it's only appropriate that we arrived by sea. A two-hour ferry ride from Dover and it was time to explore Dunkirk and the surrounding area. Dunkirk is located on the Northern Coast of France, just miles from the French- Belgium border in an area known as Flanders. It started as a fishing village in the middle ages and has been in the hands of the French, Spanish, English and Dutch at one time or another. The story of this port city is full of kings and pirates, battles and intrigue. Remember that movie with Leonardo DiCaprio, The Man in the Iron Mask? It's based on the true story of a political prisoner who was arrested in Dunkirk. The town hero is a man named Jean Bart who was an infamous corsair with quite a colorful reputation. On our first morning, we took a walk through Malo Les Bains, the seaside resort of Dunkirk that was established in the late 1800's. The architecture was lovely and a nice surprise. Wealthy families built the most beautiful homes as they discovered the many joys of living near the sea. Our stroll led us straight to the beach promenade that runs along the water. There are terraced restaurants and outdoor dining along the way. The weather was a bit chilly but can't you just imagine this place in the summer? I fell in love with these adorable beach huts. Dunkirk is known for it's watersports; sailing, sand yachting, canoeing, and kite surfing. Longe côte was founded in Dunkirk and looks like quite a work out. You walk through the surf with water up to your waist using a paddle to help propel you. Wide, clean, sandy, white beaches are just waiting for the sun lovers to show up. A visit to the city center was next on the agenda. It's not a European city without a gothic church at it's center that been rebuilt and restored numerous times. The Saint-Eloi Church was founded in the 7th Century, burned down a few years later, rebuilt in the 18th Century, revamped in the 19th Century. Across the street you'll find the church's belfry that was constructed in the 13th Century. It's detached from it's church because of a fire in 1558. The belfry has been restored and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's home to 50 bells which ring every quarter hour. We timed our climb up to the top perfectly so that we weren't inside the enclosed spiral staircase when they started to chime. For just a few euros, you get the most magnificent views of Dunkirk and the surrounding area. (An elevator takes you part of the way up.) Our wonderful guide for the weekend, Laurence, was eager to show us "the magic ABC of arts, beaches and cuisine." I've told you a little about the beaches today. My next two posts will cover the art and the cuisine. I'll also post more details about our DFDS Ferry experience. Three times this week I've responded "merci" to a waiter as they served my food. In London. After two trips in two months, my heart is still in France. I can't even tell you how much fun I had last weekend with the girls in Provence. Guess what we've been studying? Pretty much what it seems everyone else has been studying!  As I finished my Greek Mythology unit with my 4th grade enrichment friends, we closed by studying Greek word parts. The picture above shows the standards we met and a quick view of the big letters. Take a look at the finished display below, and I'll explain just what we did. Ignore my pocketbook and mess on the table! After finishing reading various myths and completing projects related to them, we went on to finish the unit with a study of Greek roots. I found a great resource for this on Teacher Pay Teachers. It is a unit of Greek roots that comes with illustrated examples. Below are just some of the cards that come with the unit. My friends got the biggest thrill when they connected the fact that in the myth The 12 Labors of Heracles the water serpent he killed was named Hydra which related to the root hydr/hydra and means water. It all sort of clicked like magic for them. There's a lot that comes with this resource including the making of a tiny box which holds a tiny version of all the cards. Each of my friends had their own box of cards and we wrote additional words we could brainstorm on the back of each card. Once we had studied most of the cards included in the unit, we went on to look at more common prefixes, roots, and suffixes that fourth graders will run into that may or may not be of Greek etymology. I created a packet which listed some of each, their meaning, a couple of examples, and a column for my friends to work with a partner to brainstorm more words they knew which fit. I had drawn some of them freehand (which is why some of them look a little wonky!) on white oak tag and spread them out on the floor. After we had reviewed and discussed our packets, the kids were given a Sharpie and a highlighter. They wrote their words on the corresponding poster, underlining the prefix/root/suffix. We then hung them in the room. I got the inspiration for the big letters from a Pinterest picture posted by the blogger of Smitten with First. She was doing a lesson on suffixes and made some big letters of the most common ones. When I saw her picture, I knew it would work perfectly with my friends. Some lessons just span the grade levels! This lesson turned out to be a lot of fun for us all. Having the display in my room has encouraged all the kids to constantly try and think of new words that could be added. I told them we would create a chart to add the words to. There is not way I am climbing on top of those shelves again! :-) While I did the is lesson with enrichment students, it is very much a great way to teach word parts to children of all grades and ability levels. ~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~8~ On a different note, Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! It is a day to remember a great man and the courage and grace he showed in the face of intolerance and discrimination. Last year, my friends and I had school on this day in order to make up days lost to Hurricane Sandy. It prompted me to write a post on some of the activities I was planning to do in remembrance. ^^Lichfield cathedral, England (the only medieval english cathedral with three spires in the country.^^ ^^In front of Lichfield cathedral.^^ England Day Seven: Today we went to LICHFIELD, England and saw where it all began (our last name is Litchfield). Legend has it that 1,000 Christians were martyred in front of this church. "Lich" means death and "field" meaning place... creepy. The cathedral itself was really pretty inside and it's a hidden gem in England. It's far from London so not many tourists get the chance to see it. We walked around markets in the town and all of the stores started with 'Lichfield'; it was so fun seeing our last name all over the place! Next Stop: York, England.

It's been roughly a month since we returned from our amazing "holiday" to Scotland...and each day, I've longed to return. It was no doubt the best trip I've ever experienced. I absolutely fell in love with the land, the history, the vibe, everything! I plan to do several posts about our time in Scotland (check out my what to wear/pack in Scotland post), but thought I'd start out by sharing my 5 top favorite places we visited. These were all wonderful for various reasons, so take note (or pin) if you're ever thinking of visiting the majestical land of Scotland. 1. Doune Castle - Parts of Outlander were filmed here (Castle Leoch), which is reason enough to love it...however, we thoroughly enjoyed this castle we "happened upon" because it was not touristy. It's set on gorgeous land, we moseyed on through it, then even walked down to a small clearing and stream for a bit. The combined feeling of history mixed with tranquility was something unique. I felt like we were in on a little secret...although, I think we just lucked out to be there when few others were. 2. Culloden Moor Battlefield - Just a ways outside of Inverness, this historical battleground is the place of the halting end to the Jacobite rebellion in 1746. We were there on a clear day, but it doesn't take much imagination to picture what a battle on this field would have been like in rainy conditions, boggy ground, and poor (physically and spiritually) Scottish soldiers. It's quite a tragic story, one that I would highly recommend learning more about. 3. Clava Cairn Standing Stones - Another place we "happened upon" that was just delightful! Erie, but delightful nonetheless. There are three circles of standing stones from the Bronze Age, each surrounding a burial place used thousands of years ago. How incredible to think of how people erected these stones with preciseness. Note: I would NOT care to be here at night...just a friendly little FYI. ;) 4. The Quiraing - This landslip on the Trotternish Ridge on the Isle of Skye was a fantastic and quintessentially "Scottish" hike...at least what I had in my mind. Foreboding and rough, hiking the Quiraing was a bit challenging. There's a point on the hike where most people we saw turned back, however, we ascertained we were going to complete the entire circle, and THAT we did. Thankfully, a fresh scone and cream were waiting for me in the car upon our return...pure heaven! 5. Steall Falls, Fort William - Another wonderful, yet completely different hike. We hiked down Glen Nevis (the valley right next to the highest peak in the UK), and as we came down into the opening of the glen, I swear I heard angels sing. It was absolutely glorious. This was the most fun we had hiking....mainly because of some hilarity caused by crossing streams and scrambling up rocks...but gosh, there's just nothing like standing in a peaceful glen (valley) between towering mountains and appreciating God's creations.
