The pictures for today's composition: This is not a usual theme that we see in school; as such, some pupils may find it quite challenging to write such a story. Nonetheless, I believe that it is beneficial to get the pupils to do this exercise for a couple of reasons: 1. It is good to get them to write some non-examination type stories, to expand their repertoire. 2. It can get boring to write the same type of stories over and over; so writing a story that is not typical of what they usually do spices up the exercise for them. The story is also pretty straightforward so I won't be doing a picture analysis. Instead, for the first video, I'll zoom straight into the first focus or theme for this week: How to describe hot weather. Hot Weather Many pupils like to begin the story by describing the weather. As the weather in Singapore is typically hot, it would be useful to know various ways of describing hot weather. For example, instead of saying 'It was a hot day.' -- so boring! -- you could say 'It was a sweltering day.' Watch the video to find out other interesting ways of describing hot weather. Eureka! In many stories, there would be a point where a character gets an idea and then the story proceeds. Again, it is so dull when you just say 'I had an idea.' We are starting our unit on Bears! Last week we read many versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Part of our work on the story included this story map. It is made for kindergarten students, but would be appropriate for first grade too. They drew pictures to show their ideas and then I labeled the drawing or wrote the dictation about what what happening in each part of the story. First, the kiddos worked on the setting and characters. I love this colorful busy picture that includes all sorts of details. She put the beds outside the house because she wanted to include some of the items from inside the house in the picture. This little boy drew just the house, but added the different sized bowls and had me label them. This was a great characters picture. So darn cute! Then on another day, students did pictures for the beginning, middle, and end of the story. First, we did an activity together where we ordered picture cards and talked about different parts of the story. It was great to hear the kids verbally retelling the story in their own words. That is one of the things that is great about doing an activity like this - a great way to really listen carefully to the oral language of students. I love the picture of Goldilocks in this one. Her hair is great! I was so excited when this little sweetie used the word "discovered" in her dictation to me. Woo hoo! Great language! I thought my sweet little students did a great job with this activity! And I was happy with how much they were enjoying the many versions of the 3 bears stories. And, now that they have done a complete story map with a very familiar story, I can start doing these with more challenging literature. 1) Welcome: 2) Songs: Start the Story Hour with the learning our names song. Go around the circle or table and introduce each child. Ask God to work the Holy Spirit in our hearts to give us the faith to move mountains. 4) Theme: Remind the children of the theme of the unit: God works among his covenant people to prepare the world for the Savior. Hebrews 12:1&2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us… look to Jesus.” Today we are going to hear a story about Abraham. Abraham and his wife Sarah had no children, but God promised to make their descendants as many as the stars in the sky. How would God do this? Abraham had to trust in God. 5) Bible Story: Today’s Story is "Abraham" . Read pages 33-38 (R 37-42) from the Read and Learn Bible (Scholastic). 6) Text: Today’s Text is: Genesis 15:5 "...Look towards the heaven, and number the starts, if you are able to number them... So shall your descendants be." 7) Crafts: Number the stars... Here is a simple craft that small children love to do. Give each child a sheet of black or dark blue constructions paper for the "sky." Provide lots of star stickers and allow the kids to put as many stars in the sky as they like. Then, challenge the children to count the stars! Or you can use the coloring page below, and do the same idea... lots and lots of stars. Most dollar stores sell packs of about 500 star stickers in gold, silver, red and blue. Worth every penny. If you have a star punch, you could punch out stars from colored paper, for some variety. 8) Closing Prayer... say the Lord's Prayer together with the children. 9) Going Home: Sing the closing together. Then, check to see if all the children have collected their crafts and coloring sheets before they go home. Say goodbye and tell them that you enjoyed learning about God together and were happy to have them today!
